Fun fact: The reason why they're called "comics" is because newspaper strips came first and not capeshit which shares more DNA with old pulp novels.

Stan Lee disliked the term "comic book" because it made them all sound like comedies so he prefered "comicbook" as a singular word to seperate it. Look at Silver Surfer, a story about a man who wants to learn but was born on an "utopian" planet with no more problems to solve. He gets cursed with his dream and is forced to wander the cosmos where his innocence gets destroyed with no chance of ever seeing home again. Does that sound like a barrel of laughs to you?

OH GOOD! I was hoping the movie was bipolar! I really identify with a movie that has the mental issues of a troon! That's what today passes as complexity.
Sounds like a repeat of the last Thor movie.

"My father's dead, my friends, who I never mourned for, are dead, and my home is gone, leaving my people as refugees? Whatever! #YOLO"

Edit: some should reply to Bob with this meme.

To me, it is pretty obvious that Bob was not a fan of comic books at all when he was young, and got into comic books as a fad through the movies. He wasn't reading Frank Miller's Daredevil run when he was in his teens, or even Infinity War. So to MovieBob emphasizing the word comic in the term comic book seems like an own to him. But comic books weren't really a laugh riot when he was a kid or a teenager, so I don't believe he was reading them then.

"It was just one bad joke tweet," he says, when he reiterates his belief in eugenics repeatedly. Doesn't sound like a joke in that context, but I'm sure he'll just block anyone who brings up things like his "twenty-FUCKING-nineteen" rant.
Was just about to say this. It's always a little annoying when people fail to press Bob on this. They don't have to point to that "one deleted tweet from 2012," they can point to any of the thousands of pro-eugenics things he's said in the 10 years since that tweet. He argues that he deleted that tweet to imply he's changed, like he regrets saying that "one bad joke," but one glance at his Twitter proves that's bullshit. It wasn't one bad joke in isolation, it was part of a clear, unambiguous, decade-long pattern of behavior. It's frustrating that no one calls him out on it, they just seem to take his explanation at face value and take his side.

I think the reason it seems so fake and forced when Bob adds thesaurus words to his sentences is because in his baseline, he doesn't talk like that. When he's talking normally, he speaks like a regular person, if only a little more cunty and smart-mouthed. But when he's trying to sound smart, he throws in pretentious buzzwords like "elucidate". You can tell he's putting on an act and failing to sell it.

Which is hilarious considering that people without any sort of formal training can learn it by practicing their voices, even if just to imitate actual announcers and other potent voices, fuck, people without any formal qualifications can learn and apply technical knowledge even if just by buying equipment and using it as they go. Bob has a fucking degree and can't produce anything with the slightest hint of professionalism!
I never liked that fast paced Boston accent he does. It's over exaggerated and hard to understand.

The best of the replies about Bob's take on the movie for my money:

And I'll go one step further and say that Silence is superior to any MCU slop ten times over.

I strongly doubt humans have been writing stories specifically for children for thousands of years (never mind "hundreds of thousands of years"), perhaps with the sole exception of Aesop's fables. I think the "edifying literature" or Bildungsroman only came into being in the 18th Century, and in all likelihood none involved wizards.

To prove his point of provocative family movies he uses a screen grab from Rocky Horror Picture Show? A clip from the song Sweet Transvestite?
I don't know what ol' Bobbyboi is trying to imply. Looks like he got caught with a joke that fell flat. How about that.

I actually had a dream about MovieBob this morning. I was in my home with a friend of mine and MovieBob. He was cheerfully telling us about how his favorite movies are better than ours, how our taste in movies were shit, and that he wanted Germany to invade Poland. My friend and I were raging and he was laughing at us. It was the most infuriating dream I've ever had. Maybe I spend too much time in this thread?

Moviebob's right about the Internet making everyone stupider. Moviebob's own words accurately--hell, perfectly--demonstrate Bob's own statement.

Moviebob has quite likely driven zero miles and across America. Ergo, Moviebob knows nothing about Middle America outside of stereotypes demonstrated in film and on TV.

Moviebob has also called for the "re-forestation" of the Midwest U.S. by forcing its population to move in coastal ubran regions.

Hypocrisy much?

As per Moviebob's standards: "Anti-pandemic measures implemented by Donald Trump are bad because Trump is a superstitios Denier™. Anti-pandemic measures plagiarized by Joe Biden are good because Joe believes in The Science™."

LOL at Moviebob claiming to have grown up. Movies, TV shows, video games, et.al. can both be dumb and/or lacking in execution and be enjoyable at the same time. We all have guilty pleasures, a concept that a Thinker™ like Moviebob should've known about before engaging in this conversation.

Film critics should also be neither stupid nor incomprehensible. Having a film critic who is both stupid and incomprehensible at the same time is how you end up with a Moviebob.

Disney marketing Chris Hemsworth's bare bottom toward children is perfectly acceptable, in my opinion. Hell, Disney's been marketing Donald Duck toward children for the past 60+ years, and you rarely see Donald wearing any pants...

When Bob reappears in your dreams, tell him the MCU is subpar and Lindsay Ellis will never love him. The force of his butthurt should ripple through the dreamscape hard enough for the real Bob to feel it in his dreams.

