Why bother buying s&box? You can access games sure, but those are probably just demos of the steam versions. So why not just play the steam versions and cut out s&box?
You could say the same about Gmod. eg. There are a bunch of prophunt clones on Steam.

For comparison you can run GMod on like any PC made in the last 15 years
A 20 year old game runs on 15 year old PCs.

S&box is now out for 20 dollars.

i think the required specs got changed since you've had made that screen, but uuuuh.....

I was about to say the old ones were definitely bullshitting. Minimum 6 GBs of VRAM seems just at the border of you having to use RAM to extend it. The recommended specs are also ridiculous and are not justifiable. I don't see how is this going to appeal to a wide audience when to run a vampire survivors ripoff gamemode your PC will be running at 100% just to get 60 fps. Nigger, I may as well just play the real Vampire Survivors AND mine bitcoin on my PC. That would probably still be less demanding and less destructive to my GPU than the s&box equivalent. And for people who will want to play DarkRP, the optimization is going to be much worse after every server develops their own bloated content packs.

I can already sense the incoming consoomer squad to tell me how "gtx 1060 is a decade old card and you're just poor" or something. Like they did in the Mouse PI thread to justify 2d sprites needing gtx 1060 with 6 GBs.

Parkerr is streaming this and his PC crashed as he was loading into some game LMAO.

Does this prompt you with the signature "You don't own this game fuck you we're just letting you play it :smug:" EULA before you open it the first time?

I wouldn't be surprised, garry probably doesn't want to go through the drama of nazi ww2 rps that happened years ago. With a new eula like that for his new game, it's probably easier for him to get rid of games and people he doesn't like legally.

Why pay money for a game that you won't even own?

Welcome to modern gaming in 2026! Unfortunately it's a common EULA in AAA games and some smaller dev team games too now.

Hell sony is releasing a new drm thing next month where you have to have a internet connection to verify your game every 30 days or you be locked out of it till you make connection again. :cryblood:

I'm already seeing the opposite. It's difficult to get any genuine opinions on the game. It's all the same skin speculators and "AI slop! $20! SAUSAGE PEOPLE!" tired nonsense over and over and over.

The organized review bomb is going great, and by going great, I mean it's at a "mostly positive" rating, with many of the negative reviews are people with 2000+ hours. I had to dig deep to find some "buy the game, review, refund" people.

I actually forgot how old GMod is.

I grabbed that screenshot off their website. I didn't check the steam page, though it would have been dumb for those two to differ.

EDIT: Yeah for some reason the min/rec specs on their website differ from Steam. Great job.

So I've read it's trying be a roblox killer, not a gmod killer.

If so thats delusional levels of retardation.

The workshop guidelines are likely worse too, I remember when Garry went on a rant where he wished he could ban all of those Nazi RP servers (which admittedly were bad) and other similar content.

is there even a market for these social sandbox make your own fun games anymore? zoomers have been pavlovian trained not to communicate in game for fear they’ll get banned and lose their vbucks
I spent god knows how many hours on a darkRP server and it was literally just to socialize and fuck around. I became rich from the daily allowance alone, just chatting it up. MMORPGs are dead specifically because Discord removed any incentive to log in to hang out. Shit, to see anyone play a valve game like TF2 or gmod is to go against the grain with a hacksaw. Roblox covered the pedophilia/grooming market; what'd garry expect? To bring back the furries?

From reading reviews, its basically $20 for unity that you can easily port games to Steam with, which is a pretty good deal. But for the average player, there is little reason to play it when Fortnite or Roblox gives the same experience for free.

If they just put like a $20 dlc to publish your games and made the base game free, they could've had something bigger. I'll at least be curious to see what gets output to the Steam store though. Hopefully not the same performance as base s&box.

I'd argue there never was.

There have been lots of games like this. Dreams, Little Big Planet, Trackmania, even Doom 2016's custom map mode. None really seem to stick.

So I've read it's trying be a roblox killer, not a gmod killer.
It's not trying to be an anything killer. It's intended to be a standalone sequel of sorts to Gmod, and a platform for Facepunch to make little games on. To have a Gmod like experience without the jank and issues that came from being a bodged together Half-Life 2 mod.

Similarities to things doesn't make it a killer of that thing. It's an amalgamation of Unity, Gmod, Roblox, and Rust. Maybe you could lump Half-Life Alyx in there, but I've not seen much said about the VR capabilities.

S&box seems to be having a rough release. It's currently sitting at 51% review rating. I wonder how long it'll take until it's at 41%.

Now down to 47% with one of the top 3 reviews being a lengthy negative dismantling of everything wrong with the "game"

Quick crash on S&Box in the last few years. COMPLETELY, ignore the "gmod successor" comment.

Absolutely garbage, horrible optimisation (their trailer even features the game dropping below 30fps.) that gate keeps the majority of people ever touching this "game."

Limited time cosmetics *released in a developer preview* over the course of 2 years that now have individual prices of $100+ (probably not for long, considering the "game" is kind of , mediocre at best.)

Worthless documentation until recently, where apparently it's still absolutely terrible.

AI infested, NFT/Crypto bro community who are 95% of the official S&box discord and reddit and forum. Literally every, single, damn day is ai slop vibe coding arguments and anyone who doesn't specifically want to use AI art etc is treat like garbage.

Toxic as hell community who actively bully / review bomb games, for example the Tycoon game that was popular as hell in the dev preview, was both targeted by a dude who decided "black hat for fun" and mess with the saves / gameplay ONTOP of the dev discord going out their way to specifically link it and review bomb.

Every game mode that has seen any fraction of success here, is a copy paste of other games prior. The only game that *could* be worth buying made with this engine, is going to release stand alone.

"Develop and publish to steam, free" is a straight up lie, there's still a $100 publishing fee involved.

Limited cosmetics that weren't even announced to have an expiration date at launch.

The entire "games" premise, is Roblox 2.0. This is not a joke or exaggeration, the entirety of this game is almost a 1-1 of exactly what Roblox has. Except in this you pay to play poorly optimised, unfinished games most devs haven't worked on for the last year.

Server filtering, finding games in progress, seeing lobbies etc is an utter nightmare.

The party system is, giga jank and has a tendency to drop half your lobby in a game while the others get left behind.

Did I mention they published a "paper crown" that they priced at $100? Or did I mention servers can literally toggle it so you can wear whatever the hell you want so you don't actually have to spend anything?

The Playfund was being hard botted before the release, for those who aren't familliar - the more popular your game is / played, the more developers get from the playfund. This is the exact same format Fortnite uses, and Epic TO THIS DAY is struggling with the exact same pitfalls of a billion bots generating garbage games content.

If you're wondering how bots can be that prelevent when the game is $20. If you bought a $0.75 skin in the dev test, which you could just click and be allowed in on, you owned the game. We had "3k" players at a point during the dev preview, and only 80 total on servers.

Ai slop galore also. And I'm not particularly sure what audience they were catering for with Terry.

One thing that helped Gmod boom was Lua being a more simple language. This time it's c#, which is wayy more rough for newbies.

This one's just a guess, but I feel like if a big game did come out of this, and it's released as standalone - then S&box itself wont actually grow its players from it.

Lastly, there's a LARGE portion of reviews that are from "Devs" for this game who have never created a single thing, yet have an extremely vested interest in selling their limited cosmetics at high prices, one of the reviews here is even by the infamous mod who was banning people for genuine criticisms that didn't break any rules (he has "5k" hrs in two years...)

So in all honesty, run, avoid, flee or whatever. If I didn't get this game buy buying a cheap skin, I'd feel like I was stolen from, and would have refunded.
