Silent Hill

Someone should mod Tomb Raider (PS1) so it doesn't control like ass, I really wanna play it.

I don't think he should be treated be the final gatekeeper on the lore of that game since he only designed creatures and provided some insight, but there is some diehard video analysis out there that is good for bringing people up to speed about things that were overlooked in the game. But many explanations he's given over the years never felt like he made it up just to get attention and always felt like a "natural" explanation to the subtext about the designs.

I've gone through the game several times and there was some implication things I never put together on my own without some additional information. Like you find the Seductress tablet in the shower, which is emblematic of Angela. But the thing I didn't get was that it was in the shower. Typically what rape victims want to do immediately.

But that said. Communities now are retarded and toxic in regards to interpretations to characters, motivations, orientation etc. Like if you ever went on Twitter for Metal Gear, they want to make them just gay games.

I do appreciate things that he specifically built subtext to he won't always outright describe. What Pyramid Head looks like underneath, the red squares on the nurses mouths and the final nine square save point for example. He gives hints but won't explicitly give you an answer.

The biggest reason I love that game over so many of the genre, since it allows for your own interpretations and even encourages it since much of it does have accepted explanations across the fandom, it's still presented as open ended so there isn't necessarily a right or wrong answer most of the time. The entirety of the subplots are pieced together through files, keyitems, presentation and it's on the player to weave the real story.

The only thing I didn’t get that he said was that Pyramid Head wasn’t doing something sexual to the mannequin. Did I miss something, or was that not understood to be what was happening for years?

That being said, I agree, it is hilarious. The pretentious “I knew it all along” tweeters piling on are icing.

It's very vague what he was doing with the mannequins in his introduction but he's clearly fucking one of them before the first boss fight.

It being nebulous was a part of the mystique, but I think the goal from the start was to at least "drive" your understanding of the scene into the sexual and violent. Sato understood subtlety better than most on the old team, and I'd say most studios nowadays still can't get it right. Just having Ito and Yamaoka ""around"" doesn't automatically give me confidence in the new SH2 remake.

Ito has been in many of the games post Team Silent and that didn't somehow make those games "good."

That’s why I was confused by his response, and it made me question him. I thought it was to show James’s sexual frustration, part of some of the selfish aspect of his darker character.

Either way, I’m sure that’s not gonna be in the remake.

It's definitely based on his sexual desires and aggression. It's entirely up to the player, but the discussion about what Pyramid Head looks like underneath always lead me to believe it's just James under there.

When you get to the Labyrinth, PH wanders the tunnels area and unless he's directly in from of James he resorts to a searching pattern. Which could be for emblematic of James looking for Mary.

Of all the 2nd gen games out there, it probably holds up the best visually being so old. The HD fan mod make it even better.
