Bob, in his mind, must elevate everything he likes to godhood and disparage everything he doesn't like to cancerous bile. He can never be comfortable with anything but an extreme. Because he's a malignant narcissist.

Is he autistic? I don't think so. He doesn't show any of the hallmarks to me, but I'm no expert.

Is he autistic?
As I said when this topic last came up:
The thing is that, and for once I'm not using this word as an insult, Bob is probably autistic.

He doesn't understand social cues, he has obsessions with things most people consider trivial or childish, he doesn't take good care of his appearance, and he gets angry incredibly quickly. Given that autistic cows can be incredibly deluded (Chris Chan, for instance), that would explain why Bob thinks what he does.

My wish for Bob Is that he dies miserable, alone and unloved.
Boy have I got great news for you! You will get your wish, just be patient.

Also, thanks a million Positron for cataloguing Bobert's imbecility for us. I don't know how brain-damaged you have to be to simp for Lardo Retardo, but I bet that the poor wrangler responsible for Lass Library has to change their diapers once every couple of hours

I disagree. While Bob certainly has some traits associated with autism (poor impulse control, bad social skills, hyperfixations) those traits all have other possible explanations, and several key factors of his personality/behavior outright contradict it. I'm going to give my hot take on why down below. Please keep in mind I'm not a doctor and this isn't even remotely medical or clinical.

- Bob seems to have some form of superficial charm. I know when you look at that scowling, sunken-joweled lard ass the last thing you think is "charming" but he has a dedicated fanbase even if it's shrinking, and there are many people who watch his videos and like them without even realizing he's a jerk. Usually he alienates people when they spend extended periods of time and he says terrible things with him or ask him probing questions and he gives heinous answers. With an autistic person, you usually get the opposite. They're usually really bad at making first impressions because they're very fidgety, detached or awkward. You don't really see a lot of situations where someone with ASD seems totally normal and approachable at first but then outs themselves as a jerk later on.

- Bob's affect doesn't really match any kind of autistic characteristic. You'd expect a flat affect, straightforward or literal expressions, a matter-of-fact, dry tone and when emotions are expressed, they'd be highly expressive to the point of almost seeming cartoonish. Subtlety can be difficult for them and they can have a lot of trouble determining what someone's face or the tone of their voice means if it isn't super obvious. Bob has a pretty normal, even upbeat affect and seems to have decent control of his outward expressions. The things he says are usually pretty stupid, but he says them with confidence.

- Autism usually comes with a strong physical component where they'll be extra sensitive to sensory stimulation. This leads to fidgeting, messing around with objects, touching or feeling things in a weird way, or some kind of repetitive movements and/or ticks. Bob's movements lack any of that in his videos. His movements never see very hyperactive or stiff. The closest he comes to that is his annoying reliance on Youtuber Explainy Hands, but that's more overacting than anything.

I think Bob is a vulnerable narcissist and I think those symptoms fit pretty well, and I'll explain what I mean in another post. But as always, this is pure speculation and not meant to be an expert analysis.

It's not clinical, but it sure is interesting that all our very amateur speculation keeps hitting on narcissism.

In this post, I'll be going over a few of the reasons I think Bob Chipman is a vulnerable narcissist. Before we begin, I have to stress again: I'm a layman, I'm not an expert, I don't have the medical ability to diagnose anyone, and even if I did I'd need to do a full diagnostic interview and psychological evaluation on Bob before I could diagnose him with anything short of a head cold. I say this not because I assume you care that much, or you're not smart enough to know, but for my own conscious. I absolutely despise it when people recklessly throw around medical terminology and act like experts when they don't know anything and end up judging or hurting people. This is only meant as speculation and a very basic character judgement. My knowledge of narcissistic personality disorder comes from bits and pieces I've picked up from reading articles and watching videos on the topic. I'm bound to miss some things or get them wrong, take what I say with a grain of salt, and also keep in mind that I might be very, very biased because I really don't like Bob.

For this post, I'm mainly going to use this Mayo Clinic article as a source, occasionally linking to other sources as needed.

