I think it's more Bob never really matured past his teenage years.
I'm around the same age as Bob (a bit younger) and during my teens, there was a fad (at least in the UK) for women being bi-sexual or "bi-curious". In practice this meant some women would kiss a female friend in order to impress a guy. Like all fads, it passed, but I don't think Bob ever got the memo.
When I mention things like growing up watching Saturday morning cartoons, or have a political opinion outside the SJW hipster stereotype, I'm called Gen X. Other times I'm called a millennial, usually when someone wants to disregard what I'm saying.
So my guess is he doesn't want his opinions dismissed as the raving nonsense of a millennial, in the same way he doesn't wear his trench coat and fedora because he doesn't want to be dismissed as a neckbeard.

It wasn't just a UK thing. In the states, during the 90's the women here suddenly decided that they were gay as if they were on the same retarded cycle. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you see it) 70 years of state atheism had a massive impact on the average Russian and most Russians don't really care about the Orthodox Church or see it as just being a part of their national identity, a bit like how some people in the UK view the Church of England, instead of genuinely following its precepts. Part of this is because the Orthodox Church collaborated with the Soviet Union and was to some extent subverted by the state, part of this is because after the fall of the USSR it aligned itself with the right in Russia by doing things like canonising Tsar Nicholas II as "St Nicholas the Passion-Bearer", and part of this is because Russia was very much an atheist nation by the 1990's and people saw no reason to show any interest in religion.

I never really disagree with Bob being Gen X, Mainly because when I was leaving high school, in the early 2010s I was taught a millennial was any person born during the late 20th century, but turned 18 years old after the new millennium, So born during the years 1982-1999. (I know that change the definition later in the 2010s and made zoomers start around 1997 I think). So I never had a problem with bobo seeing himself as gen X since I think he was born in 81. HOWEVER him wanting to be seen as Gen X by the general public. makes him more much cringe. Since everyone know millennials are seen a big babies, who love their capeshit, toys, and being snowflakes So he will fit right in. While around here Gen Xers don't do bugman stuff, and have houses and families with kids in high school or sometimes older. And smoke meat all day or ride their motor cycles, or drive convertibles, but a bit more in the know about things then boomers. So bob wanting to be seen as Gen X makes him look older and more pathetic not less.
