If you saw anything at all from the big winter storm that hit Texas in 2021, the answer is: They don't, and then catastrophic infrastructure failure happens, power companies shit their pants, perform some very significant fuck-ups, and then even more of the grid goes down because of their fuckups (hello "rolling blackouts" that turn into just straight up outages during critical hours of the event, I distinctly remember that happening to a few counties that had no problems at all until the electricity providers just decided "Yeah, we're just gonna shut things off for a few hours. We'll totally bring it back up. Oh shit, we can't bring it back up.").Living in the rockies I always wonder how some places that never get snow even deal with it. People here where I live poke fun at the states that can't deal with an inch of snow when that's nothing for us, but our towns are built around it (sometimes). Good luck, kiwis.
