How do I explain it without probably repeating stuff others already pointed out in regard of it...
After Bob spend around 20 pages giving the most shallow, wiki-eque information on Mario he could do to "explain" to the reader who Mario is (as if they wouldn't know by buying a book about him), Bob spends more than 40 pages of the book about how important Mario is to him. Aside of comparing the console wars of the 90s to his vietnam and branding Genesis owners as traitors and not true gamers and his infamous 9/11 comparison to the reveal of SMB3 in the wizard, he goes e.g. on how he needed Mario to be a big thing, how disappointed he was in the Mario movie as it seemed to ruin Mario in the public eye, how he relates to him thanks to his grandfather, the sheer level of disappointment that Mario was no longer from Brooklyn despite all the shit the toys and tv shows told him etc.
Its just really sad. I get having a sort of emotional connection to something silly because it reminds you of good things, but for Bob, Mario is not just something he dresses up as, plays and has merch of. For him, Mario is life.

The console wars are like Vietnam to him? Did he have "harrowing visions" of the Virtualboy? Did he fight through thick, sweaty summer lines to get his video games and get a medal of a sweat stain for his gallant efforts? Or did he beat up Asians to save his dear friends?

To be fair, I think this is how I would be if I were in power. If you were given the power to force your will on people and have whole nations bow before you, would you too want to keep things that way?
It takes a lot of confidence and willpower to accept that other people have valid points that are counter to your own. It takes guts and, dare I say, balls to admit that your enemies can be correct. It takes even more to admit that you need their help or to help them when they say they need yours.
Bob is not strong enough to admit that. Bob's just another pleb in the grand scheme of things who has been swept up in the tidal wave of history and is riding it to the beach, thinking the wave will never break.

Bob has fully bought in the to ideology and he is willing to commit all manner of crimes in the name of furthering that ideology. I don't think he's evil. He's misguided. Maybe if things had been different he could have been directed down a different path. Maybe better . Maybe worse.
