The problem is the left has been thinking the right is obsolete for years. The reality doesn't mesh. We're seeing nationalistic movements rise all over the Western world in places where it wasn't even thought of conceivable before. The kids of millennials might actually turn out more libertarian and conservative than their parents.

There's also the fact that conservative/liberal pendulum swings back and forth, and it has been liberal (now extremely progressive) for a long time. People don't like change but they also don't like stagnation either. Wages, jobs and quality of life have all stagnated or been reduced. I don't see conservatives going away, but I do see the loss of respect, power and authority that progressives have. Particularly in local government and on the national stage.
