Silent Hill

I've said it before in this thread (and for those in the back just in case they forgot - I don't need any remakes and am not asking for any either) but SH1 would have been the easiest one to remake first because it's straight forward compared to SH2, narratively at least, with less opportunities to fuck up very subtle things that were doing way more heavy lifting than Poles are capable of understanding..

We'll see what they do but if they can fucking tone down the insane amount of combat they threw into SH2remake it could be okay but I am not holding out much hope because everyone kissed their ass for it.

To put an end to your uncertainty on whether to buy SHf,
I will present just one screengrab and maybe some monster designs.

Be honest with yourself. Does this scream SILENT HILL in the way you'd want it to?

Or does it instead scream overly indulgent J-horror bullshit we've all seen before with no real shred of unique psych horror identity the series has become known for? (for 1-4 at least)
KNIVES. COMBAT. Get the fuck out of here. Lisa from PT is a way better Japanese horror and folklore influenced design with an interesting backstory as a ghost.View attachment 7491179

I have unironically taken shits that resemble proper SILENT HILL enemies more than whatever the fuck they were thinking here. Some western entry games have better designs. And it isn't just because Masahiro Ito isn't designing them. 4 handled the creature designs very well without him.
Is it surprising for anyone that read Ryu07 previous works? The only real merit to the spinoff is having a high likelihood of some absolutely fucked up shit happen to the main characters.

What remains of the Silent Hill IP is no longer anything more than that AI clickbait slop I posted on 126 (being only about a step removed from Ascension), and the cynical cash grab of remaking the Team Silent entries purely because Redditors who are too young to have ever played them (but who pretend that nostalgia for them is a personality) will buy and religiously defend their updoot investment as the "definitive" version.

Every criticism made about Bloober's SH2R deliberately sacrificing qualities unique to the original for the sake of making the product a more generically "modern" video game (including padding the story with additional fluff so Twitch streamers can't complete it in one session) will be taken to more egregious lengths in whatever Taco Bell bullshit they manage to turn the first game into, purely because there's less performative reverence for the original than there was for 2. And we know damned well they're only remaking 1 so they can release 3; so I'm expecting RE3 Remake levels of phoning in a stepping stone title.

That first Silent Hill is PSX through and through, and Bloober isn't going to lean into any of it the way a Puppet Combo game would. So it's a safe bet that we're going to get the 2 Remake engine (with all the same bugs and gameplay mechanics retained) and all the trappings of 1 and 3 built from as many assets copy-pasted from 2 as possible, starting with the town. I'm fully expecting the environments in the 3 remake which don't take place in Silent Hill to be full of Silent Hill assets, and trans flag avatars on Reddit and gameFAGS to cope that it's "no different" from Team Silent recycling the models for the Closers and Angela's corpse from 2.

To reiterate a specific dealbreaker alluded to above (and which has been clear since the first teaser footage of the 2 remake was shown): Despite being a fan who had owned and played the original games, the remakes clearly aren't intended for me - the product is intended for younger people pretending to be fans of the originals and the Silent Hill a e s t h e t i c. So I try to remember to qualify my impressions of the product(s) with respect to that. At no point was I tempted to purchase whatever number Playstation we're up to for the sake of playing the Silent Hill 2 remake - My original disc is on a shelf with my other games when I want to revisit it, and I never have the urge to revisit an inferior, less-nourishing, counterfeit facsimile of it. Bloober Silent Hill may as well have MADE FROM PLANTS printed on the box.

When Square remade FF7, or Capcom remade Resident Evil 2, they were clearly intended to appeal to fans who considered the original to be their favorite game. Though I prefer the original RE2, the remake manages to strike a balance of being enough of a love letter to the original that I can enjoy replaying it, in spite of its flaws and (IMO) failure to incorporate the Scenario A/B mechanics as well as the original did. Nonetheless, there is a degree of earnestness which manages to come through enough to make it a successful nostalgia product. Though those other franchise remakes are unnecessary, I don't associate them with embarrassment to the degree I do the Silent Hill entries dating all the way back to Homecoming, and their ridiculous, creatively bankrupt fucking attempts to recreate 2 by pretending that the town exists to be a crucible for peoples' sins.

In Konami's case, Bloober blatantly projects an attitude of their remakes "fixing" the originals for the sake of making a name for themselves, with Konami's only priority being that the product looks and feels sufficiently Current Year to convince shareholders it will sell. Meanwhile, every other Silent Hill-branded release over the last twenty years has consistently been a turd too large to sweep under the rug.

Thought they looked similar when that cast was revealed. Now they are making first one. Well, failing forward as usual.

One thing I would like to see in a Silent Hill game is the monsters starting to mutate or change depending on your actions in the game, as if the town or the monsters themselves have started to learn or adapt to you and have started to change their tactics.

If Silent Hill is supposed to be a place that can analyze people's minds, then perhaps it should also respond to things that it views as becoming more of a threat to it or the creations makes.

That was what they sort of did with Shattered Memories, but was rather limited and never really explored too deeply. They still behaved the same way, and it was a game with no combat, just run and hide.

Shattered Memories was the video game version of edging. I kept waiting for it to become the remake it clearly wasn’t. Also, replacing the free roaming of the original with, umm... well, they hyped up the monsters changing based on your behavior, but either that was PR fluff or so subtle it may as well not exist.

It might’ve worked better in a different town like in Ashfield, say. Putting it in Silent Hill 1 just made me want to play Silent Hill 1.

“Let me give my gun to this stranger because it's foggy out" - Cybil the police officer
It was a spare gun, right? It's shown later on she has one of her own later, and she clearly knew there was fucked up stuff going on in the town.

Speaking of Cybil and guns, the movie version of her firing off her gun and letting the cultists know that she was out of ammo was one of the most retarded decisions ever.

What I'm getting from this is the girl has an amputation fetish or phobia and a doll fetish or phobia. Good job fucking up the abstract monster design, they're supposed to be distorted figures based on humans, not just distorted humans.
Clearly she's just played the new DOOM and thinks it's shit.
Well, I can't think of a better explanation for Cacodemon's sudden cameo.

Hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling they're going to fuck up Lisa's mutation somehow.
They will. They fucked all emotional moments in 2. Every single one they dropped the ball on despite having the detail down. They need better cinematics devs.

What a autistic general this is lol.
Fuck off tourist.
