I don't think it's bad in theory. There have been plenty of action films that take a more minimalist approach of conveying story and plot through visuals and cinematography alone. The problem here is, and this is something that a lot of Star Wars fanatics tend to forget, Star Wars isn't made for that type of storytelling. The original films work as simple space adventure story with each character possessing personal story arcs that are easy to follow and relate to. People come for a straight forward adventure with characters we grow to enjoy, not artsy farsty bullshit that will only appeal to all of one percent of the ultra-obsessive fanwanking nutjobs like Bob.

Really, what annoys me the most about people like him is how they refuse to accept that a person can outgrow a franchise. Star Wars was a family friendly space adventure film made to sell toys to children. Bob grew up in a time when they were blossoming into a pop culture milestone and can only see as that. When he makes a complaint or a suggestion regarding what he thinks they should be doing with the property, he's not thinking from the perspective of what would be just a fun movie to watch. He's thinking about how he can "maintain the heart and spirit of this important, groundbreaking franchise", completely ignoring the fact that these movies are made to entertain and she'll merchandise. In his mind, he thinks it's entirely reasonable to want a franchise to change its core audience to include someone who's long since outgrown it; because Bob now an adult(?) with adult tastes in movies, he wants Star Wars to fit into his new interests.

Man, that brings back some flashbacks. Specifically all the times I ended up on the "wrong side of history" in a debate with a guy like Bob.


I had the misfortune of having a coworker who was so like him in retrospect, it makes them pathological siblings, the ego, the stating of opinions as facts, the peppering of sciencey-sounding buzzwords in conversations, the belief that watching a 23 minute Discovery channel show on something was just as good as a college degree on the matter, (Seriously, I'd see him watching educational TV, and the next day, would be inserting the exact same words the quoted scientists used into his speech) ranting about how he'd been let down by society, the list was impressive. Siblings, parents, employers, educators, everyone had failed him by being too dumb to get him....we'd have Star Trek food replicators by now, if it weren't for society holding the geniuses (like him, for a humble example) back. Disagreement was seen as a personal attack, what other reason could there be to not fall in line with the superior futcha?! (tm) The quickness to anger was legendary too.

The thing that would get me the most, however, was the aforementioned unshakable belief that he couldn't be wrong, if he didn't know something, it wasn't important, and if you had a different answer, even if you could cite examples, you simply "didn't get it" or "weren't listening" to what he was saying.....

Said guy ended up fired for insubordination eventually, and last I heard was wanted by the cops for a bout of indecent exposure. So much for the genius, unless the proles like me just can't fathom the reason why dropping drawers in public will bring about that long-delayed techno utopia.