With all that out of the way, let's have a look at the traits I think Bob embodies, and why I think so:

1. Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance: this one is pretty self-explanatory. He refers to himself as a "coastal elite" and brags about how much smarter he is than the average person. He talks about how the popcorn flicks he likes are actually high art on par with the great classics of film and literature, and seems to hold a high regard for his "profession" and talks as if he's an expert in his craft even though he's average at best.

2. Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it: this goes back to him calling himself an "elite" and acting very haughty and self-important even though he's a mediocre internet critic who makes sketches in front of a greenscreen. There's really nothing to back up his characterization of himself as a "coastal elite" other than the fact that he lives in a coastal city. Even though there's nothing to really put him above the average midwest factory worker he still takes delight in calling them "mayo ghouls" and acting like he's better than them. He's also refereed to far more successful content creators as his "peers" even if they don't know him.

3. Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate: This is his "Star Trek Future" fantasy to a T. While most people would just indulge in a Star Trek fantasy for fun and discard it later, he clings to it violently and keeps bringing it up or alluding to it. He gets genuinely angry when talking about it, says he "earned" it and it was "robbed" from him by mayo ghouls, and he obsesses with any indication that it could be coming closer.

4. Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people: Bob separates everyone into two castes: "Coastal Elites" and "Mayo Ghouls." He's constantly disparaging and insulting the latter and speaks of them in very disgusted, dismissive terms and alludes to the idea that they're not even really human. He's better than them, and he should be hob-knobbing with other elites like Lindsay Ellis and Hillary Clinton.

5. Monopolize conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior: I'm not sure about the first half because I've never seen him talk one-on-one with anyone, but the second half is dead-on. He's constantly calling people "ghouls" and "things" and says they're obsolete, they're dying, they're useless and they need to be disposed of or replaced. Half his Twitter feed is just him calling people subhuman for not being like him.

6. Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others: He has about zero empathy for anyone in a rural area who voted for Trump and openly claims they can't be reformed or helped. He doesn't acknowledge that they're humans with feelings who might have a good reason for thinking the way they do. He doesn't take any time or care to understand them, he just wants them gone.

7. Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious: Definitely fits, given everything above.

8. Have significant interpersonal problems and easily feel slighted: His stories of Highschool and family troubles suggest this is true. He seems to run into personal conflict with everyone he meets and, if you believe him, is bullied a lot by people who are intimidated by his intelligence.

9. React with rage or contempt and try to belittle the other person to make themselves appear superior: Again, this is like half his Twitter feed. He's constantly insulting and mocking people, getting into fights and dishing out "hot takes" to an alarming level. Of course, this also describes a lot of people who use Twitter and even the rest of the internet, so take it or leave it.

10. Have difficulty regulating emotions and behavior: He's had to backtrack publicly multiple times after saying he supports eugenics or cheering on the actual killings of people he doesn't like. He gets angry or haughty and says things he has to take back because he can't hold his contempt in.

11 and 12. Feel depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection and Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, vulnerability and humiliation: He never really seems to be actually happy. In addition to constantly bitching on Twitter about the things he "deserves" but doesn't have, he's also admitted multiple times that he struggles with depression and sometimes doesn't even want to get out of bed. He's shown many signs of being deeply unhappy with his life and the way it's going, even if admitting that to the "mayo ghouls" would make him sick.

Great post. I once pasted the same set of symptoms, but I didn't elaborate in such depth (thinking, maybe, a lot of these symptoms speak for themselves when it comes to Bob). There's one I'd argue, although it's a small point:

While the "superior future" fantasy is one we constantly mock him about (and for good reason), I think this has more to do with Bob's inability to separate fantasy from reality on at least some level. Maybe that post-singularity future really IS coming, but Bob can't seem to understand it's decades if not centuries away. This feels more like his fantasies about a paradise world for him to live in forever, instead of the crapfest he currently occupies, both because of the general state of the world and, more importantly, his own behavior.

