Silent Hill

Hello Silent Hill Friends!

I played the remake, (I pirated it) and for those who have seen my previous posts on this thread can probably guess what I am going to say about it, but what I think might surprise you. Here is my very quick "review".

The original is still better and everyone should play the original first, but I am honestly surprised (like most people) that is isn't terrible

Things I hate:
-Voice acting is worse, again, this is something they never could of remade, so it's an instant flop, especially when it comes to Mary's letter and some of the other more serious moments in the game. It's not like they aren't trying, its just something that's irreplaceable.
-I felt powerful beating the living shit out of monsters, I shouldn't be feeling this in a SH game.
-Like I predicted, the "dreaminess" and charm of the original is lost cos of all of "muh realistic grafix" (also the town actually looks really good, more on that later).
-Character models are ugly, not in some faggy "woke" way, but rather they just look disproportional and uncanny, and not in a positive way. I knew this was coming, Bloober Team has always had shitty character models (I'm talking about The Medium btw).
-Over the shoulder cam is shit, like we predicted.
-Game is unecessarly padded, i think it's like 2 times longer then the original??? Why????? New puzzles serve nothing but remind me that people out there played top dollar for this.
-No more Eddie's pizza, cringe and gay

Things that were good:
-The town looks really good. The other thing I know Bloober Team are good is that their worlds look great.
-Atmosphere is there pretty much 80% of the time and it's almost as good as the original, again, not dream like quality, but still good.
-They didn't pussy out of a lot of stuff. Surprising to say the least considering how tone deaf some of their other games are.
-There are alot of small details that are pretty cool, for example James nails grow longer as the game goes on. Better then nothing I suppose.

FINAL THOUGHTS
What Bloober did is the bear minimum, a ok remake. Which is pretty amazing considering all their history. What also really upsets me is the amount of blind dickriding online, people are absolutely delusional to claim there is no reason to play the original anymore.
And because of this remake, people interested in Silent Hill will only play the remake... and because of this games success, the other ones will be remade too. It's bleak knowing that the originals will be washed away to time.

So yes, surprise, someone who is autistically obsessed with the original, I don't think the remake is suitable replacement, and it says alot about the industry and the audience that will eat anything up with a recognizable name on it.

Character models are ugly, not in some faggy "woke" way
That is what i find as well. Ange should be trying to make herself ugly as a defense for her mind. But Maria is supposed to be the smoking hot James fantasy recreation of Mary. Yet she looks like she has cheeseburgers stuffed in her cheeks. On the face she looks fatter than Eddie. If you took head shots of them both the moon face is quite striking.

Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Downpour, all these games are also just soft remakes of SH2 anyway since the twist in each is that the protagonist killed someone and forgor.
I see everybody already memory-holed the worst atrocity, Book of Memories.

I just want Nightdive to work on 1-4 :(
4 is on GOG, cheap and ready to be played on modern systems.

So after finishing it, I just wanted to put my two cents in, even though I enjoyed it, it's still worse than the original and I think the best way to showcase my feelings is by comparing the letter Mary reads at the very end of the game.
Coincidently, I also got the In Water ending (owing mainly to the fact I did a very thorough run, meaning I picked up the note on the hospital roof, read the message in the bar after the Hospital, and listened to the audio tape right after James finds out what really happened), to the games credit, James' VA did a praise worthy job in the ending, James knows that this isn't what Mary would want but he just can't bring himself to live a life without her and the knowledge that he was the one to kill her, and he captured those thoughts in his performance, but holy shit did they really fuck up the letter reading.

The remake's letter is about a full minute and a half shorter than the original, the OG just barely missing the 5 minute mark with the new one inching across 3 and a half minutes due to a quicker reading in general and some lines being cut out, including the great “I can’t tell you to remember me, but I can’t bear for you to forget me.” line, the original was given the time to really engross the listener to really prepare them for those tearjerker final words, and the only reason I can think of for making it about a third quicker was because Bloober thought people would have ADHD and couldn't sit through a five minute monologue that caps off a 10ish hour game.

The lack of music in the original should also be noted, the only sound being Mary's voice means each change in her voice sticks out since there's no ambient track like in the remake to distract the player, it helps pull you in and invest you in what is being said, you could also make the argument that the lack of really anything visual going on in the original also helps serve this purpose

Finally, let's talk about the final lines spoken in the game (assuming you didn't get the Maria ending), the original "James...You made me happy." will hit like a fucking truck no matter what ending you get, you can hear the emotion coming out the original VA, her voice trembles heavily while reading the line that's paints a picture of Mary in tears as she was writing it down knowing that this would act as her final goodbye to her newly widowed husband. But in the remake Mary's voice is soft and lowers in pitch as the line is read, it sounds like they were aiming to make her seem reflective of all the good moments she spent with James but it lacks all that emotion that made the original so iconic. Those five minutes of buildup with no music or visuals all led up to those five words that ended things beautifully, and not only does the remake's delivery fall flat on its own, but it's also part of a rushed reading that caters to people who can't be asked to sit the fuck down and simply listen for a few minutes.

Adding music to the letter-reading really does speak to BT thinking that all their players have ADHD, a severe lacking in attention span. I said this previously, but the line-reading throughout the whole game just feels "impatient", the pauses in between certain lines aren't long enough, so it just feels awkward in delivery.
The new "You made me happy." even sounds vaguely threatening... what the fuck. It sounds like a sinister whisper, as opposed to teary-eyed, sorrow-filled delivery of the original.

I hate that they removed Maria shaking her head in disbelief and disappointment when James confuses her for Mary again at the otherworld hospital, as well as James recoiling in surprise when she snaps at him. Those were nice details in body language I really enjoyed.

Has Nightdive been doing that shit now. I thought they did a wonderful job with the shadowman remaster, actually adding cut content like bosses and levels (more specifically all of “the five” now have their own separate level and all need a retractor in each of the later asylum levels, rather than 3 of the 5 just being in the prison in Dallas)

Haven’t really finished silent hill 4 yet but hearing how there was cut content and it being unfinished I kinda hope nightdive is allowed to do work on at least 4.

My apologies if this has been posted before:

How is this exactly a positive? One of the most important creators from the original, Masahiro Ito, says that he didn't want to make it, it didn't need a remake, but still got involved to make sure they didn't fuck it up? They don't go as far as to say it in the article, but I can almost bet the producer sending Ito some gameplay footage and him being so horrified by what Bloober was doing, that he probably decided to jump back into the trenches to minimize the damage they were doing to his baby.

And probably have that faggot Spherehunter dress up as her for some Konami shill event too like they did with RE4.

That particular faggot publicly boycotted the remake of 2 for retarded reasons (attempting to be first in line on a hate train which derailed once the positive reviews began being published), then immediately appeared in the chats of other streamers playing the game. So either he's now on Konami's shit list, or will shill extra hard in the future while branding all noticing of the hypocrisy "transphobic."

So whats with all the dejavu moments of James interacting with stuff that was in the previous games? Is this just a neat thing put for people who played the OG or implying some kind of time-loop shit theory?

Though I haven't watched the full playthrough, yet, it appears to be a case of memberberry easter eggs having been cynically included for the sake of fueling such questions; and resulting in the terminally online feeling compelled to tweet and post about the remake from the position of having convinced themselves that the game is deeper than it is. At least, that's the most consistent quality of reaction I've been seeing, and seems in line with everything else pointing to it being niggercattle slop.
