Now, a little lesson for y'all. No Roman of the Late Republic writes about how great the blue collar workers are. They don't. In fact, most of the Senators who wrote at the time were concerned about the plebs being rowdy because there were no jobs. And why were there no jobs? See if this sounds familiar.

When the Romans conquered Greece and the far east, they brought back plunder and slaves. LOTS of Slaves. The landowners used this cheap foreign labour to make a huge profit on farming and other commercial ventures, leaving poor Freemen with nothing except to either toil for very little, or go to Rome or other big cities and try to eek out a living. It was out of this environment that demagogues and populists like Pompey, Caesar and Augustus arose and they used the promise of work, food and land to convince poor soldiers to follow them.

There's a reason why some compare present day USA to the Late Roman Republic. It's a tad flimsy in places, but the similarities are there.
