Silent Hill

I've never been much of a survival horror fan. I remember as a kid watching my brother play Re2 and 3 and being interested. I also watched him play silent hill 2 and 4. I don't think I ever really played them, I think I played a little of 4.
Anyway what do you guys think needs to be in the new silent hill for it to be a successful survival horror game. Tank Controls? Fixed Camera angles? Low resources? The ability to fight or not? What really creates that survival horror feel?

  • Fleshed-out characters
  • Creative, symbolic monsters
  • Multiple endings
  • Atmospheric surroundings
  • A haunting soundtrack
Those are what made the first four games so unforgettable.

Oh, and they're gonna need fog. Lots of fog.

Basically, this.

"Classic" tank controls and fix cameras aren't going to bring Silent Hill back to its former glory. Hell, the first time I played I turned that shit off immediately.

But yes, what RAEL said.

All survival horror games need the following:
  • Atmosphere
  • Resource management
  • Limited capacity to fight back
  • Atmosphere
  • Atmosphere
  • Atmosphere
If you get those right then even a story is unnecessary, just look at Five Nights at Freddys.

Or hell, Slender (despite becoming massively overhyped, imitated, and faddy) epitomizes "atmosphere+defencelessness=SHITURPANTSSCARY" without any story.

The demo looks pretty darn scary (Silent Hill hasn't been scary since 4) but I do hope they don't rely on jump-scares. I'm not particularly thrilled with the protagonist though. In fact, quite a lot of the protagonists have been pretty boring and most of their stories rehash Silent Hill 2.

There's so much drama in the Silent Hill fanbase. There are the people who prefer the first 4 games (myself included) and then there are the people who overreact whenever someone says the old games are the best. Like, they try SO hard to show that they're a 'casual' non-fanboy that they even say that the newer games are absolutely perfect and improve on the old games. Of course, there are indeed people who genuinely prefer the newer games and that's absolutely fine as long as they don't chimp out at the fans of the old games.

I remember Twin Perfect did a video-series called "The Real Silent Hill Experience" where they explain what Silent Hill really is about using evidence from the first 3 games and the original developers while critiquing the problems of the newer games (I don't agree with all of their points but for the most part, it was quite informative). They received a huge backlash from the SH community and some people called even them 'scum of the earth' (to be fair, they do come across a bit snooty but they do it for laughs).

You mean you don't agree that Silent Hill Book of Memories is a great game that's destined to become a classic that stands the test of time? :(

*puts "The Real Silent Hill Experience" on the list of stuff to watch*

What it also needs is symbolic puzzles, the prison in SH2 is a pretty good example. But nothing too difficult to the point of moon logic.

A big part of Silent Hill for me is it's surrealist and allegorical design.

Like at the very start of SH2 when you go to Neely's Bar, scrawled on the window is "There was a HOLE here. It's gone now."

This could apply to numerous parts in the game. Such as how Mary is not in James's life anymore and is thus a HOLE in his life. Or being a literal reference to the holes James has to jump into later in Toluca prison. (Which is again another allegory in of itself). However what is more disturbing is after the hospital, if you go back to Neely's bar the first message is replaced with a new one that reads.

Silent Hill needs stuff like that. Really surreal shit that most horror games don't touch. The first 4 games more or less consistently have this dream-like quality where the world seems to adapt and form around the thoughts and events of the characters. Where things aren't usually literal and the plot itself is fairly simple compared to what is implied in the more subtle bits of it's design.

I really liked the silent hills trailer/demo/whatever plus, Norman Reedus :heart-full:. I think its a good thing for the series to distance themselves from the most common tropes of the "good" games (silent hill 1-3), like pyramid head or the nurses. Dont try to catch lightning in a bottle, they tried it time and again after 3 and it never really worked. Either take the series to a new direction or just stop and make something completely new, youre only tarnishing the legacy of the franchise (Looking at you Final Fantasy)

It's cool that Norman Reedus will be in it, and Kojima's games are always great, but...

Will there EVER be another female protagonist in the series after Heather?

I recently platinumed Silent Hill 3, actually, even in spite of the random freezes on PS3. Suffice to say, it was way better on PS2. Still, easiest game I've ever platinumed.

You and I both know how Heather was received by the "hardcore" SH fans - they hate her, she's too flippant, she's 17, blah blah blah - which quite honestly makes me want a new female protagonist all the more, as long as it's not an older female mother figure ie. the movie. I'd like a young woman in her twenties maybe.

Don't you just laugh and laugh over how much they must be pissing their pants about the involvement of Kojima and how PT made Silent Hill too mainstream and all the inevitable crying over all the new fans and the collective pants shitting when they don't all immediately grasp the super complex Silent Hill mythology?

Those poor new SH fans will innocently stumble across the viper pits that are Silent Hill "fan" communities, asking 'So what's the deal with Alessa? Is she evil?' and be hit with the hatred of a thousand suns when they scream back 'ALESSA WAS NEVER EVIL, THE MOVIE ISN'T CANON AND DAHLIA WAS LYING THE WHOLE TIME YOU SHITLORD'.

As for me, I am totally looking forward to both the game and the shittstorm brewing in the fan communities. Kojima is a master at trolling DSP and now he's unwittingly trolling entire Silent Hill fan communities. God bless him.

Was she received badly? I always thought she was popular among horror fans...As for "hardcore" fandom, never bothered with that shit. Resident Evil's was bad enough at one time.

I'm glad Kojima is involved. Now I just have to figure out how to get a PS4...

I know people generally hated SH5(can't blame them). I tried it and it was just so much wat(not to mention the PC version went drama queen on me, so I just outright gave up on it at that point). 2 was pretty cerebral, 3 was interesting because it was a different character, 4, made no sense and was confusing. The demo for P.T. is pretty interesting. Kojima is getting a 2 way troll, scare people with the promise of a new SH game, while at the same time not really saying anything new about MGSV. The kojima express has no brakes. I personally enjoyed the original SH. The very beginning of the game, and those zombie babies. Just your run of the mill every-man with a handgun and a steak knife versus hell.

So iam currently playing sh1 on epsxe but however there is a problem wherein reaching the balkan church results in the game frezeeing the moment the cutscene in which you enter the area ends any help please
