We know why no one likes the OSCARs. It's the same reason no one cares about the IGF, the Hugos, or Cannes (I know Cannes isn't an award show but it's the same problem). It's out of touch, self important, pretentious cucks patting themselves on the back giving awards not based of quality or merit, but to whoever has the most connections or whatever strokes the judges egos. The OSCARs has the extra sting of being a show where millionaires giving each other gold statues while claiming they are humble.

The problem with the Oscars is that it doesn't give any time for the movies for the movies. Most of them are just dull and aren't really fun to re-watch due to how obvious the themes are. Most of them a well made but I don't see myself rewatching most of them anytime in the future

It doesn't help that every oscar movie feels the freakin' same.

Cannes still serves a purpose in that it's the original "arthouse" film festival and is a glorified meat market for a lot of indie films that would never get released if not being showcased there.

As for the Oscars, part of the disconnect can be directly laid at the feet of Harvey Weinstein in the 90s, honing and perfecting the formula for marketing Oscar bait tripe for the critics and Academy members.

From releasing their Oscar bait films at the very end of the year (traditional dead zone, right before the cut-off date for consideration for that year's nominations), lavishing huge budgets (often the size of those used for big budget summer blockbusters) for "For Your Consideration" campaigns in LA and New York (where Academy voters primarily live), to the use of media cronies on his payroll shilling his films and fuck toy of the week for awards, it created an incestuous nightmare where you have films utterly detached from what normal people actually watch, nominated instead.

It got so bad that they ended up having to up the number of best picture nominations just to deal with the backlash in the late 00s.

It seems it is no longer about what a piece of media is in terms of quality or entertainment, it is about what is represents. It is the reason that even if the film is decent, people will praise certain film to the moon and back for what it seems to do in terms of social progress, all the while it is a cynical product designed to either sell tickets or toys. It isn't a surprise why there is such a sharp disconnect between critics and audiences with films like Ghostbusters 2016, The Last Jedi, Black Panther, Get out, etc.

(I will say on the examples that Black Panther and Get out are fine movies but aren't Oscar material and that isn't a problem at all.)
