Run 'n Gun games - From Contra to Metal Slug and Mega Man (Turrican is a thing too I guess)

Came back into Blazing Chrome. I like it but some nitpicks: it's a little too easy and the guns lack impact. That's about it. It's a great Run 'N Gun title and it along with Super Cyborg look just like games from the 8 and 16 bit era's respectively.

I finished Valfaris and am working on a 2nd run. I liked the creator's previous game Slain when they re-worked it. I like Valfaris but there's one big thing I don't like about it: most of the weapons you get are pretty much worthless. Not unless there's some stupidly broken combo I'm unaware of most weapons you could skip. And the way it works is that you save up metal shards to level up your weapons. Most of the time, this means the weapons are 'meh' tier until you seriously upgrade them a couple of times. And not just once, no, you have to level them almost all the way up to notice a difference. The only exceptions would be your default gun when upgraded once becomes a Spread and the Railgun you get much later can penetrate multiple enemies. The only weapons I felt like were worthy of investing upgrades into were the Railgun and the electric gun. That was it. I felt like experimenting just wasn't terribly rewarding. A simple fix: make it so you can remove upgrades from weapons and re-invest the upgrades into other weapons.

I've yet to try Three Wonders. Going to try either tonight or tomorrow, I have a weird work schedule which gets in the way of vidya. But I was browsing the Wikipedia entry for Metal Slug and discovered a few things:

There's a PC port of Metal Slug XX (AKA 7). It's apparently a piss-poor port as only the Japs can do.

There's a fan remake of 5 (one of my favorite entries outside of 1-3) called Metal Slug 5 Elite.

I'm going to try this. Because I liked 5 even though it's blatantly obvious that it was rushed because the slide is worthless. The slide move was a copy of Contra Hard Corps' slide move only in that game the slide gave you invincibility whereas in Metal Slug 5 it's pointless because there's no invincibility or bosses or anything requiring you to slide. After the first level of 5 the designers completely forgot about the slide which unfortunately fucks you over when you try to jump and fire down because you will accidentally do the slide.

Edit: I beat Midnight Wanderer as part of 3 Wonders. Great title! Very much in ode to Ghosts 'N Goblins but with an art style closer to Strider. Another one of those great arcade games where you wonder why it was never ported to the consoles.

Not technically Run 'N Gun but close enough. Just want to mention that this came out:

It's on Steam. You can buy the Genesis rom right from the dev's site for $15. It's great. Aliens + Smash T.V.

Epic bump because I want to talk about the Huntdown.

Fucking awesome ultra violent side scroller. The game of my dreams circa the 16 bit era. Only problem? Epic Gay Store exclusive. I pirated it. Love it. May buy it on Steam later, we'll see.

Anyone tried Blue Dolphin?
Oh that one. I was wondering who the fuck bumped this. It's an arcade exclusive made by some of the guys who made the first Metal Slug. I found it very average despite some neat Dreamcast style graphics. I would say it's not worth jumping through hoops to get that Atomiswave emulator going to try it.

Seen this thread was bumped. Anyone like broforce?

Was farting around with gunlord too, its an indie game made for the dreamcast. Pretty easy to find a rom on archive.org.
Broforce was pretty good. A lot of it is due to the novelty of playing as those characters. But it's a fine Run 'N Gun title. Community around it is pretty dead now so I don't know how good the map making has gotten or if it stagnated.

Gunlord is okay. It's a "spiritual successor" to Turrican which I never liked that much. If you're a sick fuck who likes Turrican then I guess you're set?

On that note there's another "spiritual successor" to Turrican on the SNES that is very obscure called Rendering Ranger. It's even more obscure because it's one of those games that's a bitch to get working on most SNES emulators. I only got it to work on something ancient like SNES9X. Something something Byu is responsible for this and possibly could be. The Run 'N Gun sections are pretty good but I hated the Shmup sections which were pretty dull and uninspired.

Never played Turrican but I did get universal soldier from blockbuster one weekend and Im sure that was a licensed port of it.

I played elevator action returns recently. That's a good game, not as fast paced as the others. Its a japanese exclusive but most of it is in English.

Elevator Action Returns is great. It only got ported to the Saturn of all things and then repackaged in a Taito collection. There's another game with similar gameplay called Rolling Thunder 3 on the Genesis. You enter doorways and shit collecting weapons. Very fun but obscure game on the Genesis.

These games are neat, but pretty short

Dull and uninspired shmup sections are a genre staple. Turrican 1&2 both have them, not even that bad in those cases. Gunlord has a boring one but it's only like 2 minutes long so whatever.

Rolling Thunder 3 is ok but a step down from the first two. RT1 is one of my all time favorites.

Both worthwhile, Mechstermination Force by the same team is pretty good too. Actually MF is better than Cuphead, fight me.

1: Disagree. Shmup levels can be fun like Metal Slug 3 when you're in the submarine. Metal Slug 3 is the GOAT of Run 'N Gun. I'm bringing back GOAT, fuckers.

2: I didn't like the other two that much but I really loved Rolling Thunder 3.

3: Cuphead! I forgot about that. Great game but maybe a tiny bit overrated when it comes to difficulty? I don't think I'm being contrarian when I say that.

I like Alien Hominid a lot even to this day.
I remember finally playing that when I had a Wii for 15 minutes (yes, the hype even got me) and the Wii was backwards compatible with GC games. And I'm playing Alien Hominid and thinking: "Well, I'd rather just be playing Metal Slug."

It never got ported to Steam or anything else aside from XBLA. I would give it a 2nd chance and it's probably a blast with 2 players.

But wait, it gets worse:

Do you like Alien Hominid but want randomly generated levels and looter shooter bullshit? Well here you go fuckers! Tom Fulp is turning in his grave right now.

It's likely the best browser flash game ever made in terms of gameplay
