Do carts require a coin to release them from latches on the corral in the US? They do where I'm from and it's seen as noble to not return your cart as it can then be taken by someone who may not have any change. my country has superceded the need for a cart narc - to take out a shopping trolley, you need to insert a $2 coin to release it from a clip. returning the trolley and attaching the clip gives you your coin back.

cart narc could make a fortune over here by returning the trolleys which people are too lazy to put back and retrieve their coin.

Same where I live but one of the other main reasons was to stop local teens from stealing them to do Jaskass stunts with them and dumping them in the local rivers.

The majority of the times carts aren't returned its because there is a lack of a near-by cart return in the parkinglot.
That is because of the stores being cheap bastards and trying to push more labor and time cost onto the customer.
I will not participate in that slippery slope, that's how we got self-checkout.

What makes it worse is there are many places that don't have the belt or electric device that allows you to grab dozens of carts at once.

Also not all stores hire tards specifically to get all the carts. Yes, Wegman's does, but otherwise it's usually the janny's job in my experience, which is why I mentioned how when you're getting the carts, you'll also be yelled at to clean the bathrooms. Can't be in two places at a time, but when you don't have the belt or motorized whats-it, then there's not a hell of a lot you can do.

In other words, not being able to put them away is sometimes an infrastructure and hierarchy issue. If they're too fucking cheap to get a belt for the carts, that's not really the end user's fault but I didn't really like being pulled away from cleaning the bathrooms to get all the carts in the lot. I don't shit my pants at the people who do it because they're not the ones blowing smoke up my ass about it.
