It's a hellhole with abusive staff and patients who may have a little "behavior" time to time. One of the fat male nurses made an abusive comment to me for no reason. My allocated psychiatrist/consultant was horrible with no interest other than getting me on as much medication as she could.

But the food is the best part.

Breakfast 08:00, t'was a few years ago so I can't remember exactly but you got a bowl of cereal and a croissant with fruit juice. I think there was something else too.

12:30 For lunch and dinner you could choose two courses- main plus either a starter or dessert (but not both). After each meal you got a menu with a few options for your next meal to choose from. The quality and quantity was good, and it was cooked in a kitchen, so it was an actual cooked meal and not a ready meal heated up.

20:30 Some buttered bread or cake were put out as a snack.

Tea and instant coffee are available to help yourself with.

Plus you were free to bring your own snacks etc.

The best part? They have extras plus there's always a patient who doesn't eat their meal, so if you want extra just ask and the staff will be happy to give you any spares going.

In summary, the staff don't give a fuck and it's very medication-focused but you will eat better in there than you will "on the outside".

I remember getting a lot of turkey burgers with bacon in the looney bin. Also I was in there with a bunch of good looking crazy bitches who were actually very nice. My favorite was this half black girl who would rub my dick during group therapy. She was pretty funny too.

They're just glorified pill dispensers. If you want actual actual help you need to see a therapist. Unless your problem is something that only pills can help with like schizophrenia in which case you probably need a psych

God the meatloaf straight up tasted like someone's mom made it and it made the cursed time go by so much faster. Even got fried chicken if we wanted it. I'm with you, the only things worth missing were the forced therapy sessions and the food. Although they had a lot of books identifying local wildlife too so that really made things better too.

100%

Any patient I spoke to or overheard I couldn't help noticing we were all being prescribed the same fucking thing. I am wondering if there's some sort of deal these services have with the drug companies where they are given incentives to prescribe certain drugs.

I'm not even schizophrenic I just sent a stupid email. High amounts of the drugs they want to prescribe would be very detrimental to someone who doesn't need it. Nasty stuff.

There were no group sessions like you see in One Flew over the Cuckoo Nest. Just a once a week appointment with your consultant where they pester you to take meds.

Once a day you got your blood pressure taken by your named nurse, who were also meant to have a 1:1 chat with you (some did, depends on the person).

Other than that, not much to do in there. Use the internet on your phone (yes, free wi-fi for patients), play scrabble with the nurse assistants or socialise with the patients. Aside from one wannabe hard guy the patients were all a decent bunch. It's basically what you would expect, you've got the guy who walks around talking to himself, the bipolar old woman who is super-friendly one day and psycho the next, the stoners and an unstable self-harmer who sadly ends up being taken out on a stretcher.

When a mental institution is doing a good job, it should basically feel like being on vacation. Just let you chill the fuck out, take drugs, and focus on trying to relax and clear out the stress and negativity from your head. Americans would be less crazy if they could take more vacations.
Modern psychiatric hospitals in America are literal shitholes unless you have the deluxe platinum health insurance that covers costs. Most of them are paid for by the State after someone goes way too cuckoo and is committed by court order.