But I do think Bob really does harbor fantasies about success and power. He just doesn't talk about them much. But every now and then, most prominently when James Gunn comes up, he mentions something about following a similar arc: from indie journeyman to mainstream director to a significant player in Hollywood blockbusters. Combine that with his occasional posting of his ludicrous screenplays, and I think Bob's fantasies are about becoming a cultural icon -- first a film critic, then an indie filmmaker, and finally getting the attention of the big boys and doing something on the level of MCU films.

The older he gets without even hitting the first marker, the more bitter and resentful he becomes, and the more his frustration gets directed to all those people who don't recognize his brilliance.

I'll throw in my hat here and agree it's narcissism, not autism, that drives him.

I've alluded to the one acquaintance in my life that was the most like Bob, and while he only hits maybe 4 or 5 items on that cheklist, he was just as insuffrably angry and contemptuous of everyone and everything in society except science-fiction on TV.

I don't think that old friend, nor Bob, had it bad enough to be clinically diagnosed, but, you could see they had the TENDENCIES towards it.

Looking back a decade later, I really cannot recall a time when that old friend of mine was truly happy, not post high-school, in the adult world, even hanging out with me, there was an underlying feeling of "well, what's going to set him off today?" that ran in the background of all conversations/activities.

Got to the point you couldn't' even play pinball with him or take him to a ball game free of cost to him, there'd always be SOMETHING wrong about the experience that he couldn't hold in and had to loudly complain about. Something not just inconvenient, but fundamentally and personally UNACCEPTIBLE.

It's never just a part of life, every thing that ever happened that denied him his (as he saw it) ordained future of leisure and success was the deliberate fault of another person at worst, or, the fault of a person too dumb to do it right at best..... and it extended to things that didn't even matter. Just hitting a pothole on the way to work, even if it didn't make you late, even if it didn't cause you to blow a tire, even if all it did was jolt your teeth? That was still enough to send him into a tirade about the incompetency of everyone else in town failing him by letting that pothole exist .... Even if it was a brand new one that opened up overnight and was filled with fresh asphalt by lunchtime? Didn't matter, the fact it existed for him to hit was proof enough that the world didn't treat him fair.....

He complained about work crews being out at 2am in front of his house one night in January to fix a burst water main ....

So, you'd rather they not show up? That you not get water service back in time to have a warm shower in the morning?

Nope, see, I "didn't get it"

That water pipe should NEVER have burst in the first place! If people just "did their jobs" and "designed things right" it could've been completely avoided.

There is no such thing as a benign accident or innocent mistake to Bob-types, as my ex-friend showed quite clearly, every time he trips, someone ELSE has to pay for it.... IMMEDIATELY and HARSHLY.

The endless sense of bitterness means they can't keep friends and can't ever draw the connection between being bitter and unhappy all the time and having no friends, and when told maybe they should just take the lumps in life like everyone else? Boy do they get mad at you suggesting they deserve the same as the "sheep".

Well, because while all autists are narcissists (being mentally age 5 means you really have no adult concept of "other" and can't develop one) not all narcissists are autists (malignant self-centeredness doesn't necessarily mean immaturity)

Arguably it's worse because you should have the capacity to if not know better than to at least act better....

Robert is retard Humbert Humbert, and without the balls to do anything half as horrible.

Dude compared console wars to Vietnam. He's somewhere on the spectrum.

Honestly, the utterly delusional notion of people bullying Bobert The Stupid because they are "Intimidated by his intelligence" is one of the most unintentionally HILARIOUS things to be shat from the infinite void between Bobert's ears. He is clearly incapable of distinguishing reality from his fantasies of being somebody who matters.

It reminds me of that old ”enlightened by my own intelligence” meme.

It's strange that Bob never got into LOTR - his friend Spoony and other nerds are big fans of the franchise, and you'd think with all of the "Grrl Power" scenes and characters that Peter Jackson introduced to the movie versions, that Bob would hop on the bandwagon. I'm guessing the movies are too long and literary for him. He's also proven that he's a big fan of oppressive governments (like China and Skynet.) He probably thought Saruman did nothing wrong by bringing industrialization to those outdated mayo ghoul Hobbits. Why if Frodo and Samwise had just stood down and let Sharkey do his thing, he would have had the Hobbits in theatres watching Capeshit within 50 years!

