I'd still say their side characters are better done than ADV, and their main cast is competent if passionless. But yes, their refusal to alter anything to make it make more sense in English (HE IS THE THIRD CHILDREN!) is an additional problem. I think it was Rei's ADV voice actress who said they initially had a similar overly literal script back in the 90s but rejected it for a translation that didn't sound retarded in English.
 
This show is the definition of 'right place at the right time'. Everything involving this IP is laughably bad barring the character designs (which went to shit after the first three volumes) and the fight scenes (Which are brought down by the shitty animation). As much as people love to yammer on about muh wasted potential and muh monty's vision, the version of RWBY that reached its "potential" is literally a single-entry level ACTUAL anime away. RWBY is at its core, a Chinese bootleg Soul Eater made out of a pastiche of "I watched Toonami when I was a kid"core anime with some basic fairy tale motifs sprinkled in. There's nothing really groundbreaking or even mildly original about it barring the fact that it's made by gaijins.

And yet because it came out at a time when you had legions of kids and retards who were stupid to look up watchcartoononline, it was able to become an actual IP instead of being forgotten to time (wouldn't hold my breath about that but still) like My Life Me or Kappa Mikey.

Small FNDM drama. A 4chan regular in the RWBY general on /trash/, Calavera de Comala aka Hush, some Mexican guy, is obsessed with Neo. He has written almost 250k words of fanfiction about her. In a 4chan thread he admits to repeatedly emailing both Roosterteeth and now VIZ proposing that he can write a sequel to RWBY for them centered 100% on Neo. Which would be like a Harry Potter sequel centered on Dudley. The previous volume of RWBY cost $7m to animate, so we can use that as a baseline for how much investment he thinks is warranted to dedicate to bringing his fanfiction to full production, plus his own salary, of course.

Well, is he at least a good writer, if he’s applying to write professionally and convinced one of these companies will eventually give him the time of day and hire him to captain a sequel based on his personal favorite character, all from a cold email? ...No. He’s an abysmal ESL lacking even basic grammar. Each chapter of his fanwank is 20k words but I’ve included a small excerpt of the beginning for your reading pleasure.

Well, if it isn’t well written, is it at least popular? ...No. At the time of writing this, it has 15 favs on FFN. His supplementary story to the main fic has 2 favs. Neither has been updated in the past year and neither is finished, but that doesn’t stop him from spamming the inbox at VIZ (lol RIP RT).

There was a FNDM thing going on for a while after Ozpin's true nature was revealed that maybe he was the real bad guy or at least Salem was the lesser of two evils. Obviously this is stupid and didn't happen but there was some serious investment from certain parts of the FNDM in this idea and it caused a legitimate schism.

People did the same thing with Dumbledore back when Harry Potter was going on. Some people just can't see a character doing some morally gray stuff for the long term good without immediately thinking "He's actually EVIL!!!!!"

In all fairness the vast majority of writers will just have that character have a moment where they really are just evil. Or they've gone too far or whatever.
