Some of you are being unnecessarily overprotective of the original when I haven't said anything bad about it. I hadn't experienced Silent Hill before the Remake of 2 and it was an opportunity to play it.

I wanted to play the remake first before exploring the original.

There are things I appreciate that the remake does differently with the serious, subtle tones, while there is some clear and better delivery (with occasionally surprising humour) when it comes to the original.

The remake isn't woke slop or done poorly enough to warrant such shit flinging, it deserves a chance. Both versions are great.

That's the thing most of us are baffled by. It's totally backasswards thinking. Wouldn't you rather want to experience the game that hundreds of thousands of people already have such fond memories of first? To see what makes it so important in the first place that a remake of it is such a big deal, and then check out the new version to find out whether it did the original justice?

I think it's ok. I don't expect people who want to play the remake to go back and play the original, if you are remaking it then let people experience the modernized one and if they really like it they can go back and see how it began.

Especially in such a story heavy game, if you somehow aren't aware of the twist then it's going to inevitably impact your playthrough of whatever version you choose to play second.

I love SH1 and it's on my top ten but if they remade it, I would just tell people to play the version they feel they'd like more, not both, unless they really want to see the difference.

Oh yeah the ending made me cry so hard when I heard how miscasted, flat and botched the delivery (and everything really...) was in the demake.

The problem with the remake is that it turns the game into an action horror, removes dream-like atmosphere and some voice acting, especially Mary's, is awful.
Angela being made less attractive - one of main points of anti-woke criticism - actually fits her character, as women in her situation do try to make themselves less attractive to avoid attracting predators.
The only improvement the remake offers is the fact that it allows you to explore the town a little more.

From the games I've played with tank controls thus far (including the Silent Hill games ofc) I've had no issue with them. It's something you have to get used to; they're a bit clunky a first, but you'll get used to them in no time as long as you get your head out of your analog over-the-shoulder thirdperson ass. Also, people seem to forget that games like SH2 use tank controls on purpose to add to the survival horror aspect of them, not because they're "old" or technologically limited.

Tank controls really are the gaming equivalent of kryptonite for normies, huh?

Tank controls were the default in the 90s: Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, Grim Fandango, even Croc (a proper early 3D platformer with precise timing and jumping) utilized tank controls.
But I guess it's difficult to learn for people who weren't gaming back then.

Tank controls are difficult for everyone to learn. You just had a reason to lean them in the 90s because they were so prevalent. In 2024 you only encounter them if you're a fairly narrow window of retro gaming to "why am I deal with this shit" isn't nearly as clear.

I sympathise with anyone who played the remake first, because a lot of what bothers me about the remake is made worse by comparisons to the original. Remake is bloated but it's less obvious if you haven't been through the leaner original. SH2 always had its flaws and was propelled forward by the story and atmosphere. Remake does both of those well enough to be compelling, so of course new players are going to come away with a good impression - the things that SH2 excelled at were still done well.

My new complaint with the remake is the titles of tracks in the new OST. Every returning track has had new words added to its title and every one of the changes is embarrassing. Yeah, it's petty.

When was that the criticism? I mean, sure there's some coomers out there arguing in coom-fueled bad faith, and then there's the AI shitposts and possibly horny PC mods.
But the legitimate issue with Angela was not about her not being attractive, it was about them missing the point and not making her look gaunt and aged beyond her years by the trauma. She looks like a normal, if sad and a bit chubby (and with an uncanny resemblance to David Duchovny), teenager now.

The attractiveness complaints were about Maria, who for plot reasons is supposed to be the ideal woman of James' sexual desires, a hot, sexualized version of Mary. Even her clothes were a reflection of Mary's. Remake Maria tones all of it down and, again, misses the point.

Her design was intentional and I still get pissed when people miss the point. There’s a clear disconnect between her voice and her face. She sounds like a socially awkward teenager, but looks like a somewhat aged mother. It’s supposed to convey that she’s had a fucked up past but “ah well she looks more her age dood!”
