It's a large part of the "community". Supposedly they're losing money, but I've yet to see real evidence of that.

There's also complaints that games can include the payed cosmetic by default. eg. Some games have the option to equip a free version of the cardboard crown in their game. It doesn't transfer to other games, but it's basically the same cosmetic item.
 
majority of the steam reviews are saying it's just roblox but worse and how fugly the thumb sausages are. it also has only basic bitch gamemodes for now like sandbox, not-TTT and some vampire survivors clone. they're way too late to the party for games like this and i don't think anyone who plays gmod is gonna drop it for this, as jank as it's become over the past 20 years

I remember logging into Steam a few weeks ago, having a heart attack because I saw "You have an account alert", then realising it's just the s&box beta being taken away from me.
I hadn't played the game in months (maybe even a year?) so I'm not surprised that I didn't keep it, although I felt a bit upset because I remember getting it from an invite key from someone and being excited about it.

Interesting naysayer video. Yes, there's some of the usual "the game needs a unified art style, but no sausage people!" type stuff. But there is some legit criticisms from a developer side.

One idea hit me during the video. Why does S&Box use modern high res textures, high poly models, etc.? It should use something simpiler, easier to work with. Something like a 90s or perhaps 2000s era aesthetic. I know PSX style is hated on KF and the chans as being "troon shit", but it's widely used for a reason.

It pisses me off that they could have used literally anything else as a player model but instead decided it was really important to have the most simplistic style possible. Even nintendo miis had more soul than this, whatever frees up the release window I guess.

I'm gonna come back to this game in at least 3 months. If it takes them that long to fix all of the bullshit that will be so depressing.

You don't understand shit about texture work.
I thought you made video games???

The tranny PSX aesthetic still takes up way too much space even if it looks low resolution because every modern developer seemingly cannot fathom COMPRESSING YOUR FUCKIN TEXTURES.


I will explain, you can have modern high res looking textures and everything with the bells and whistles so long as you have good looking alphas and bump maps. There should always be options and variety to your texture work, especially when dealing with PC games.

Tranny PSX style games are still a lot chunkier than they need to be because all the dev does is jack off in Blender and fuck around with textures then imports them without that crucial compression method older devs used. And you'll have a pretty shit looking texture end up taking up like hundreds of megabytes. This is why a lot of games even shit ones end up being more than 18 gigabytes despite being short, devoid of content, etc.

It's also a matter of the engine used I guess.

Aesthetic means nothing when it comes to optimization and compression. Something devs, maybe even you...? Can't wrap your little heads around. You should look into it more. It's not that easy but it pays off and cuts everything down to size. And once you know to optimize you can fuck with cooler shit that rivals AAA gaming of the 2010s.

It's about man hours, and the amount of skill required to get something passable. To look at extreme examples. You can make a character skin in minecraft in minutes with a basic paint program, but a single character for a AAA game can take months to model, texture, rig, and all of that requires a high degree of skill to not be ugly.

Same with maps. A Doom map can be made in hours, the tools are simple, but more importantly, those simple maps work within the aesthetic of the game. Something like Source 2 takes way longer to map for, and the difference in quality is massive.

Ideally, they'd want an art style that's easy to replicate. To lower the barrier of entry as much as possible to get as much UGC as possible.

The game engine does not dictate what you do with it, within limits of course, but even those can be address with shaders. You can very easily make a game look like a PSX game if you want to, it's just a matter of if you have the skill to write the shaders to give the game/models the look you want. Just look at dark decent:


Sure, it doesn't look good, but it looks different than source 2, and completely removes all of s&boxs' character for their own.

Palatalized texture support was dropped from GPUs after block compression became a thing, and now GPUs cant do it at all in hardware unless someone writes a shader to do it but that has no gain and only losses over block DXT compression

Because you want to be a bit generic, "high end" as an engine, since it shows off the top end of what the engine is capable of. You don't want to give the impression its just a retro-style engine. Though having a mode/map that uses the PSX style might've been good advertising.
 
Gmod megayoutuber VanossGaming has finally released a video playing s&box with his friends. I'm not sure what the current highest-viewed s&box video is, but I'm guessing this will overtake that spot in a few hours if it hasn't already.

What I think is extra funny is that the video doesn't use the title "s&box," it calls it "Garry's Mod 2." The word "sandbox" is not said in the video except for once near the end lol. You just know Garry is fuming about that, even though it'd be in his best interest to just accept the attention and move on. Meanwhile, the reviews still sit at 45%.
