You could just buy some of the many arcade collections on Switch, Xbox, Playstation, or Steam if you wanted to play old Arcade games if you wanted to be full on legal and not buy some retarded proprietary system.

Of course then you miss out on great games like The Punisher that are never getting re-releases on account of refusing to just download what is essentially abandon-ware.

Honestly the overall collection of games looks pretty shitty. A lot of third tier Genesis and SNES ports and the actual arcade games are pretty lacking.

I just remember the same being tried with almost any pop culture hit from the 90s in the last few decades and the results are always the same. How long was it since they tried it last with The Terminator? 2 years?

It's not just pop culture, it's that the demographic you appealed to is now 20 years older and doesn't like the same things. The Star Wars sequels were fanservice for people who were obsessed with the movies 20 years ago as kids (and not so much for the Boomers and Xers who saw the originals in theaters). Since they're not kids any more, they're not gonna load up on Star Wars toys, pajamas, and bedsheets. So, sure, the movies got watched, but they failed to rekindle the phenomenon, because they had no appeal to kids.

The original Matrix trilogy appealed to young adults and teenagers, all of whom are middle-aged now. Plus, episodes 2 & 3 were dog crap, so who even cares about a 4th?

There are a few reasons I can come up with, some of which may be mutually exclusive.

1. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt. It cannot create anything new, it can only remake, adapt, or continue. Now, this isn't unique to Hollywood- big video game companies do this all the time. It's a matter of large studios (and Hollywood) being risk averse, and sticking to what they know makes money, leaving smaller, independent groups to take risks and breathe fresh air into the market.
2. It is an Orwellian rewriting of history. As we know, the modern Left both runs Hollywood and views the past as problematic. As such, they're remaking older franchises into more politically correct versions.
3. It's fanfiction made real. If you go to fanfiction websites (don't, you have better things to do with your time), one of the most basic types of fanfiction is "What if X was genderbent?" These female-centric franchises are fanfiction made canon.
4. Spite is a huge motivator. The He-Man reboot, if I recall, was made specifically to spite fans of the original.
5. The modern Left believes the maxim "The personal is political." This maxim means that there is no difference between a person's private likes and their political leanings; in turn, this means that anything not actively pushing a political message is to be destroyed.

tldr: Bob is fat and Lindsay Ellis will never have sex with him.

But no, why go for a bespoke solution that fits you best when you can buy something with a hundredth of the games for a tenth of the effort and ten times the bulk?

Because lugging around a bunch of cartridges a quarter of the way into the 21st century makes perfect sense! It's not like a hypothetical library of every release for the C64 and NES could possibly fit on a single device. Why, at 192K per file (highballing, yes) that would be almost an ENTIRE gigabyte to hold every single thing ever made for the titan of the 8-bit computers and the titan of the 8-bit consoles. It's not like I can fit a half terabyte MicroSD card on my fingertip or something, that'd be insane!

China didn't really push the numbers all that much. Opening weekend it brought in $41 million or 16% of the opening (250.2m or so). Most of of the money came from the United States. American movies back then didn't do very well in that territory like they do today. India wouldn't give a shit. Movies there are only made to push music sales. It doesn't matter how bad a movie does as long as a song sells.

Considering you can use xCloud on the Pi it's the better way to go. Pi Zero 2 can play PSX and most N64 games.
