Bob has never read the Dark Horse comics for Hellboy...Or any comics in general. He only understands characters when they're in movie form so he can watch someones review on it and pretend to know what he's talking about.

With comic books you really don't need to be exact with the source material, hell they never are. What you need to is to find key points about a character and their world and present them to a wider audience.

A lot of people thought the Marvel Cinematic Universe is based loosely off of Marvel Earth-616 continuity, but it's not. It's more based of off of Marvels Earth-1610, the Ultimate Universe. From characters like a black Nick Fury to character costumes to budding relationships like with Captain Amerca/ Iron Man with Peter Parker/ Spider-Man.

I will admit continuity is kind of a fucked topic with DC but having someone like Bob explain it only makes it worse because all he could add is "Comics are weird! let's reboot again!". What people get hung-up on is not understanding Crisis on Infinite Earths is technically the only real reboot they've had as it ended with the birth of a new universe, any of the other times was more shuffling around stuff rather than eliminating them. All those goofy 50s Superman and Batman tales are still legitimate events but sometimes DC goes back and goes "Ignore all these dumb powers Superman pulled out of his ass. It happened but he used a time machine, he didn't run backwards through time". Even in the New 52 before the reveal that something was fucking with reality, Superman stories from the 40s (outside WW2 of course) and 90s were still actual events for the most part.

I don't understand why someone would supposedly spend money to go to a panel for people to say "I don't know either. It's not explained very well on wikipedia or youtube." instead of anything else. My five minute explanation above probably makes more sense than people like Bob going "DC is dum" and rambling for an hour how they're confused by people in colorful costumes punching each other.

You're kinda doing it a bit too. I more meant if you're describing the DCU, you're probably describing New Earth, THE universe since 1986. From a New Earth perspective someone like Batman has been one character from Detective #27 to now just with some alternations like not being from the 30s and not being a war vet. You don't need to know what used to be an Earth-1 story or what used to be Earth-2. It's just Batman.
