It's very strange that he recognises most films these days are more like reconstituted apple juice than a home made spaghetti and yet will still act like the engineer organising an efficient grill station has artistic talent equal to someone who has mastered the sense of taste to a point that they can turn any set of ingredients into a 5 star meal. Everyone has their place, but the soulless producer who is working for a paycheck is not someone you lavish creative praise upon. There is nothing wrong with liking pig slop, I love me some Big Macs and diner fried rice, but you don't act like it's the height of cuisine. It's also odd to put them on a pedestal when they're literally just there for a buck. Most of the current big-name producers at Marvel and Disney started as the guys behind films such as Blade. While comparatively a bomb compared to modern capeshit, it was incredibly successful for it's time and place, but most people working on it did not care beyond the paycheck nor did they have a fifty year plan to turn dead super heroes into a gigantic movement. Ray Croc turned McDonald's from minor successful small business into the only competitor with Disney for running the Global Government, but he started out as a failed door-to-door salesman and could never have anticipated the huge success it became. Every artist needs an agent, but it would seem the agent is now the artist in Bob's mind, probably because he identifies with stacking blocks rather than painting.Kinda, Robert goes back and forth with this shit. Other week he was talking about how most movie directors are technicians with very little passion for watching movies, which isn't all that wrong, a lot of filmmakers aren't movie buffs, and I think that might be for the better in most part, then he goes onto a anectdote from Herzog about how movie directos should be boot camp leaders of some shit, point is, Robert likes to downplay the "artist soul" from the majority of filmakers.
And I kinda agree in the sense that filmaking is a craft that takes know-how but at the same time I find it reductive, and knowing Robert, it is a low-key way to downplay those who are more sucesseful than him.
Then he turns a 180 and puts some of these guys of fucking pedestals, explaining how their genius work, and the funny thing is, his explanations are always some convoluted bullshit about how these people have some sort of magic power, and it always comes across as if Robert has some sort of kin with them, as in he understands how they think and how they play audiences and blah blah blah.
This shit is just a few step removed from the guy who claims that he can write/direct the next big Marvel movie if only given the opportunity, but the world is unfair.
