Living in the rockies I always wonder how some places that never get snow even deal with it. People here where I live poke fun at the states that can't deal with an inch of snow when that's nothing for us, but our towns are built around it (sometimes). Good luck, kiwis.
If you saw anything at all from the big winter storm that hit Texas in 2021, the answer is: They don't, and then catastrophic infrastructure failure happens, power companies shit their pants, perform some very significant fuck-ups, and then even more of the grid goes down because of their fuckups (hello "rolling blackouts" that turn into just straight up outages during critical hours of the event, I distinctly remember that happening to a few counties that had no problems at all until the electricity providers just decided "Yeah, we're just gonna shut things off for a few hours. We'll totally bring it back up. Oh shit, we can't bring it back up.").

Same for us from the parts of the Great Lakes that get lake effect snow. Extra fun because not too far away in the same metro you have areas that don't get much snow unless it's a system from the west and they get into lake effect and drive like idiots

kansas isnt doing well
I'm keeping an eye on things because I have family in eastern Kansas. Interstate 70 is closed in like 5 different sections between Kansas City and Ellsworth. US 40 is closed between Lawrence and Topeka. Kansas 10 is closed between US 59 and De Soto. KDOT got their ass kicked. If the busy roads aren't completely black ice, the bridges are sure are.

It hasn't even started snowing yet. After cycling through the entire range from rain to sleet, the bridges and then the roads flash froze when the sun went down. There's black ice everywhere. I don't know how much pretreatment KDOT did, but I clearly wasn't enough.
It's the same story over and over again. Despite receiving days of advance warning people still decide to challenge mother nature anyways.
The NWS was adamant the freezing rain would stay stay south of I-70. and really south of US 56. That did not happen.

If you have room in your freezer put a jar of water in your freezer and once the water is frozen put something on top of the ice. If you loose power you can tell if you need to throw your food out by how far the penny or whatever is. Use tape or something to mark where the water was so you know how to judge. If it's up at the top the food is good, but if it's lower than a third, double check your meat, etc. Stay Warm frens.

Glad that the fucking ice part of this thing is missing me for once, there's nothing 'wintery' worse than a fucking ice storm. You're basically guaranteed a multi-day outage event in that situation, exacerbated because the snow/ice makes it so linemen can't really do shit about it until the state/county gets its thumb out of its ass and starts plowing/salting roads. Hopefully most people in that area have an alternative heating method. Wood or kerosene or electric heaters w/ a generator.

For Dixiebros who aren't used to temps this cold, you probably don't have heat tape [because you'd basically never use it] so leave your taps running at a trickle for the duration of cold temps, it will help keep your pipes from freezing. Been there, sucks to have to melt down snow from the yard to flush the shitter. If they burst as a result of freezing you're likely looking at four or five figures in repair/remediation of water damage.

But yeah I'll take multiple feet of snow over any ice, fuck that shit. Had one Christmas where we didn't have power for almost a week because of an ice storm, had to heat the house with the gas oven and our pipes froze due to no power. Half of the state was shut down for several days, it was a rough one.

I'm glad I moved to Florida, the worse we're going to get is is high temps in the mid 50F's. There was one winter a few years ago here it was in the 80F's the whole time. I went to the beach in February.

Along with the blizzard we have a tornado watch for AR, LA, and TX with a tornado warning currently in north central LA

Thats how that played out in my head
If I saw a toilet like that, I'd just shit on a street saar.

Ah yes, the land of endless hurricanes, humidity, mosquitos, and worst of all, cubans. Much better. At least a snow storm doesn't generally take out your house and everything around it. Can you make a hurricane ball and toss it at your friends in winter? Why I think not.

I hope I get a little bit of snow. I'm well north of the main threat but I'd like to see a little bit :)
Hope everyone else stays safe.

I went out for a walk earlier right before the icing started. We already have about 4 inches of snow on the ground, then the ice started coming so heavy I had to get inside. Maybe five minutes of walking and I already had a slight ice shell on my hat. Was neat listening to it hit the brim.

Our icing just started here, but not as bad. Our snow kept up until about an hour ago; weather service still says no more than 5” today, but we’ve got 7” where I’m at.

Still no loss of power, but I’m sure that’s coming later tonight. They’re still calling nearly an inch of ice for us.

I’ll be grilling steaks in an hour or two in the ice. Sam Adam’s Cold Snap is a great companion for this weather.

Edit: Just stepped outside and we already have a glazing of ice. We are fucked lmao.

Shit man... hang tight! Keep us updated. I'm also grilling steaks tonight because ain't no damn ice gonna keep me from my carnivorous vices. My trees are bending already and it ain't stopping any time soon. We'll get through it.

Update on the thunderstorms: A tornado was reported on the ground in Arkansas. Storm report says video from a firefighter and a debris signature. Other than that, nothing super exciting.
