The one piece of credit I'll give Ian and the AH Jannies is that they're at least somewhat consistent in banning people who call for violence.
Also, I'm going to add my own gripe here. Why is the ASB subforum so fucking clogged with garbage? It's literally a subforum where basically anything goes, and 99% of it is ISOT or SI garbage. I'm genuinely surprised at how few people are writing something along the lines of Turtledove's Crosstime Traffic or Race series considering how influential the guy is on AH. Instead it's just ISOT and SI as far as the eye can see, with the sprinkling of a few sub-standard stories in between. Reach for the Skies is the best story on the subforum, and is peak disappointment in my eyes. A brilliant idea that's let down by the author adding in the same "strong woman" archetype that really drags down the story IMO.

Another issue with the ISOTs is how often they just devolve into progressive circlejerk about how good and moral and superior future people are which have made any ISOTs of modern day or even post 2010 areas to the past complete and total crapshoots.

Most of the ISOT stories that I've read don't involve progressive politics, but instead involve a nation being transferred to another world and having to fight the existing powers of said world. 99.9% of them go the same way, modern nation is sent to another world, encounters generic evil empire #63444583, fight generic evil empire #63444583 and win.
There may be plenty of action and combat, but it's a forgone conclusion as you already can tell how each battle ends. Anything the antagonist nation does is instantly countered and the battle quickly becomes a one sided victory in favor of the modern nation, which almost always takes zero casualties. You can't even make the antagonists be smart, they have to be as cartoonishly over the top evil and incompetent as possible.
It's even worse when it's done as a method to get people to join the military of the transferred nation, just look at GATE, the author intended for it to be a recruiting tool for the JSDF.
Now I could keep sperging about how much I dislike most ISOT stories but I think you can get the idea. Honestly i'm not even Mad at the Internet, i'm Disappointed at the Internet. The concept of a relatively advanced nation being transferred to another world where it has to find footing against internal and external threats sounds like a neat idea, sadly it get's wasted on absolutely mediocre stories like GATE and Nihonkoku Shoukan.

You have read some of the less political ISOTs. The ones I am talking about are the type that has become more common on AH and similar.
1632 is one of the gold standards for ISOTs especially because it tries and avoid that. They straight up spell it on the book: We can crack any army in the world at the moment, but we will run out of supplies and be conquered if we try doing that. It works out because Grantville gears down and makes peace with the local Empire to survive and thrive.
The ones I am talking about are more like A Golden Island to the West. I mentioned it back a few pages ago, it has become THE trend setter for garbage ISOTs that are simple circlejerks.

And not only that, but the Europeans DO NOT just automatically adopt all American thinking. Some of it they do, some of it they adopt through the Committees of Correspondence spreading, but uptime thought morphs as it interacts with early modern people. And the pool of uptimers is so tiny, they can't keep control of their own United States of Europe as it expands, not even 1% of the population.
1632 was very thoughtfully written because Eric Flint had a deep amount of respect for both the United States (despite, or perhaps because of, being an old school labor union socialist) and the early modern world, and by making it into a shared universe he stopped himself from dominating it with one view. Characters like Admiral Simpson (muh conservative military man) became a lot deeper because other authors were able to add different perspective on them. It is a unique masterpiece of worldbuilding.

General rule of thumb: if you want something well done, do it yourself. The problem here lies not so much with that, but the way ah.com has been mismanaged the past at least 7 years. Doing well means controversy and that'll lead to Coventry, one way or another.

The easiest way is just keeping the "no current politics rule" and not having a place for discussing current politics. You'd avert like 90% of the grief and be able to attract people across the political spectrum (although you'd have to ban pro-tankie/pro-Nazi shit too I suppose). Half of my posts on this site would get me a kick at minimum if I posted it in Political Chat there but I don't get banned since I stay out of there (except occasionally to screencap the stupid shit there).
