Bob, just because something is new, doesn't mean it's good. I know "preserving norms" is something only the mayonnaise-based undead do, but it's also incredibly useful when it comes to not having to reinvent the wheel for every little aspect of human existence, from one generation to another. Hey, news flash, Bob! Huge upheaval and social changes occured on a very slow scale until the explosion of technology in the 19th/20th Centuries. We're still trying to come to terms with the perks and difficulties that technology has presented to us and we're still not sure if we're going to keep ourselves from blowing up the planet. (Or from blowing up our hearts with McDonald's induced diabeetus.)

But to you, Bob, "progress" is a street that can only go in one direction - towards a future more in tune with your desires. There's no chance that history could be cyclical and lead to a constantly changing state of affairs, just like there's no chance you'll ever pass a McDicks without swinging into their drive-thru and ordering mcnuggets by the gross tonnage.

The biggest problem i can see with Bob's attitude to tech is he thinks it can solve the human condition and it needs solving. Bob seems to be interested in post humanism which would be fine but he see's it as a way of escaping humanity as opposed to improving it. The basic problem with this train of thought is that it's impossible to escape yourself and that technology often generates supplementry sociological problems-for example the industrial revolution ensured that every non-western culture on the planet was totally fucked as the tech gap became insurmountable. .
In short Bob only see's the positives of technology he never considers that we're clearly not ready for atomic weaponry, a unified world economy or even the internet to a degree.
We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…

I'm not a luddite but I always compare Bob's trains of thought to people who jerk off to ted talks (it wouldnt suprise me if he was a Ted fanboy), here's what people like Bob don't get about Ted talks or the superior future.

I wonder how Bob feels about the Mexican immigrants that make up a plurality of the minorities in the midwest. Are they among the mayonnaise ghouls that he describes? A great deal of them are conservative, farm workers, low-income, hard working, blue collar people.
