Silent Hill

I don’t know why people even still buy these collections of old games. It’s so much easier to emulate, and free to boot. You don’t even need a halfway decent pc to emulate ps1 and ps2 games. Only ps3 is where it gets much more difficult. If someone doesn’t have a pc at all I understand, (although it’s good to just invest in one) but it seems some people just refuse to emulate because they think it’s too hard or “company loyalty” because people must consoom product.

PS1 is trivial, but PS2 is still a pain in the ass in a fair number of games. The Jak and Daxter games still don't render correctly last I checked and modern high-end CPUs still won't play the Sly Cooper games at full speed.

You're actually far better off emulating Sly Cooper and Metal Gear Solid in their PS3 port bundles than trying to emulate the PS2 games.

So with games that have problems with textures, I just press f7 or f9 or something, whatever it was. Can’t really remember. I haven’t played a game with pcsx2 that is unfixable. Then again, I do have a 3060. And also I don’t emulate much unless there’s a game I really wanna play, so I might not know.

Edit: actually fuck me yes there was. Silent hill origins. That game is terrible on a ps2 emulator.

I was browsing through a Steam group after reading about the whole Sweet Baby Inc thing, when I stumbled upon some information from a related thread about why you should avoid games from companies owned by Tencent. In case you don’t know, Tencent, based in China, is one of the largest worldwide tech and venture capital investment firms, and is steadily buying up stake in foreign video game companies. Issues with this include data mining, lack of competition due to monopolization, and proliferation of bad game mechanics, such as loot boxes. Included in this thread was a list of several of Tencent’s most recent acquisitions, and one of them in particular stood out to me:

I confirmed this, Tencent is a majority shareholder of Bloober as of October 2021, a full year before Silent Hill 2 Remake would be announced. I’m generally an optimistic person by nature, but aside from all of the criticism that the remake has received so far, I think this might be the thing that gives me the most pause as far as the remake goes. I don’t feel so good anymore guys

Ahh Bloopers horror always felt like it desperately wanted to be SH (and failed tastelessly) even before the buy out.

I last had hope for the series when I thought they had a chance of learning lessons after The Room wasn't so great, you can imagine my disappointment.

It doesn't help that James doesn't look or act like James in what we've seen so far. We'd parrot the bad voice lines from all the early games in our household, but looking back I couldn't have understood how integral that disjointed, unworldly interaction played into the surreal world. Even the physical acting was kept muted and awkward, which is a beautiful choice rather than a limitation, you see the same motion capture process in Clocktower 3 and they opt for overacting and physical drama instead and create a completely different flavour of game.

I don't think any developer that could afford the SH IP is ever going to be able to go as subtle, in terms of character design and scene directing, as the mood of the games require. You're not going to convince a table of people who've not played the game to move "backwards" away from 'what a modern audience demands' or some other bullshit. Remakes in this series are doomed from the start and I couldn't put any faith in a remaster since that fateful revoiced PC port.

The closest we're getting to Silent Hill from herein is going to be indie love letters to the series and, to their credit, there are a lot and some have been lovely little jems. I'll take that.

I can give credit to The Room for at least having some interesting ideas (the titular room is one of my favorite things in the series), crazy ass art direction for the nightmare worlds, a pretty out there story that still tied itself to the lore and just not being another Silent Hill 2 "I'm guilty of something and forgot what it was" plot.

I wasn't too hard on Origins initially because of the novelty of having a rather okay Silent Hill on a portable system even if the characterizations of Lisa and Kaufman was just dumb.

Homecomings logic falls a part immediately. "IM A TRAINED SOLDIER WITH MILITARY ABILITIES" doesn't make a lot of sense when what's his nuts was in an asylum the whole time, even if his daddy was a vet. The idea of a second cult wasn't the worst but when it goes Hostel at the end and you're killing miners from the movie I wrote it off. Doesn't help the gameplay feels unbalanced and janky, plus this is the first time Pyramid Head got pimped out like a battered whore.

After that it was just a big headed producer and friends circle jerk in full force.

I think from this era it was Shattered Memories I really did not like the most. It isn't Silent Hill 1. It isn't even a "reimagining" of Silent Hill 1 like they would keep saying. It has nothing to do with Silent Hill 1 or even SH in general.

