I was watching Terminator 3 the other day, and it's hard to believe it came out almost 20 years ago, because there's so much bad self-referential comic relief in it.

Yeah, John Connor was pretty fucking useless in that movie, but at least he was in it and they tried to acknowledge, however half-assedly, that he was vital for the coming ward. Unlike, say, another T2 sequel I could name.

IME, nerds tend to be smart (or at least knowledgeable) in a very narrow range of topics and trade off everywhere else, hence poor social skills, monomanias, etc. They also tend to fall prey to the notion that intelligence generalizes even without domain knowledge, hence the common fedora belief that they can rebuild society from first principles without leaving mom's basement. (Anyone who has spent time around doctors is painfully aware of this phenomenon.)

That's actually the main reason I fucking despise that film. "No fate but what we make? LOL, jk, Judgement Day is inevitable." It's why for me the Terminator franchise ends at 2 - just like the Alien franchise ends with Aliens.

I've been working through TNG. It's just so refreshing to see characters fairly consistently written from episode to episode, drama and obstacles to be overcome that make sense in the context of the show without becoming unnecessarily grimdark, and a complete absence of snark

It really was great television and great sci-fi. One thing I've found while rewatching it is that in the first two to three season, you get to see concepts and tropes that would become characteristic of all Trek going forward get experimented with and evolve in real time. RLM pointed this out in some of their recent Re:View discussions on the show, and all "Mike really likes talking about Star Trek" jokes aside, that is really neat.
