Silent Hill

Of all the merch that could have been made, does anyone know why Konami chose to put out a Silent Hill 2 skateboard?

I think early 00s video game merch was so much cooler.

I can accept that Silent Hill is dead, but shit like this is like pouring salt on the wound
I'm currently playing Visage which is supposed to be like a spiritual successor to P.T. I'm not very far in but it definitely lacks characters that I really care about.
Silent Hill 2 and 3 are more than just scary games. You really end up attached to the characters. I think that's another thing that truly separates SH from other survival horror games.

I said it before, and i'll say it again

Silent Hill was lightning in a bottle. At best, we'll get more "inspired by SH" indies, but sadly, we will never have that first impression we got when walking through the "empty" prison cells in 2, the mirror room in 3, the hospital hall in 4, or even the first otherworld transition in 1.

I think a lot of mystique is ruined by the internet's theory obsession nowadays, whereas the first four titles left a lot to interpretation, and coming up with your explanations is part of the fun, that came at a time where only a few handful of fans bothered to go full autismo on it.

Nowadays dev pander to the theorists out there, and they acknowledge it too, which in my opinion takes away a lot of the mystery. Silent Hill's mysteries benefitted a lot from being pretty much a smaller, cult classic series nowadays

I didnt notice i was rambling until now lol

Something @Judge Dredd mentioned ( think it was in the unpopular opinions thread about silent hill 2 being overrated ) was that basically everyone wants a silent hill 2 rather than 1 or 3 also there was this one nigress on the silent hill 3 vid by eye patch wolf that said sh1 or sh3 don't exist so yeah that's your average sh2 fanboy

You summed it up perfectly. Over analyzing things just takes the fun and mystique away.

The only two I haven't finished yet are Shattered Memories and Origins. I even bought a PSP to play them. The tiny screen might be a handicap. Did you play those?

Silent Hill was lightning in a bottle.

If you boil down the first title, it's a simple yet effective trick:

Hyper-realism in the fog world. (The suburb is pixel-perfect; you can actually read the leaflets on walls.) Breakdown of reality in the Otherworld. It's about knowns becoming unknowns.

You are right in a a sense; it no longer innovates. That feeling can't be captured again. I rented SH1 when it was new. It wasn't like anything you'd seen before. The streets had Harry running for his life and looking for shelter. Indoor areas were charred and metallic; far from the fire and brimstone of Doom, yet very distinct from what RE was doing.

The series (1-3) pretty much shows that you make your own personal hell to a point.

Hence why some people see a "sunny beautiful town" of Silent Hill vs the unclear purgatory and hell of the otherworld.

Those poor new SH fans will innocently stumble across the viper pits that are Silent Hill "fan" communities, asking 'So what's the deal with Alessa? Is she evil?' and be hit with the hatred of a thousand suns when they scream back 'ALESSA WAS NEVER EVIL, THE MOVIE ISN'T CANON AND DAHLIA WAS LYING THE WHOLE TIME YOU SHITLORD'.
Video game movies get way too much leniency. If the casting is halfway decent and it looks vaguely like the game, that's enough to get you over the line.

Meanwhile, nobody acts remotely the same and Sean Bean is wandering around aimlessly because the focus group said we need more peen.

I was there when the movie was announced and Deborah Unger was cast as Dahlia. I loved her in The Game and I thought that was a really good choice. I was so young and innocent.

Unger also has a habit of switching 'off' when she knows she knows the film is trash (Highlander 3), which doesn't help matters.

Surprised you didn't mention harry mason being genderbent because the director thought that only mother's feel love for their kids which in retrospect was a pretty blatant case of sexism tbh

"What if Resident Evil was Jacob's Ladder?" is one of the best ideas for a game anyone has come up with.

What's interesting though is how "Resident Evil but with the supernatural" was such an obvious idea, but most games inspired by RE also went the "mad science" route, Silent Hill could have very easily been a more basic approach, ie Doom looking demons running around, but instead they decided to get really weird and artistic with it.

So lightning in a bottle is exactly right.

I remember when I first saw the trailer for the SH movie I was blown away, I honestly was super hyped and expecting it to be the first great video game movie, little did I know what I was really seeing was the beginning of the end for the franchise.

The RE movies are no different. As soon as developers take their cues from the film series, you can forget it.

Because gamers love being pandered to, the director spoke about playing the PlayStation games on set. When discussing the movie online, you'll see the phrase "love letter" thrown around a lot.

I wish video game movies had never been a thing, I noticed that myself that often times when it's turned into a movie, that sometimes ruins the game franchise itself.

But Resident Evil eventually got it's groove back though, but will the same happen for Silent Hill?

I'm really nervous about the rumors of a new game because it looks like it's going to be an all new western team, what I want is the return of Team Silent staff, if some other western dev brings back the franchise, the less likely the return of any original Team Silent staff will be.

SH is in a uniquely bad position.

1) It was that marriage of American characters with Japanese sensibilities, creating an uncanny valley effect. Remember that this was before anime and J-horror went mainstream. Konami started hiring shitty western devs on the cheap.

2) The original Team Silent were auteurs. Tomm was just a hired hand. Hideo Kojina and Junji Ito would've been a return to form.

3) At this point, the bad sequels outnumber the good ones.

It's also in a bad position in that so much of the original key staff have faded into obscurity and no one knows what the hell they're up to.

A key name I'd like to see return is Hiroyuki Owaku, but no one really knows what's happened to him, supposedly he still works at Konami, but doing what?
