That's one of a few production cels I own from the series. That's some real weeb shit and my sperg evidence. I think the DiMaggio autograph with the certificate next door is cooler. That was a gift, though.
People know about this series for one of two reasons. The first was Joe Bob Briggs' absolutely stellar review from 1992. My favorite excerpt from the review is his summary:
For "Project A-ko," those drive-in totals are:
Twenty-one dead bodies.
Two breasts.
Space explosion.
Giant robots turned into scrap metal with a pubescent girl's bare hands.
Giant robot dragster driven by a fat girl.
Five monsters the size of office buildings turned into fireballs.
Leather bikini martial arts.
Wrist missiles.
Sky spiders.
Kung Fu.
Robot Fu.
Dirty laundry Fu.
She-male samurai Fu.
Drive-In Academy Award nomination for Katuhiko Nishijima, the director, for making absolutely no sense.
My kind of cartoon.
Four stars.
Joe Bob says check it out.
The second reason, which applies to most people familiar with it, is that the Sci Fi Channel (before the SYFY change) showed anime every Saturday morning. Akira, 8Man After, Demon City Shinjuku, Dominion Tank Police, Lensman, Roujin Z, Robot Carnival - there was a solid list of heavy hitters in that roster.
It takes a real fucking poseur to point at some shit that was on basic cable and act like he's somehow "in the know." Half the nerds in my high school were aware of it. Girls, even. You're a real cinephile because your parents bought the cable package that went all the way to channel 8
