Inner Circle request or not, this is a topic that could wield a lot of possibilities for new lolcows to be found. The history of Satanism itself is lulzworthy in itself and I want to start out by going over the basics of the religion and talking about Anton LaVey's involvement.

The Church of Satan's website has some basic starting information about where the hell this religion came from and what it's supposed to be about:

The Church of Satan was created by our late High Priest, Magus Anton Szandor LaVey on Walpurgisnacht 1966 c.e. (common era). He declared 1966 as Year One, Anno Satanas. Since that date, the Church of Satan and Anton LaVey have become household name, at times through mis-informed or outright libelous claims, but often through respect and admiration from those who have come to admire his rational philosophy.

Our members champion personal development and rejection of herd conformity, and thus each Satanist finds his own unique path to self-deification.

Dispite our long, successful, and well documented history, there are often questions and confusion spurred by misinformtion. Let these pages educate you on the facts.

:story:

Already I've come across some salt right from the church's own web page. I'm already seeing a ton of potential already, but let's go through some of this nonsense further.

Some excerpts from their Anton LaVey bio:

Anton Szandor LaVey (1930—1997) was the founder of the Church of Satan, the first organized church in modern times promulgating a religious philosophy championing Satan as the symbol of personal freedom and individualism. Unlike the founders of other religions, who claimed exalted “inspiration” delivered through some supernatural entity, LaVey readily acknowledged that he used his own faculties to synthesize Satanism, based on his understanding of the human animal and insights gained from earlier philosophers who advocated materialism and individualism. Concerning his role as founder, he said that, “If he didn’t do it himself, someone else, perhaps less qualified, would have.”

His odd interests marked him as an outsider, and he did not alleviate this by feeling any compulsion to be “one of the boys.” He despised gym class and team sports and often cut classes to follow his own interests. He was an avid reader, and watched films such as those which would later be labeled film noir as well as German expressionist cinema such as M,The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and the Dr. Mabuse movies. His flashy mode of dress also served to amplify his alienation from the mainstream. He dropped out of high school to hang around with hoodlum types and gravitated towards working in the circus and carnivals, first as a roustabout and cage boy and later as a musician. His curiosity was rewarded through “learning the ropes” and working an act with the big cats, and later assisting with the machinations of the spook shows. He became well-versed in the many rackets used to separate the rubes from their money, along with the psychology that lead people to such pursuits. He played music for the bawdy shows on Saturday nights, as well as for tent revivalists on Sunday mornings, seeing many of the same people attending both. All of this provided a firm, earthy background for his evolving cynical world view.

I think those excerpts alone give you an idea of how much of a real life lolcow Anton LaVey himself was. Now that's out of the way, I want to go through a few of the Satanist web forums that are out there and what kinds of content you will find.

The 600 Club was one of the first ones that I came across. Their web forum looks like this and even they have a thread pointing out how much of a fraud Anton LaVey was.

Here they are talking about some forum i've never heard of without realizing how lulzy they are in themselves.

They have some pretty uptight rules over there:

More of how retarded they can be with their no fun policy:

There's some more interesting content over on that one forum alone, like here:

The Danger of Satanic Forums

Recently, a trollish attention seeker behind the so-called “Church of Leviathan” created a new forum for Theistic Satanists, claiming to offer an alternative to the established atheistic-orientated Satanic International Network. My personal experience of the Church of Leviathan run by a self-styled “pope” called Robert Fraize is a character involved in extensive campaigns of intimidation and slander against various Satanists, most recently against Lucien Greaves and the Satanic Temple. I made a comment once upon the Church of Leviathan blog and the site owner amended the wording to say things I did not say, thus the individual Satanist in the light of what I have written might be correct in thinking this site is best avoided for personal security.

The problem of Satanic International Network

Satanic International Network is also a problematic forum, with the forum owner Zachary Schroeder aka Zack Black making unwise choices of administrators who abused their positions to hack, delete and steal personal information on the site. Zack Black has also on occasion abused and published personal information provided to him on his site inviting others to harass those he had problems with.

Satanist loses job thanks to 600Club forum

The long-established Satanic forum 600Club in its history suffered problems with a rogue administrator who used personal information on the site to harass individuals, which allegedly caused one victim to lose their job.

I found this old archived usenet FAQ for satanism

Also this autistic website
http://www.dpjs.co.uk/

There is a really edgy group called the order of nine angles (not angels) that claims to perform human sacrifice and are supportive of radical islam for the purpose of destroying the west

I'm not sure whether this website would be called satanic but it definitely is autistic

You need to address Crowley, though.

He is one of those wonderful personalities who straddle the line between master troll and lolcow.
Yeah I'm going to add info about him to the OP. He is quite a character himself and I was focusing more on getting the info out about these forums and the infighting going on. I love it when conspiracy guys try to use that excuse that because so and so celebrity was inspired by Aleister Crowley and that there's Satanic symbols in their music or whatever they do for a living that they have to be part of some elusive Illuninati or New World Order group that doesn't exist.

These guys are very interesting. They seem opposed to the Wiccan ideology, but also have a philosophy that appeals to lolcows. A lot of them encourage a very destructive and cruel lifestyle, whereas the Wiccans believe in harming none.
I'll be damned if it doesn't make for good metal, though.

Holy shit there's a ton of information on this Church of Leviathan.

I just found this site and the tumblr blog of this thing:

It was founded by Robert Fraize. I'll look into this name some more and see what I find.

There's a picture of him here.

Intro to Satanism. Uh, NSFW. Not the whole site, just the home picture.

I tried looking for stuff for Levey's daughters Karla and Zeena, but there wasn't much.

Moonchild was a pretty great WWI self-insert fic with Crowley and his pals as wizards. Modern Thelemites lack the appropriately amusing levels of crazy that made him so great.

I hesitate to call Satanists lolcows, because it can be hard for a Christian to approach the topic completely unbiased (and in the mood for a good laugh). I would, however, be very interested to see what the Kiwi Farms at large thinks of all this.

Mostly I wonder: if they're worried about being "outed" as Satanists, why not change the name of their affiliation? Isn't "Satan" just derived from "Shaitan," anyway? Specifically calling yourself something that derives from the notion of the deceiver, the adversary, etc., isn't good for publicity, and it explains a lot of the negative reactions. Plus, calling the central figure of their philosophy by the nasty name pinned on him by his enemies smacks of playing by the Christians' rules, doesn't it? Call themselves The Church of the Free Angel or something, and there'd be a lot less controversy for them to worry about.

Or is it that I'm missing the point, and controversy is what they want?