If MovieBob had ever found the One Ring, he'd probably fall under its spell and try to use it right away. Only for the Ring to realize what a waste of blubber Bob is and launch himself off of Bob's fat ring finger to try his luck with someone else. Even Gollum in all of his baby-eating majesty couldn't creep out the One Ring as much as Bob would.
LOTR is too old school and "loved by the wrong people" for Bob to ever associate with. Which is ironic, as I can truly see Bob being the biggest cheerleader around for the upcoming Amazon LOTR series, which is gearing up to be pretty much be an Irreversible-style rape of the LOTR franchise, to the point that they drove off the Tolkien estate people that they were forced to hire on to keep them from voiding the terms of the licensing for their show due to the showrunners and Amazon doing their damnest to rape the franchise.

(for those not aware; the Tolkien estate had the foresight to put into their contract with Amazon a ton of clauses to minimize the rape of the LOTR lore and franchise:

They couldn't use ANY named characters from the franchise, had to set it during a period in the LOTR timeline that was completely blank slate and far from the events Tolkein wrote, couldn't genderswap or raceswap any existing characters, and anything that Amazon's writers wrote COULD NOT impact or alter or change context to ANY of Tolkien's storylines or characters. And they forced Amazon to hire a Tolkien estate rep who's job it was to watch the production team like a hawk and tell them to stop/abandon ANYTHING that would void the terms of the licensing contract Amazon signed for the show. So that if the project was looking to be a franchise harming wokefest, that Tolkien could kill the project before it made it to the public, along with preventing Amazon from suing them by claiming they were warned by Tolkein's estate for voiding the terms of the deal before they hit the killswitch on their deal with Amazon.

The Tolkien estate guy found that Amazon and their woke anti-life producers never intended to honor the terms of the deal regarding the above mentioned restrictions and were actively and aggressively trying to defy them, as much as humanly possible to the point of having their own lawyers looking for loopholes/ways to skirt the restrictions to the furthest they could without outright voiding shit. The estate guy eventually ragequit because Amazon and the producers basically dared him to push the killswitch button and production is currently on hiatus as Covid delayed shit combined with Amazon ordering the first two episodes filmed so they can see what they've got (and how bad it is/if Tolkien's estate will not pull the killswitch button on it) before continuing and making the necessary retools if it turns out that they have a huge flop on their hands)

Shockingly that last one has one villain that could've worked had Gunn kept them grounded. And they already used him in a previous SS film. Vandal Savage. He would've worked much better as the main antagonist of the film since he has a similar grasp as Ra's without the backing up of the League of Assassins. He could've been the dictator villain with diplomatic immunity the Squad would've face against, and still fit with the concept.

I feel Gunn really wanted to use Starro that he forgot Starro is a JL-level villain. Not a SS level threat

Starro works in so far as the first film had a cosmic horror villain (the Succubus) and that doing anything overtly political, especially with a piece of shit pedophile like Gunn creatively in charge, is going to be a huge nightmare and offend people with Gunn's own toxic brand of pro-pedophilia/pro-cancel culture but only when it's used to silence the right radical leftist politics.

A political driven Suicide Squad in today's climate would be akin to the abortion of lies and bullshit that was the second season of the Jack Ryan Amazon show, which had Amazon ignore reality and claim that Venezuela was a right wing dictatorship that was hell on earth solely due to the "right wing dictators" in charge of it and paint the commies who are actually to blame for Venezuela being a hell on Earth fascist dictatorship, as "freedom loving rebels trying to save the country from the poverty and squalor nightmare that the right wing fascists plunged it into". Better they fight Starro than deal with Gunn spewing the latest DNC talking points for whatever war Biden and Harris are dreaming of carrying out.

Further, it's a workable passive-aggressive "take that" to the Snyder set as one of the reasons Starro wasn't allowed usage in the JLA film is that Warner and DC think Starro is "silly" and "stupid" and decided Darkseid would be "sexier" and "cooler" to use instead.

