I cannot stand people who turn genre fiction into some political soapbox. genre fiction is a place to tell stories in different worlds than our own and have fun within a different setting.

Yeah but they were written during times when their messages of racial harmony and fighting dictators actually mattered. Star Trek had their ethnically and politically diverse cast treated as humans who talked to each other about their viewpoints on a given situation during a time of legal segregation in parts of the country and tensions between different Superpowers. Twilight Zone was written during the Sixties 20 years after Dubbya Dubbya 2 where its anti-fascist messages would reach an audience that had fought actual fascists and not people they didn't like. Sterling didn't want people to riot in the streets, beat up people they didn't like , or destroy monuments they found offensive, there's an entire episode dedicated to saying we HAVE to keep the Concentration Camps standing so we don't forget the awful history they represent.

Most importantly they were entertaining through good performances and writing, you enjoyed the shows so you listened to the messages they had. Soy drenched media is so unfunny and boring because it's putting the message before the vehicle. No one wants to watch a movie or show that is a thinly veiled lecture where the story and characters are a secondary thought. Fuck all these assholes who need to politicize everything under the sun ad can't enjoy anything at all.

The tragicomic part of it is, if you take the seminal cyberpunk works- they tend to depict themes of corporations/NGOs overtaking or controlling representative government, the difficulty of privacy in a surveillance state, and individualism in a world where everything is mass produced. It's the alienation and paranoia of film noir with (in the 80s futuristic) everyone connected by technology. All of which is highly relevant to the present day.

It's amazing how modern ripoff artists love the aesthetic of cyberpunk but want to spin it into a positive when it was intended to look like a fucking nightmare.

And if your name isn't Henry Rollins, Ian Mackaye or Glenn Danzig, most of the "real" punks didn't evolve and just shot smack and enjoyed the self-fulfilling prophecy of their nihilistic first waves giving up, dying off, or moving on. Mackaye in particular realized how self-destructive the scene was. Punk (divorced from its offshoots like hardcore, pop punk, etc) died in 1984. You still had the crust punks hanging around but the message of "Drop out of society, stop showering and live starving in a squat" is inherently limited in appeal.

Well how are you supposed to believe in the Superior Future if you can't put a positive spin on the Cyberpunk society we're heading towards?

Dunno if it's autism spectrum or not, but I think Bob has a fundamental problem with distinguishing between fiction and reality. I said it before, but I think Bob has a basic problem with understanding that movies are not real. Like, on a surface level he'll acknowledge that they're not real, but from his behaviour it feels like he just knows that the characters and stories are not real while the underlying rules and concepts are, in fact, real. Like, the good guys win, the nerds get the hot girls, and the bullies are beaten. Violent protests result in meaningful positive change, and the main characters (aka those who matter) are never hurt during a riot.
It's not a conscious thing, just some underlying misconception about reality. The resulting cognitive dissonance is gnawing at him, especially since 2016. He KNEW that Trump couldn't possibly win, it was against his ingrained rules of reality, and yet, Trump won. So to him, this reality is just fundamentally flawed and broken, and it's killing him. The only way he could reconcile this is by treating this as the second act of storytelling, where the protagonists have to fight increasing odds, so he slips further and further into demented, radical thoughts of revenge.
On the other hand, he also thought he was already through his second act, with the struggles of his highschool bullying being the low point, and with Obama and then Hillary coming the time of redemption and reward for him. So he's currently raging impotently at reality not aligning with his vision.

Tl;dr Bob has some fundamental cognitive dissonance about reality and it's breaking his smooth brain.

So Moviebob's core malady is that he thinks the world is a movie? I guess that name was well-chosen after all.

It's like SJW shit is the "Darker and edgier" sequel to hippie ideals, as some kind of revenge against Nixon, when they became convinced that since their vision of the world did not emerge from easy evangelism and well-placed photo ops, it must instead emerge from the ashes of all which came before. And Bob could sympathize with that, because he peaked very early in his life, and only later had all of the hopes given to him by pop-culture dashed against the real world.
