RTS (Real-time Strategy) General - Gookclick anon can't find us here.

This. There's a reason the only RTS games that are alive and have healthy communities today are just old games that have been remade and get regular content updates, like Age of Empires 2 and 3, and most recently Mythology. Nobody can really recapture the magic that the old RTS games had.
SC2 co-op was fucking great. You could grind and get levels and skin unlocks and aesthetic, WHILE playing "pve" against the AI with a friend. So many cool subraces in SC2 that they could've given WC3 reforged the same treatment. An elf subrace with Illidan as a hero and naga units..

also this. RTS multiplayer doesnt have to be 1v1 tournument style game. W3 custom games proved it long time ago

Yeah, for all its faults I liked AoE3 for that aspect as well, grinding levels would allow you to unlock new cards (which fucking sucked in PvP because stronger cards were level-locked but they did away with it after a while and you'd start with all cards unlocked in PvP thank fuck) and would also let you unlock new aesthetics for your home city. Speaking of cards, that was a pretty cool element as well and I'm glad they expanded it in DE. It allows civs to have many different builds and can even transform how units function, for example there is a card for the Japanese which gives Samurai units a small mortar and turns them way more deadly against buildings (and they already start with insane siege damage).

Gameplay-wise I hear mixed things.
The story is written by the same person who wrote Borderlands 3 and SBI was involved in some places. It's about the level of a YA novel.
well thats a fucking shame
i know people had some issues wit HW2 story, but it wasnt bad.

Oh boy, I can shill Beyond All Reason!
  • Started life as one of the many Spring Total Annihilation clones and somehow escaped that purgatory of weird jank into a solid game
  • Free and extremely frequently updated (but not absurd sized updates, this is a positive). I've played with my friends in the morning and evening and had to update. GPLv2 for the autists that care
  • Defaults are 2k max units per player
  • Has 2 PvE modes for getting friends into the game/when you don't want to get sweaty
  • Tons of convenience when manipulating units to avoid being a gookclicker. Shift to queue up everything
  • Solid AIs
  • Server browser, not matchmaking. People seem to like to play 8v8s the most which means that your suckage can be offset
Three cons:
  • Engine/lobby can be a bit funky at times. Spring hasn't totally been escaped
  • No real singleplayer campaign
  • In multiplayer, servers are on their side (you can probably self-host, no idea how and would require effort) with some lame "modern" rules. Though just don't be a sperg I guess and you'll be fine

I think it could fit in either. There's more research and exploration than your average RTS, and it's slower going. But it's HEAVILY combat focused compared to something like Stellaris.
You can also get a game finished in only a few hours instead of days unlike Stellaris. I'm hoping we get some solid mods going for it in the vein of Distant Stars and Interregnum. Personally with the new engine I'm hoping for a Battlestar Galactica mod because I can't think of any other space game out there that will allow for the proper amounts of anti-aircraft dakka a Battlestar can put out, especially with the missile/PD mechanics. Oh, and the ship modules for even more build diversity, including both new weapons and even special abilities. As far as sequels go its definitely not as good as Sins 1 was, but that was after years of updates and a ton of expansions. Its got big shoes to fill, but I think it will grow into them.
I played the tempest rising beta and I was not happy with it. Units too big/map lanes too small. This was an issue for me that was getting worse as the C&C universe continued releasing titles. In red alert 2, tib sun, and generals, you had a lot of room on the map to maneuver units. In the TR beta, your shit was jammed into a small area/lanes.
That's disappointing to hear. From what I saw on the Steam page the devs were very much pretending it was absolutely not Red Alert and C&C crammed into one game.

Shit
Age of Mythology Retold
A remake
None of these are even out yet.
I'm not pessimistic. There are good new RTS out here like Men of War 2, Terminator Dark Fate and Starship Troopers Terran Command but the only way you could have picked a shittier selection was by mentioning Homo World 3. I mean new RTS are doing so poorly that Wargame Red Dragon a decade old game got new DLC.

W:RD is an RTT, not an RTS. Moreover, it's just something some of the Eugen team wanted to work on. It isn't like there were rabid fans begging for new content. RD is dead as fuck, which is a good thing. Fuck Eugen, fuck the French, and MadMat should blow his fucking brains out for giving the Leclerc medium stealth because someone on the forum said it was "kinda small."

SC Broodwar made it impossible for any RTS game to be considered successful ever again. Not because a better game cannot be made, but because after BW every RTS “needs” to break into mainstream e-sports. Which is not going to happen. Many of these games have more people discussing potential competitive scene than the actual gameplay. Don’t get me wrong, I used to love watching KESPA events for BW and later SC2 back in college but it seems like many people left in the scene are more into watching streams than playing actual game. It seems like a solid single player campaign or fucking around with your friends in LAN party/hosted game are no longer things that matter much.

