Personally, I think that Hollywood executives underestimate people's desire for sincerity in their entertainment. Just look at Top Gun: Maverick: it's the highest grossing film of the year and at no point does it wink at the audience to remind them of how "stupid" this all is, instead opting to let them get swept up in the melodrama of it all.

Similarly, Wonder Woman was a big hit five years ago, and that movie never felt the need to consciously undermine itself by employing bathos during emotional moments.

Really, what I think this obsession with bathos in major blockbusters like the MCU signals is a lack of confidence in the material from the people making them. They seem to be embarrassed on some level by displays of sincerity coming from movies about "people wearing silly costumes with silly names designed for silly books made to sell gum for kids", and project that embarrassment onto the rest of the audience.

As to why Bob defends this approach to the material, is it simply him working backwards from being an MCU fanboy, so he must defend them from any criticism no matter how well founded? Or is he on some level embarrassed for liking it in the first place, so he likes them having copious amounts of bathos to reassure him that he's cool?

Well and what's fucking obnoxious, because I think even Bob pointed this out a looooooooooooooong time ago. There's a bit in I'm pretty sure it's the first X-Men movie. Kinda right before the big battle. When the team is assembled and they get uniforms. And Wolverine scoffs at them, and Cyclops asks "would you prefer yellow spandex?".

Now, this is a line that's stuck with me. Because I always would have preferred that. Even as a kid, I knew that shit was kinda important to what made comic books work. Maybe not in so many words, but you know a visual medium is done visually first. And one thing I will always hold against those damn movies is that it's real hard to puzzle out who is who sometimes. Maybe not so much the X-Men. But other characters you would recognize, perhaps in a big splash page, like the way a movie would do like a long shot. You know, still with me?


Now, when the MCU started getting big. Actually even First Class finally dipped its toes in the water on this. Costumes were finally getting "accurate". And Bob pointed this out in god knows what video. So much, he fucking brought up that line from X-Men. He talked about the uncomfortableness of comic book movie writers of days gone. But, here we fucking are. We're still fucking there. We're still giving spandex shit, while wearing the goddamn spandex. Like goddammit Bob, MCU had to have one fucking audience on its side. And it's been pissing them off. And you can dismiss them as CHUDs all you want. But it's all slipping away.

Justina Pelletier is a girl from Connecticut who suffers from mitochondrial disease that has something to do with how her cells produce energy. In February of 2013, after her condition worsened, she was referred by her doctor to a gastroenterologist at THE Boston Children's Hospital. She never saw this specialist. Instead she was questioned and evaluated by a "neurology resident 7 months out of medical training and a non-MD psychologist". They concluded that this was all in the 14 year old's mind, the parents were either enabling her or doing a Munchhausen thing, they ordered all care for her genetic disease to be stopped, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand they took custody of the child away from the parents. The hospital contacted CPS after their evaluation and refused to discharge Justina because it was in the child's best interest that she get the best care possible, which was their care. For a year her parents fought for custody and proper treatment of their own child. During that entire year, BCH REFUSED to listen to any other doctor than their own because BCH are the experts and they're world renowned. BCH refused to let Pelletiers seek a second opinion for their child because BCH are the experts and they're world renowned. The court sided with BCH because BCH are the experts and they're world renowned. The court put a goddamned gag order on the parents, forbidding them from discussing the case. What finally changed? Did BCH figure out that they made a fucky-wucky? Did a judge finally listen to all of the evidence and gave a shit? *BUZZER NOISE* Wrong! Justina's father Lou finally said "fuck the gag order" and went to the press. Month 16 of captivity rolls by and like goddamned magic Justina was released back to her parents when the heat didn't die down. It wasn't science that saved her. It was that was that BCH was showing it's ass and people were looking and pointing at it.

This story does not end on a high note. Even though Justina was no longer a prisoner of a hospital full of Massholes who knew more than her actual doctor who was not part of the world famous BCH, there were massive repercussions from her non-care. She is now crippled. A 14 year old girl who was doing figure skating and going to school before her doctor said "Things are getting worse. Talk to this specialist at BCH" spent a year being abused by the state. A 15 year old girl was wheeled out of BCH so it could save some sort of face. Her parents sued BCH and the doctors who crippled their baby. Wanna guess how suing world famous BCH and their team of dedicated and expert doctors who only wanna help children went in a court in Boston? After a five week trial the jury spent six hours and found the doctors to not be negligent because the expert doctors were focused on the best interests of the child by giving her the best care they thought she needed. The fact that they were so wrong that they objectively and demonstrably harmed her is not important. Boston cannot look bad. This isn't me slagging on Boston because of Bob. This all happened because the world famous BCH could not be wrong and every institution in could not allow it be wrong either. The Masshole pride ground a girl into paste and she's just the one we know about. If they are willing to be this bad at their care just so they don't have to admit that they were wrong or they hired a quack, I have zero doubts that they don't a sub basement filled with other medical mistakes if not flat out human experimentation.
