Gen X doesn't have nearly the raw numbers to push nostalgia the way the Baby Boomers did during the 80's and 90's, when Fifties crap was all the rage. And even then, you probably wouldn't have seen anything more than a standalone diner with a fifties theme. I could see a retro 80's arcade getting popular in high-traffic areas, but no one's going to a retro mall when Amazon.com and modern forms of home entertainment are a thing. Hell, Dan Bell has made an entire channel devoted to exploring dying malls that are still stuck with 80's-90's era decor. There's no shortage of places to go where you can feel like you stepped out of a time machine.

Ironically, malls initially became popular due to "diversity" making shopping centers in urban downtown areas literal hellholes filled with crime and winos. While you couldn't control a public place, you sure as hell could toss criminals and bums out of a private place, and that's why malls had an advantage. The object of Bob's affection was created literally to exclude Black Bodies from retail spaces. Bob's a horrible racist for wanting them to come back.
