Thing about SH2 is how subtle it is, a lot of nuances, secrets and the like were not even explored that deeply until recently, and even then, most of the shit we know is mostly left to one's imagination

I have no confidence that current day devs will approach the game like it should be

I'm not surprised, a lot of western Silent Hill fans are the exact sort of person who would make Life is Strange given the reins to Silent Hill. God, imagine the monsters we're gonna see. Giant penis creatures with frog legs and megaphone mouths calling her a cunt or a one semester lesbian. The final boss is her dad. He wouldn't let her get an eyebrow piercing back in high school so she's been traumatized ever since.

Like the fact that it was only recently discovered that James is DIRECTLY LOOKING AT YOU, THE PLAYER in SH2's intro, you're not normally supposed to see that due to the shadows over his eyes.

The fact that they would add a detail we're not even supposed to see like that is one of the many reasons why Silent Hill 2 is insanely deep and one of a kind, it gave me chills when I learned about James' eyes.

The implication seems to be that we, the player are a conscious entity James is somehow aware of, given the comment about "feels like someone is rooting around inside my head" when examining a save square for the first time.

Maybe we're not playing as James, we're playing as some entity literally controlling James, maybe the town itself, forcing James to keep moving forward no matter the danger or fear.

That metatextual element adds another layer to the already intricate web that is Silent Hill 2.

Shattered Memories is the only western developed Silent Hill worth a crap, it's stupid that Climax wasn't allowed to make another one as they were really getting somewhere and understood the series better than any other western dev who was given a crack at it.

Shattered Memories is the only western developed Silent Hill worth a crap, it's stupid that Climax wasn't allowed to make another one as they were really getting somewhere and understood the series better than any other western dev who was given a crack at it.

Shittered Memories was a bad walking simulator with a pointless twist ripped off from The Sixth Sense that I guessed an hour into playing the game.

It was still noticeably a cut above Origins, Homecoming and Downpour.

It wasn't as good as the Team Silent games of course, but Climax was really starting to get somewhere, it's another missed opportunity that they weren't tasked with making another one, third time could have really been the charm.

Yes the actual gameplay and puzzles are pretty weak sauce, but the game still manages to have a pretty spooky atmosphere at times, love stuff like walking through snowy woods at night, I also didn't manage to guess the twist and found the plot pretty compelling.

It helps a LOT though that the game is distinctly a separate continuity with the other games, that makes it much easier to judge the game on it's own merits, I like the game overall a lot despite it's flaws because it manages to not be a complete embarrassment like Homecoming and Downpour and actually managed to do some interesting things.

Don't completely agree but that's at least a fair assessment. I thought Origins was "okay" and the other two were rubbish.