Age of mythology Retold does look nice visually. Though I got the Chinaman expansion for the original and it sucked I thought and was way too unbalanced. I see that they are going to try again with China and a new 6th pantheon.

Honestly Id just like an easy way to mod new races into Warcraft 2. My dream game would just be a streamlined Wc2 where there is a fully playable version of Warcraft 3’s campaigns and some nuance like completed Burning Legion and Naga factions (which blizz never finished).

The potential for a fast paced rts in that style is there. Maybe if time allows I’ll end up doing it myself one of these days.

I'm ACTUALLY getting chills right now, Tasteless

AoM Retold has been very fun for me. So much better of a remaster in both graphics and QoL stuff than WC3 Reforged. I wonder who copied who when it comes to the concept of "hero" units, since both games have them and were both released in '02.

Wargame RD is an RTS and until the current sale more people played Wargame than Warno. Can't blame them the retarded unit system is a hard pass from me.

I don't wanna jinx anything but RTS genre seems the least tranny filled e-sport, nor do the games seem to have any woke shit, maybe because WC3 and SC are so big in China and Korea.
Though I had to sign some very gay T&C to play AoM:Retold when I opened it up, and apparently the game always records your mic.

Which is kind of weird; you would think people who enjoy RTS are fucking autists and spectre people.
And spectre people are on the record for drinking bath juice the most.
I blame the "real time" part of the real time strategies which is probably filters high functioning once from complete retards.

Could be because the genre is really niche now though I'm only basing this on the current state of AoE2 and AoE3 players as they're the only RTS games I am interested in. The vast majority of top players are oldfags who have either been top players since the time the games came out or they played the game as kids and eventually through hard work, dedication and learning reached the top spots once they got older. There wasn't nearly as much troon brainrot when they grew up and now most of them are just regular ass working dudes who unwind by playing some AoE. I watch tourneys and when the casters are on facecam (and they most often are high level players themselves) it's almost always guys who are either 28 at the youngest or in their early 40s. Genres that got troonified like fighting games only really became such just before Covid, though the fighting game community was never really worthy of respect to be fair, too many tards have been running around even decades ago.

Well the scene is not completely free of trannies. Don't follow it much anymore, but SC2 has Scarlett who's MtF and at was one of the better players outside of Korea a few years ago. Community simped for him hard too. There was also Puck who was either FtM back to F again or just MtF. Always looked like a faggot but can't remember if I'm confusing fucker with some other pooner or not.

so warcraft 3 reforged getting something akin to proper update 4 YEARS after the reforged release. I guess better late then never
as far as i looked changes aren't ground breaking, nicer lighting, mp menus look nicer, you can now change skins of your heroes in multiplayer (so you can have Thrall model instead of your stock farseer), rewording of some more confusing abilities and shit.
still have no proper cinematics in the campaign, still nonsensical changes to some of the missions and probably some other broken promises that I cant remember.
also probably will break some of the custom maps again.
also blizzard is doing warcraft 2 remaster because we didn't had enough of those.
cant even be bothered to look closely into that one
on less gay news theres small game Battle for Vera that Ive been enjoying.
kinda looks like dune 2, plays way faster but not insane
its cheap and maybe you will guys enjoy it somewhat

Highly autistic man returns with a WC3 tourney for the OnlyFangs hardcore wow streamers and a lot of them including tyler1 got dangerously into it. Really fun watching newcomers truly enjoy RTS and slowly unfold the concepts of timings, upgrades, countering and builds. Granted I can't relate to WC3 as I was mostly into SC2 when it was peak (inshallah may SC2 once again become 90% of Twitch streams).

He's streaming day 2/finals right now, else there's the VODs I guess? Idk how Twitch archival works. Of course, Dendi showed up and absolutely shat on the girls so that was fun to watch:

I always had ladder anxiety in SC2 but I practiced build orders all the same. The way sc2 did co-op was fucking genius: Basically scripted singleplayer missions but co-op and you had unique sub-race heroes to play with, altering the general concept behind the race. Illidan and his nagas would be a perfect night elf co-op race..

AoE never really appealed to me cause I'm not a big history buff, but I've too seen a lot of newcomers stream their journey on Twitch, especially women for some reason? RTS and fighting are forever-niche genres but man, I still dream of playing both. Just you and the boys 1v1ing each other, having fun and getting drunk at LAN..
