I've never viewed ignorance as a negative trait per se (wait for Bob to take THAT out of context, lulz). It's a state of affairs, not a moral failing.

As a friend of mine put it, a Zulu tribesman wouldn't know how to do my job, but put me in the Serengeti and in fifteen minutes I'll be looking for a 7-11, assuming the lions don't get me first.

This is a thing many people cannot grasp and i don't know why. Being ignorant of something doesn't mean you are ignorant of absolutely everything else. An example a teacher of mine always put is Sherlock Holmes: He didn't knew and didn't wanted to know that the Earth rotated around the sun because he considered useless knowledge in his trade. But he still was a master detective.

It can apply on other things, such as a hillbilly not knowing how to make a square root, but being able to make moonshine and take care of his crops. It also bleeds into expertise areas, where a person expert in 1 thing may be ignorant about what others take for granted.

On the other hand, we have stupidity. Illustrated by our dear friend Bob here: never admits failures, always thinks he's right and doesn't try to become a cultivated man. I don't mean he becomes a jack of all trades, just for him to not being so persistent in his mistakes.
