RPG Maker Games

To be fair, it's just Sturgeon's Law at work again. RPG Maker gets a bad reputation because a lot of the games made are like shovelware. That's what happens when people want to make games but know little about game design.

"I don't understand what the appeal of pens are, because I've seen people draw terrible stuff with pens so that must be all you can do with pens."

You have a strange mind.
How does that have to do with what I said good sir? I was just saying it doesn't appeal to me (though I'm not too big on the RPG or horror survival genres anyways, so I guess I'm not qualified to say shit about it).

But I've also tried out the program and couldn't get the hang of it.

So you've seen every single RPG Maker game and think they all suck?
No, but I never said that did I? I just meant that I don't care if there's good or bad games made on there.

You actually called me "good sir" so I'm incredibly dubious that you're even engaging with this conversation at this point, but on the off chance you're trying to be serious that's actually not what you said:

You: I don't get the appeal of ______
Third party: It's so you can make ______, even if it's terrible.
You: Yes! See it could be terrible! That's why I don't get the appeal.

Notice there is a different between saying "I don't like X" and saying "I cannot understand how anyone would like X".

I just swapped out the tool being discussed to illustrate to you how absurd your statement is. To be blunt: I don't believe you. If you really do fail to see what the appeal of a tool that can be used to create is then I honestly, genuinely pity you because there is no art in your soul and you lack even the imagination to understand what that might be like.

I suspect, however, that rather than this the actual situation is you're just pissing on something because you weren't any good at it. Because, seriously, fuck the violin. That thing is for chumps.

And that, sirrah, is what that has to do with what you said.

Uh, so, you just... dislike the program in general? You weren't exactly specific.

I'll be willing to give it a chance if you guys want me to. Then should I form my opinion? Or would you rather me STFU and GTFO? 'Cause I can do that too.

I'm just saying, your initial post was pretty vague as to why you don't like RPG Maker. If you're so adamant to the idea of not liking it, fine.

Actually, I think I should have elaborated, and this will sound pretty hypocritical, but I just find it a bit overrated. I mean I'm more than willing to try it if you guys want me to (and form more of an opinion from there). It's just that it doesn't deserve all of the praise (or hatred) it's deserved.

Plus as I mentioned before, I'm not the biggest fan (nor have played much) of the RPG or Survival Horror genres, so I'm sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused. And if you want me to elaborate more, then by all means, tell me and I will.

What's the big deal? He just doesn't like the program, why is everyone ganging up on him?

For many reasons, some understandable (not explaining my opinion well enough, bias against the games made on it, which really only levels out to just plain indifference, really). Some not so much (such as suspecting/assuming I hate it because it was too hard to learn. Not really, it just boiled down to indifference, yet again. I'm more than willing to try again, but not at the moment).

Really, that's what it just comes down to in the grand scheme of things, indifference. As I said before, I'm not the biggest fan of those types of games. I'll play them, if that's what you want to know. But I'm more the racing, platforming and simulation/strategy games kind of guy. I'm not saying I outright hate the genre, or RPG Maker in particular. All I'm trying to get across, as vague as it may be, is that I'm not particularly obsessed about them. And especially at the moment since I'm trying to learn how to make art and animation before I could do such a thing.

I've recently watched an entire playthrough of the RPG adventure game OFF. The rampant surrealism and symbolism kind of makes my head hurt, but I absolutely laaaahve weird indie video games like this. Plus the battle music makes me want to dance to the extreme!

I recently bought a game made on RPGmaker on steam. it's called Last Dream and has actually been pretty good.

Oh man. I love OFF, though I usually take it to the grave because that game has a horrible fanbase.

One game that I think fans of OFF and YN will like is Middens. It's a gorgeous, extremely surreal artgame, like OFF on steroids with better graphics and music by far. Although the story isn't as definite, it gets similarly disturbing towards the end.
John Clowder (the creator of these games) is an extremely intelligent but very (like wizardchan-tier, though he doesn't hate women) socially isolated individual. I almost feel bad for him because his lifestyle is so alt, but he seems to be happy so it's okay.

I've been meaning to check out other indie games such as Middens and Space Funeral, though I'm still on my OFF kick. I even listen to the OFF soundtrack to help me concentrate on school work! Are there any other indie games that you recommend?

God, I love OFF's soundtrack so muuuuch ;_; It actually was one of the things that inspired me to start writing music again. Conrad Coldwood is bae.

You already mentioned Space Funeral, There's a fanmade (I think?) sequel called Earth Birth. Many people have said that EB is better than Space Funeral, though I haven't watched a playthrough of it yet to make sure. (play SF first, obviously.)

I have two more recommendations - To The Moon is a fucking wonderful VN-type game about Scientists who help an old man achieve his life goals by manipulating his memories while he is on his deathbed. The trailer looks like some sappy cheesy thing but I assure you it's worth so much more than that.

Anodyne takes a lot of inspiration from Yume Nikki, but it's different in a lot of ways, too. I have never played this game nor watched any LPs of it so I actually know nothing about it, but an rpgmaker LPer whom I like says he loves it so I'll take his word?

I don't even care that this is necro'ing this thread but I recently got back into these type of games and binge watched an LP of The Crooked Man. If you like puzzles and being assaulted by ghouls (and feels) I recommend it. I'm trying to keep my computers full of space so I haven't downloaded it yet.

LISA is another one I've heard a lot of great things about.
