I think with most HR departments they will only confirm the dates of employment, especially if it’s a bigger company. His bigger challenge is explaining the three year and growing gap in employment. After 6-9 months it gets very difficult for your resume to be even considered, outside of a very good explanation for the gap (like taking care of a family member, leaving because of children, etc.).For all that the most likely explanation is still that he's lying, I can see him getting skunked at every turn trying to find a new job if they all call his previous employer and hear, "No, would not hire again."
If he was really smart he could say it was health related issues but he also took the time to study or develop some skills and be able to demonstrate them. But it’s much easier to whine about rent and then drink bourbon once your paypigs deliver.
