People don't have a problem with diverse characters as long as they're well written and make sense in their context, otherwise it makes as much sense as having a Japanese guy as a protagonist of a work set in the early days of the Roman Empire: By itself it's not impossible but extremely unlikely and serves no other purpose other than having that character serve as a standee, as you said. If they find a way to incorporate a diverse character into the story and write them well, even if some politics are inserted in the middle, it can work, but it won't if they merely serve as a display of the author's politics and/or as a standee, and that shit gets old fast!

Having minority characters isn't bad writing, having them serve little purpose other than being flat characters outside political sperging is awful writing and even downright patronizing. There are plenty of ways you can write an asian woman, for example, without defaulting to generational conflicts of them rebelling against their traditional parents. Fuck, it works best if you go for true equality and simply write them as you would write any other character, it's respectful and tasteful to do so!

Of course, Bob is probably one of those guys that like their characters as true stereotypes, except they must be the "good" stereotypes, preferably with some white guy as the villain that hates them unconditionally. And the funny thing is, in my experience, almost nobody is like that outside very vocal minorities, most people simply want to live their lifes and don't really care about this shit!

TOPLINE: Americans living in counties that voted Republican during presidential elections from 2000 to 2016 experienced higher death rates than those who lived in Democratic counties, according to a new British Medical Journal study, which researchers said added to a growing body of evidence that liberal policies may lead to better health outcomes.

KEY FACTS: Mortality rates dropped 22% in Democratic counties compared to 11% in Republican counties from 2001 to 2019, according to the study, which used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked to county-level presidential election data.

Between 2001 and 2019, the gap in death rates between Democratic and Republican counties also grew by more than 500%, driven largely by deaths from heart disease; cancer; chronic lung disease; unintentional injuries, including drug overdoses; and suicide.