Boss: Ryan, this scene is supposed to be Webby and Mrs. Beakly enjoying tea while Huey, Dewy, and Louie play hockey in the foyer. We don't need to add in references to patriarchy or this gamer gate thing.
Ryan: Fuck you JOB! You think you can tell me how to animate? I'm gonna have Launchpad come in and get bunker busted by Gizmoduck! I'm gonna have Webby scissor Mrs. Beakly's throbbing, feminine penis!
Boss: I"m pretty sure you don't know what scissoring is and you're fired.
Ryan: I'M GONNA TELL THE WORLD ON YOU!

I'm not a smart man by most accounts but even I can see the fatal flaw in Ryan's plan. I can also see how there might be an issue in loudly declaring to the world THAT YOU ARE USING YOUR GAY SHIT AS A CUDGEL TO BEAT EVERYONE INTO SUBMISSION.

Like I said, I knew Ryan from back in the day on Agony Booth. He's an old-fashioned fedora atheist like Bob.

I would be very surprised if he's become a family man since then. One thing about when you have kids is you kind of understand this like... truce between parents - I don't bother or tell you what to do with your kids, you do the same for me. (and if we're compatible enough, our kids can hang out)

:story:
Understand, I'm one of those people who can't wait for the MCU to fall apart, so when I hear an installment is getting crap reviews I take it with a grain of salt, because I know I want to believe those reviews. By the same token, Bob's reviews are even more unreliable because he's constitutionally incapable of looking at these soulless corporate picture shows with anything like an unbiased eye.
Bob is one of those people who think that when they watch a movie, if there's lots of action/explosions/fights and a half-decent soundtrack, and watching it gives him emotional chills (which are dopamine hits), then it's a "Good" movie. Even if the plot/storyline is unhinged, poorly constructed, full of fucking plot holes (see: Eternals) and makes no fucking sense.

Ralph Barnhardt said:
Diegetic simply means "part of the world". It's predominately used to describe the soundtrack. For example, a non-diegetic soundtrack is when a pop song is playing during a montage in an MCU movie. The music isn't actually playing in the world. An example of a diegetic soundtrack is in Birdman where all of the music is played by a street drummer and only plays when he plays or is around. I have no idea exactly what Bob means by "diegetic ways" the movie tells you that this is a movie that's not supposed to be taken seriously. I'm imagining that it's as subtle as Thor and Whor headpatting a bunch of kids saying "This was made for you!" or they just look directly into the camera and say it.
Speaking of diegetic, I was playing Final Fantasy X, and watching one of the Jecht Spheres (it's like a video player in that game/world), and during the playback, one of the boss battle themes is playing, like it's coming from the sphere, and there's about to be a boss battle in the recording scene itself, making me think, OH SHIT, does this mean the Battle Music in Final Fantasy is DIEGETIC?! :o

But yeah, no, Bob i'm pretty sure doesn't comprehend diegetic and what it actually means. Otherwise he would have said non-diegetic. Unless he got confused over what diegetic means over non-diegetic, but even then, that still means he doesn't really understand it and was just using that word as a flex. "See how SMRT I am! I use words specific to the movie industry!"

Mean joking aside, I don't know what to make of this movie eschewing multiverse shenanigans, the thing that Disney's Marvel's MCU movies (tm) seeming to be heavily leaning on and the direction they seem to be going. That, more than anything, leaves me feeling like this movie is just filler material.
With Bob the added "Jane Foster is a Thor now! It happened in the comics so that means this is a GUUD MOVIE!" *masturbates furiously*

Also where the fuck does Bob pick up the concept that "stories for children" is the central thematic role in the movie's narrative? Because it's from comic books which were "for children"?! Sorry Bob, not good enough. That's as simplistic an explanation as fuck, and while that might satisfy Bob's pedestrian "film school brat" tastes, it's just not even analytical enough. It's the lazy, easy answer. And what the fuck does that have to do with "diegetic" and the signs (literal or metaphorical) he wants Taika Waititi to flash in the movie? Diegetic would mean the characters in the movie are self-aware of it - that they are a story for children, of Space Wizards. It would be some fourth wall bullshit. The fact is, that using "diegetic" in this context isn't the pwn he thinks it is.

Lookit Mr. IMAX here criticizing people for projecting :story:
What are they projecting, Bob?

But seriously, Bob didn't HAVE to mention the writing. Anybody with any brains that knows what a bad or sub-par movie is, would think about, first and foremost, THE WRITING.

And making shit up in your head to justify a movie with varying degrees of plot and story flaws as "comprehensible" doesn't count, Bob.
So when he* babysits his 4 and 6 year old nephew and niece he'll show them Thor (any of the four MCU movies) to entertain them?

OK Bob, what is the "grown-up take" on Randomguy98's comment, then?
Never mind poor writing? Grown ups ignore it for the greater good or some bullshit? Is this a dobsonesque "Don't criticize the writing of x, it's already been made and people aren't going to go back and change it!" moment for Bob?

JayHarrison said:

Not only is Bob stupid and incomprehensible, his incomprehensibility and stupidity make him a turbo-hypocrite as he calls others stupid, and strawmans the SHIT out of their arguments when they call him out on his bullshit. Too bad that one guy blocked Bob because I would have LOVED to have seen Blob justify his take on the Scorsese movie Silence that he thought was a "miss". Holy shit, he may have "watched" the movie, but he sure as shit reviewed it like someone who either hadn't watched it, or didn't understand it. Since Bob claims he DID watch it (in order to review it), posting that he had indeed, watched and reviewed it, and having THAT take, isn't the "gotcha!" he thinks it is.
