I’ve seen that in every community and it’s gotta be something like the person really likes the film and is scared the “Bad press” will scare people away or they need it to succeed because of their own personal investment.

From what I’ve seen, it’s more word of mouth than it is anything the critics are saying and that goes both ways. I’ve read stories about movies having a strong opening and then just falling off a cliff on the second day solely due to negative reactions posted on social media from early viewers and the world has many “Cult followings” for various forms of entertainment and it’s usually due to word of mouth.

Turning Red...doesn't really have any of that. The MC turns into a panda, she fights with her mom, then in the end she decides that instead of sealing it away like everyone else in her family, she would rather continue to turn into a panda whenever she gets distressed, because be proud of who you are or something. Not like that won't become an issue as she gets older, nope, gotta have that empowerment message even if it doesn't make sense!

It is even worse than that. The whole point about the turning into a Panda in the story is that it is related to Main girl's emotions, so the longer she stayed with the panda, the more uncontrollable it would be, that is why the movie establishes a bit of a ticking clock element to the story, so that the protagonist had to get rid of the Panda by a certain day, or it would get worse for her to turn back to normal.

Problem is, by half-way point of the movie, the main girl can turn back and forth the Panda thing at will without any big change in her emotions or any set back, instead of a burden that is supposed to be a metaphorical puberty, it just becomes a super-power.

At one point the Panda gets out of control and attacks one of her classmates, but that is just ignored by the end of the movie and once again the girl can turn back and forth as a red panda in anyway she wants, defeating the whole purpose of the conflict of turning into a giant red panda, so when the Protagonist makes the big decision of keeping her powers, it has no weight, because there is no consequences, it would be weird if she didn't keep her powers.

Yeah yeah "it is just a kid's movie", I'm not much into nitpicking these sort of mediocre shit either, who gives a fuck, but it does show a bit of carelessness in the script that the classic Pixar Movies wouldn't have.

My guess is that there was not much of a push back in the writing of this movie, people just went with it because of, well, let's just say pixar culture is a very different place from their Toy Story days.

Kinda... didn't wanna go there, but yeah, Domee Shi, the director, is a rising star in Pixar/Disney, has an Oscar for her animated short (which is also about overbearing asian parents) and seems like she got carte blanche to do whatever she wanted.

Problem with that is.... well, not so much diversity Hire darling but you don't wanna go against the winning team you know, you don't want to be the person who gets to be a problem in story meetings and if you push too much, someone who wants your place will ask "what, you have a problem with X", X being any of the hot button topics.

And that.... ain't a good place for stories to brew. I can't find anymore, but the original script treatment for Toy Story used to be around the net, and it was SHIIIIT, with Woody being a complete piece of shit. It took a whole complete makeover and John Lasseter to relinquish some of the control of the story for scrutiny and let professional writers to take over, hurts the ego but it does make for a better movie. And that's because the Pixar team was brutal when it came down to the story and a middling effort would never cut-it.

To be fair, Turning Red has two writing credits, Domee Shi and other asian woman who is a actual writer... however, she is a play writer who did some TV with no bigger title under her belt, so, you know...

And look, experience isn't everything, Toy story had a bunch of at the time no-names taking over the story, including a very youn Joss Wheadon (before the wheadon speak years) but they were under the pressure to deliver something great, while I have the impression the writers of Turning Red weren't under such heat, and thier work was better received because of circumstances outside of what was simply on the script.
