I get the impression that many of them believed it was a popularity contest to begin with and why they're so upset is because to them this looks like someone pulled out some dusty old rule to take it away from the true winner. Mostly cause a lot of them are either partisans with their heads up their ass or they were never into politics until this recent "EVERYTHING IS INHERENTLY POLITICAL" movement of "progressives".

How often have you seen the electoral college and why it's so important usually brought up before this? It's something they might brush over in a shitty history class.
