Robert Eggers Thread - Based period film director obsessed with historical accuracy - 'The Witch', 'The Lighthouse', 'The Northman', and 'Nosferatu' (2024 remake)

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I am so fucking hyped for Nosferatu I can’t even tell you. I’m no fan of remakes but…I think a 102 year-old classic is more than deserving of a newer adaptation from a good director. He is so, so much better than Aster.

It was a damning but not too unexpected indictment of modern normie audiences that the response to The Northman was middling at best, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. One of my favourite bits of pure viking kino:

I re-watched The Witch. I give it a 7/10. Great film but it's a little bit underwhelming for me and it would have been more interesting for me if...

If it was made clear Thomasin was the witch from the start. When I re-watched it that's what I was thinking at first and thought "Wow, this movie is very re-watchable and I appreciate that." But then you realize that no, the witches are real, there was a coven, the goat was the devil, and that's it. Which was kind of underwhelming and plays into superstitious voodoo horseshit. I feel like this works better -in movies that have a supernatural element- where it's being pseudo-realistic. It's kind of hard to explain but imagine watching a documentary on a real thing and then suddenly they explain it by saying "It was aliens!" It takes you out of that state of reality.

I also had to deduct points because of low audio mumblecore shit. The audio for the dialogue is too low and I had to watch this in VLC with the audio at 130% to just barely hear the actors. In addition, I had to watch with subtitles to fully understand the dialogue because of the old-English accents and verbiage. I appreciate sticking to absolute realism regarding that but it makes it more frustrating as a viewing experience.

The ones with Willem Defoe and John Malkovich, and Bruno Ganz and Klaus Kinski, were enjoyably terrifying. Can't get behind the original Max Schreck one, as I can't immerse myself in silent films, and yeah, the first one I brought up was, 'What if Max Schreck actually was a real vampire, and F.W. Murnau knew about it?', but, getting to my point, I have a feeling I'll enjoy this, likely more than I did The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Official trailer (Trailer 2) for Nosferatu (2024) is out.

Nosferatu (2024) is coming to theaters tomorrow on Christ's Mass Day

Here are some clips from the movie if you want to spoil yourself.

Also, if you want to spoil yourself with Nosferatu, here is his voice (yes, that is Bill Skarsgård, who trained with an opera singer to get his voice as low as possible)

Some interviews with Director Robert Eggers

Reviews are also out. The movie is critically acclaimed by most mainstream journo reviewers, with a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie's composer, Robin Carolan, who also did The Northman, released the Original Soundtrack on YouTube and Spotify if you want to listen. Daybreak is my favorite track.

Anyone watched Nosferatu yet? I most likely won't be able to watch it for awhile since my friends are not into horror movies, so I want to listen to some reviews by you kiwis.

Short and sweet of it is that it's really good. I'm not too familiar with Eggers works but the most of the scenes are very clear and visible except for a handful of shots which were kinda muddy or obviously CGI but they don't take you out of the movie too much. The performances all around were very good with the highlight easily going to William da foe.

I've been told Nosferatu hangs dong. I blame Saltburn. Now you can't be taken seriously as a male actor without showing full shaft. Tsk tsk.

It's pretty good. If you've watched Nosferatu before (especially the original), then you know what you're getting into, basically. It felt a little more style than substance, but the movie makes up for it with good acting and filming (like with every Eggers film). also no niggers, which is a plus

Robert Eggers is, from what I have observed a maker of intelligent, meticulous periods films who happens to be making genre films instead of blatant Oscar bait. The Witch and Nosferatu are horror, The Northman is an adventure story and The Lighthouse is a psychological thriller. Eggers, from what I've seen, is a cultured, educated man but he has an entertainer's instincts, which is not something you see much of anymore.

Just saw Nosferatu, and it's probably the best movie I've seen in theatre as far back as I can remember (though I don't really see movies so maybe that doesn't mean much).

