I think in actuality, independent of Sam Hyde or anything, there's a distinct notion that these older comedians who are completely washed and just do stupid 10 minute bits at the laugh factory and host their old man podcasts don't want to accept anything underneath them, so they're just going to sandbag anyone edgier than they were.

I’ve watched Sam and the wigger crew on the Harland Highway Podcast five times now. I’m not entirely sure why I find it so goddamned compelling, but I do. There are subtle cues from Sam and Harland regarding their intentions right from the start.

From Sam’s failed gambit of placing the shitskin wigger behind Harland to “surround” him, to the moment when Sam asks, “Are you making fun of me, you bitch?” and Harland replies, “I am. I love making fun of you.” That’s the closest we get to open hostility before the table flip and the failed manhandling attempt, and it happens early on.

The forced laughter from Sam and the crew whenever Damiel says “war daddy” is just beautiful and awful.

Harland picks up on Damiel signaling to the wiggers, and chooses to press him until he’s thoroughly humiliated. You can see Nick, shoulder shrug and embarrassed smile, giving a quiet “Come on, Damiel.” It’s perfect.

There are so many small, unspoken things going on that make it fascinating. If you watch closely during the part where Harland asks Sam if he likes nature, you can see Sam already testing the weight of the table, as if he’s decided that the only card left in his playbook is some fishtank-esque set destruction as a form of intimidation. And that's before "gorilla nest" is ever mentioned.

By the end, Sam looks like a big, unfunny gorilla with a bruised ego, Nick looks distressed and humiliated, and the rest of the crew just come off as low iq humorless lackeys.

There is definitely a tiered system at play, but apart from that, the theme of splitting sam hyde from the rest, or perhaps just nick, strikes me as similar to.. you know when you watch bodycam footage of someone with a personality disorder getting arrested and they are definitely inevitably caught, but to retain some semblance of power they start trying to draw distinctions between the cops.