Also, Vandal Savage is a garbage character, someone only used in the comics when a writer wants to use a villain people actually care about but keeps getting told "no.... no... no...." like Betty Boop rejecting an evil suitor and the editor pulls ranks and forces them to use a mort like Vandal Savage instead of a villain people want to see or makes sense in the context of the book's characters.

Dammit, Ninja'd! :semperfidelis:

But yeah, there is such a thing as co-morbidities. A person can be both Autistic, and have a personality disorder separate from the actual autism.

Bob's most likely got Asperger Syndrome, which isn't necessarily a severe form of autism - might not display such things as "flat affect" for instance, though there WILL be social awkwardness of some kind, maybe not severe but hey, Bob hasn't had a one night stand girlfriend in how long? Decades? One hallmark of this form of autism is kids seem to implicitly trust autists. (To my own bemused bewilderment, lol) and Bob definitely gets along great with niece and nephew. Autists with their child-like interests relate quite well to (especially young) kids.

I don't think Kirby ever meant the New Gods to be entirely separate from the larger DC Universe either. Darkseid and other New Gods were introduced in Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (written by Kirby at the time). Kirby always had a vague notion that he would end it with Darkseid dying in a final battle with Orion, but nothing was ever really set in stone on how to develop to that point, or how it would go down. Eventually other authors wrote an ending where this happened in Adventure Comics 460, an anthology comic. This being comics, he was revived a couple of years later for a JLA story in 1980. I think the overall transfer of Darkseid as a Superman/ Justice League villain has to do more with the New Gods comics never really catching on. Other writers and artists occasionally wanted to use the characters, so they would put them in anthologies or a story arc.

The DC Super Powers toys tied in to the Superfriends 84 revival, wherein Darkseid really really wanted to fuck Wonder Woman. Kirby himself actually did the art and some of the plotting for the Super Powers tie in mini series comics, which feature the League fighting Darkseid.

The New Gods were supposed to be stand-alone but a variety of events happened that led to Kirby writing/drawing Superman's Friend Jimmy Olsen and introducing Darkseid there.

Outside the JSA/JLA crossover and Great Darkness Saga, Darkseid was largely embargoed from usage in DC books until Legends with Super Powers V1-3 being the only times Darkseid interacted with the greater DC Universe (and the books themselves being quasi-connected to the greater Kirby Fourth War lore due to Super Powers II being a direct sequel to Hunger Dogs and the never finished Super Powers III supposed to be where we find out how Darkseid took control over Apokalips again as seen in Crisis.

(It's one of the reasons why Great Darkness Saga is such an iconic Darkseid story; as Darkseid's role as the main villain was hidden until the second to last issue of the storyline and this was back when Darkseid appearing outside a Fourth World book was super rare)

Legends, JLI, Cosmic Odyssey cemented Darkeid and the New Gods as part of the greater DC Universe with JLI having Mr Miracle and Barda joining the team and featuring Darkseid interacting with the other heroes and villains of the DC Universe. Byrne did a three part storyline in Legends that started the road for Darkseid being turned into a Superman villain though later writers in the 90s started killing Darkseid off time and again in part because they wanted Orion running Apokalips ala Kingdom Come.

Also, comic cancer Tom King was cowriting the New Gods film which was rumored to be a partial adaptation of the Mr Miracle mini that King wrote. A mini that was widely reviled by Kirby purists due to King being in the camp (along with other writers such as Keith Giffen, Grant Morrison, and Jim Starlin) who hate Orion/stan Mister Miracle instead and basically echo non-Kirby purists views that Orion is a spoiled, selfish asshole (which is kind of true) and that Scott Free got fucked over being raised in a literal hell while Orion, got to grow up in the lap of luxury and not only is ungrateful to his benevolent adopted family, but in general grew up to be a murderous little shit that antagonizes everyone he's with to the point that even Superman has had to bitchslap Orion in terms of even Superman not being able to tolerate being in the same room as Orion without smacking him in the mouth.