Pros:
  • very creepy, dark, Germanic atmosphere
  • great music
  • Nosferatu has a great design and is a believable monster
  • dream-like horror scenes
  • great acting all around
  • good pacing
  • portrays gypsies as thieving creepy peasants that do weird superstitious things
  • no magic black people or trannies or "strong women"™ or homosexuals or anything like that show up in 1830s Germany; it's just white people like it's supposed to be
  • Christians are portrayed positively
  • the story doesn't have some romantic b-story plotline or an ending where everyone wins and is happy
Cons:
  • It's pretty long, so I had to use the bathroom once during it
  • Some of the accents are very strong, so you may not fully understand every word
I don't think this is a con, but it's a very sensual movie. All mainstream media is retarded now so they talk about it being "sexy" in reviews, but that's not what it is—they're just reddit midwits who can't think deeply. (The people saying Nosferatu is "sexy" in this imagining should be blacklisted from contributing to any media because they're drains on humanity's collective intellect.) It's filled with erotic scenes that mix sensuality with horror, disgust, and creepiness. If you're squeamish, be prepared to see rats nibbling on a half-nude hot woman, or zombified vampires biting possessed women without their tops on. If you think that's "sexy" then you need to stop watching porn.

The Lighthouse is one of my favorite movies ever so I'm gonna go see Nosferatu on the weekend.
Every time someone gets cut at work I repeat the line about Tetanus.

Eggers is probably the only modern director I actually follow outside of the Safdies.

The monster in the 1994 version of Frankenstein is shown nude briefly as well. It’s not remotely sexual in either of these films, though seeing Skarsgard’s prosthetic orlok cock was certainly not on my bingo card for what I thought would appear in this movie.

As for the film on its own, I loved it. Such a fantastic remake of an already great movie. The cinematography is beautiful and the acting is top-notch. I think I’m going to second what @he who has thus come/gone said about some of the characters having strong accents so what they’re saying can be difficult to understand. I wish theaters had subtitles for this reason.

I expected the sensuality to be notched up in this version since the original Nosferatu would have probably had even more elements of eroticism and grotesquery if it weren’t for the censors of the time. Also Eggers (thankfully) made Count Orlok loathsome instead of sexyfying him. I’m tired of hot, charismatic vampires.

Solid 9.5/10 for me. I deducted .5 since it was a wee bit long at parts and some of the voices are hard to distinguish.

Seriously though, go see it. One of the best horror films of the 21st century and it does a huge service to Murnau.

This matches about 99% of what I felt after watching the film.
I think given the source material Eggers does an excellent job streamlining the dialogue and pacing and the film is so much better for it in this regard. There are a few spots where it slows down a bit but those moments are few and far between.
When Hutter arrives at the village I was like oh they're gypsies! Hahaha I wonder how accurate that portrayal was for the time period.
Jesus Bill stop doing such a bang-up job on those evil characters. Holy balls was this Nosferatu creepy as hell. The accent was pretty strong, but I think it worked very well for the character.
Had no idea Johnny Depps' daughter was an actress or that she was even in this movie. I think she's gonna be the quintessential goth-girl archetype for a while otherwise she did a really good job as Ellen Hutter.
Willam DeFoe knocks it out of the park in this one, I can see him getting an Oscar nomination at least for this role.
As far as the "sexiness" or whatever the redditors are calling it I feel like it wasn't gratuitous and wasn't out of place given the nature of the film.
I was slightly disappointed in the final death scene, I wanted him to burn up in a spectacular conflagration or something like that. But I'll take it.
Overall I enjoyed it so go see it Kiwi's

Also what the fuck they're making a Monkey Shines remake, the preview legit freaked me out.

Edit: I haven't seen any of Eggers' other films, so I don't know how many Eggerisms are contained in this film. I do have to applaud him for his talent though.

After watching Nosferatu I gotta admit, I'm a little befuddled. How could he go from silly little pranks like rapidly flipping the light switch to being a full on child murdering incel. What no pussy does to a mfer. I think they kinda answered what brought about his downfall though. Drinking problem, same kind the guy from Airplane had, the milk bottle was right there but he kept missing the MASSIVE SUCKABLE STRAWS.

In all seriousness, very good shit from Eggars and everyone else involved. Was actually impressed by the acting of Lilly Rose Depp and her massive nipples I mean range.

Right now I'd say
The Lighthouse > Nosferatu > The VVitch = The Northman