Sure you got people named Harry and Dahlia, but they weren't the same character or even had anything in common other than Harry looking for his kid. Dahlia the cult leader? Now she's some burnt out goth slut with her tits named Sid and Nancy. Lisa is just there or something, had no real bearing on the plot other to just inexplicably start bleeding out like she did in the original but there was no reason to since she wasn't just some puppet for Alyssa anymore in this "reimagining."

Oh and Alyssa, the most important character and cause of the whole series, is just gone now.

Same with the locations. Superficially you kind of go to similar where. locations from SH1 in sort of the same order. But now instead of a creepy as fuck elementary school its some bland high school. The Balkan Church is now the Balkan nightclub. Hospital is just a lobby area.

Gameplay wise it's just a glorified game of tag with bland naked pink things. Its better at being a tech demo for some nice flashlight effects (I'll give the game credit for looking pretty fantastic on the wii of all things).

Shattered Memories was Tom Hulettes attempt to rewrite Silent Hill 1 and completely misses the point of Silent Hill in general. Makes sense since he and the Downpour director had stated they quite didn't understand the plot to SH1 iirc.

Having said all that, maybe if said title was its own thing and didn't have the SH name and what not I'd be nicer to it but the autistic fan in me loathed it and what it stood for.

Only thing worse would be the IDW comics which are so fucking unbearable and bad. Least Shattered Memories didn't have writing that felt like something an edgy 13 year old would write.

@TATE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODE!! The only good part of Shattered Memories is the joke/alien ending and mostly because it's making fun of James. Otherwise you are absolutely correct about it and I'd like to add that Harry looks like a weenie and has unnecessary glasses. And not to be pedantic, but it's spelled Alessa.

My potato does an ok job with PS2 emulation depending on the game. But yeah. There are rendering issues. I tried one of the Crash games. I think it was Wrath Of Cortex. Ran beautifully until I got to that part where you roll around the level. Everything got screwy. So if you have an actually good or even ok computer and it doesn't work right it's not a problem with your hardware specs.

I had no issue with the Phantasy Star remake and Atelier Iris was fine outside of some voice clips repeating and a few effects being slow. I have a lot of games I could rip. But I don't think Shattered Memories is gonna be one I can actually play. I better just get a PSP battery so my cord doesn't come out of the wall again. 😓

The first property to include Pyramid Head where he doesn't belong was that cuckold frenchman's movie I think. He didn't understand the series' core, and he probably just wanted to hijack the property to do some mid-2000s anti-Christian propagandizing. Then came Homecoming which was basically just applying the hollyjew brush to SH again, but in game form. So there were references to Saw and other horror media, Pyramid Head showed up again, they shoved in a token black stereotype cop (see dieversity hire nowadays), and references to the writing staff. God awful.

Homecoming was the nail in the coffin even back then, and all because of having Pyramid head where he doesn't belong. Not being able to comprehend the simple concept of PH being -->JAMES'<-- own personal tormentor showed me these (((western))) assholes didn't understand shit from the series. And especially after watching the excellent Twin Perfect reviews with footage from back in the day. Every lying chode with an IGN mic in their face was talking up and down about "respecting the series" and "it being their favorite thing ever". Such easy to see blatant lies these days. Never trust the establishment media kids, they're only trying to Shekel-you.

If a movie could wear skin like Buffalo Bill, the SH movie would be it.

On the surface it looks and sounds like Silent Hill but dig deep and it goes from a story essentially about devil worshippers to some dumb "BURN THE WITCH" anti-christian tripe.

It's worse sin is its fucking boooring.

Second movie at least is a so bad it's good syfy channel movie to drink to with friends.

The 2006 movie was ehh for me. It had a lot of potential, especially for a vidya movie, but it fell flat by the time the third act happened, and its ending was garbage. The sequel was dogshit, but yes it does come off as a so-bad-its-good movie at times

I thought the ending was a nice twist, for a movie that was not based on Silent Hill
Silent Hill 2 and 3 were so scary I no longer find any other horror games scary. This is the real horror now. 😢
Silent Hill 1 has held up too. It’s very claustrophobic. Team Silent did a great job working with the limitations of the PS1
