Just finished the two major LISA fangames, Hopeful and Pointless, so I might as well give my two cents on those.

Hopeful is quite a bit easier and more canon-compliant than Pointless. The world is much more similar to the source material and so are the graphics. You also don’t have to carefully plan out every battle and ration your items so carefully, so it’s definitely a better game if you’re looking for a more casual experience. Hopeful also has multiple endings, which I had a lot of fun exploring. I’m always a sucker for that sort of thing. The game is definitely worth checking out.

Pointless is a lot darker than the original LISA series and significantly more difficult from a gameplay perspective. While the game follows the same general worldbuilding as the source material, lots of new lore is added on, and it almost feels like a different game towards the end of the first chapter. This isn’t to say it’s bad or anything; I had a great time with this game, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment.

TL;DR these fangames are actually good and worth playing if you enjoyed the canon games

The Ys games. My first one was Ys:Memories of Celceta (it's the 7th installment iirc)
Trails in the Sky 1-3
Trails of cold steel 1-2 (not sure if 3 is already out)

3 is out in Japan and 4 is just about out in Japan. Unfortunately, no news about the english releases for either of them...it's driving me nuts...

Damn hopefully it comes to the US by next year :/ it's one of the best rpgs I've played in awhile

I'm curious about what RPGs are good to play next for Switch/PS4?

Grandia Remaster
The Alliance Alive
Wild Arms 3
Dark Cloud
Arc the Lad
Ni no Kuni (I have played the sequel)
Rune Factory 4
Trials of Mana
Disgaea 5
Langrisser

Are any of these good?

Regarding Disgaea 5: Have you played other Disgaea games?

I've played the first 4, but skipped 5 because I found the gameplay formula was getting repetitive. I also find the very very meta humor kind of irritating after awhile because it just replaces actual jokes with meta humor. randomness, and references. After the 1st game the story just became a parody of itself, while the 1st had very meta humor and a lot of japanese references (Captain Gordon being a Flash Gordon reference) it had a reasonable plot and an actual arc that felt fitting. From what I asked Disgaea 5 is fine, it is just another Disgaea game like every other Disgaea game. So if you still like Disgaea play it, if you don't then it won't change your mind probably, if you've never played the series then it depends on what you want out an rpg.

1 has the best plot and cast, but ones after 2 have likely aged better gameplay wise as 1 and 2 have incredibly obnoxious grinding methods (2 especially is dog shit), so if 5 is your first Disgaea game and you know that Disgaea's entire purpose as an rpg is to make broken characters with damage numbers that you'll struggle to even count after you've grinded for a long time, then I'd say go for it.

It depends on what you want, Disgaea is a fairly niche series and you have to like anime humor to like the style of Disgaea at all imo.

Never played a Disgaea game before. I'm not really sure what its about

Is Ni No Kuni really better on PS4 than Switch?

How is the Grandia remaster

First NinoKuni is awful and the quality drops off a cliff right after you get the boat.

Trials of Mana is very good and you get one out of 3 different endings depending on your party makeup

Grandia Remaster, I would wait for a physical edition.

Arc the Lad and Dark Cloud are probably skippable. Dark Cloud 2 is worth playing though

Rune Facotry 4 is worth getting it's the strongest in the series

Disgaea 5 is less grindy than it's predecessors and has way more quality of life improvements. Especially since the previous game Disgaea 4 is fucking murder to 100%.

Langrisser. The PS4/Switch Collection comes with Langrisser 1 and 2. Don't bother with the 3DS version. If you like tactical RPGs from the Saturn/PS1/N64 era like Dragon Force and Ogre Battle, it's going to play somewhat similar to that.

I am leaning towards Grandia especially since I have enough points for it on the eshop lol.

Explain more about Ni no Kuni 1 please? I know the switch version has severe issues when it runs.

Never played a Disgaea game before. I'm not really sure what its about

Disgaea is a SRPG that has some decent tactical elements, but the main gimmick of Disgaea is it has absolutely ridiculous numbers where you can have characters stats just go off UI elements because they're just so big. Millions of damage is a joke in Disgaea because of how inflated stats become when fully maxed out. The story usually doesn't require much of anything compared to what the game can do, it is only if you care about post game does the rest of the 9,000 or so levels matter. I always finished the story, grinded to like a thousand and just stopped because most of Disgaea's gameplay just involves hitting things really hard and seeing big numbers.

This image and quick clip sums up Disgaea fairly well, the image is a post game boss in Disgaea 4 and the clip is of a fully maxed and buffed out character doing stupid high damage just cause he can.

Don't let the level scare you, Disgaea always has spots to power grind characters incredibly quickly, only your first 9999 takes a notable amount of time due to the initial set up and finding out what to do. Once you get a good set up, you can just power level to max in about an hour or even less depending on the game. Beyond doing big numbers, Disgaea has some decent tactical gameplay with terrain gimmicks, but overall you just numbers through almost everything and ignore most the strategy in my experience.

The battle system is shit, the little trainable monsters are nigh fucking useless all the way throughout the game. The fights take eons because of how dumb the AI in the game is. Everything in the game is tedious to do.

The game is nothing but pointless filler from the point where you get up to the boat until about 10 minutes before the end where you enter the final boss chambers.

If you want a globe trotting adventure where each leg of the game is a complete story arc get Dragon Quest 11. NNK tries to ape DQ hard but it does not even come close. The performance issues for NNK are the least of it's troubles.

Trying to suggest something not already listed so I suggest Might and Magic 7. Its the best of the series (Granted 6 and 8 have their charm) and mostly fixed issues with the previous editions. They finally let you choose a race and each class actually has a Min/Max on skill ranks this time instead of "if you can learn it you can Master it".

The Familiars were insanely unbalanced as well. I mean compare the Mite line vs the Dinoceros line and pretty much all the characters have something like that for their favorites. Add in the fact that familiars had not only different Max levels but XP rates and such, it made the game feel...wasteful if you spent too much time on a familiar that sucked.

I got:
Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana
Grandia HD Collection

Never played a Ys game but people seem to love them

I was going to throw out an obscure one but someone beat me to Arcanum. Jagged Alliance 2 is an awesome turn-based strategy RPG. It's a lot of micromanagement if you are autistic enough to enjoy that kind of ride.

The classic Fallouts are a good bet. There's mods and updates that streamline some of the goofy stuff. There's something oddly satisfying about accidentally having dynamite go off in your hand because your explosives skill is too low. You don't get that in modern games.
