heres my take:
was mostly unfamiliar with Harland aside from seeing him roast David Lucas on Kill Tony. after watching this, i dont hate him, but hes not exactly my cup of tea comedically. he kind of came across as Norm McDonald with less substance and direction. the whole bit of spamming awkward non-sequiturs and switching between a jokey/serious tone wasnt particularly hilarious to me, but it did make Sam very uncomfortable, so if that was his goal, he succeeded. i dont know if thats the role he usually plays on his podcast, or if he could tell it was making Sam really uncomfortable so he leaned into it, but either way he got a reaction. now, in theory, Sam chimping out and destroying the studio to build a "gorilla nest" is really funny, but given the context and the vibes, it came across as Sam, the guy who likes being in control, resorting to breaking things in order to regain control over someone he didnt know how to deal with.
i think people are overreacting to a degree but i can see how Sam might look like a bit of a fragile narcissist here. i just watched bits of Nick Mullen on the show and he seemed able to roll with the punches and they got along and talked about some real things. for Sam, though, i feel like if he catches any notion that hes being fucked with, he tries to one up the person (which is funny given his puppet master comments) and it just spirals the whole thing into a mess. he needs to feel like hes the "big man" in the room and not the butt of the joke.
also, it appears Harland is hearting comments that are hating on Sam so it appears he was not happy with Sam fucking his shit up and this isnt some big wholesome bit where they both walked away liking each other... awkwarrrrd.
