The difference is that their Christian parents demanded that they actually have some standards growing up, and forced them to interact with other people in church. Islam is a nebulous 'those exotic peoples and their weird and wonderful foreign ways' entity that they've never had to personally endure the strictures of.

It's a simplistic template to a complex series of factor and factions,he's theoretically more benign than people who think 'Islam' (a catch all term for multiple sects, cultures and over about 1.8 billions individuals influened by a long dead theocracy) is the devil but ultimatly he isnt doing them any favours any more than trying to portray Christians(a catch all term for multiple sects, cultures and over about 2.4 billion individuals influened by a long dead abrahamic priests' thoughts on a dead preacher) as white westerners is correct.

Part of it is that, yes. Part of it is also sheer historical ignorance: they can't comprehend how a religion can be much more to a society than what's become of religion in the western world because they have no idea that it wasn't so long ago that ecclesiastical courts were a thing throughout Europe and the Pope was one of the most powerful heads of state and excommunication could completely destroy people. So they don't quite grasp how Islam in most countries where it holds sway isn't merely a creed but a sociopolitical system that shapes almost everything.

In Bob's case it's both of these things (though he may well be a trifle more historically aware than your average lefty Islamofanboy, I'm sure he regards any serious expression of Judeo-Christian faiths as "the inferior past"), but it's also his incredibly frustrating Manichean outlook. He looks for markers so he has an excuse to dismiss any argument without engaging it. Trump voter? This isn't a conversation, sport. "Islamophobic" tweets? Lose my number, slick. Lots of retweets from Ann Coulter and the NRA? You're blocked, friendo.
