I think you were wrong about RE4 remake. The normies still seem to like it a lot. In fact, even though it came out nearly two years ago, the RE4 remake currently has 4x the amount of people playing it on Steam than SH2. Which should tell you everything you need to know about the SH2 remake.
Though I'm not the person being quoted, I'm of the mind that these arguments will always be apples to oranges:
Capcom remade a game which had been successful for eight years straight (despite being a Gamecube exclusive initially hurting its sales until it was ported to Playstation to fulfill demand), remained successful through multiple ports, and had a remake announced with relatively upfront honesty about it being a cash grab. Whether critics consider it a "demake" or not (and I tend to agree with such criticism, despite enjoying the game), Capcom knew to preserve most of what had made the original successful in the first place. The remake was also entirely expected; given the commercial and critical success Capcom had found in remaking
2 and fast-tracking
3 purely so they could release
4.
With the
SH2 cash grab, it was apparent to any longtime fan of the franchise that Konami was feebly attempting to milk the only remaining good will the franchise had by contracting a Current Year remake of "the one people seem to like" out to a studio with a mediocre track record. From my perspective, it was DOA:
-See teaser trailer for
Silent Hill 2 remake, feel only schadenfreude disgust at Konami scrambling like a crackhead to generate money with the IPs they killed, following the failed
Metal Gear: Survive cash grab
-Bloober tells everyone to get hyped
-
Silent Hill: Ascension ends up being the undeniable pile of shit everyone expected, and everyone shits on Konami for having no idea what to do with the IP
-Bloober asks everyone to please get hyped
-
SH2 Remake announced PS5 exclusive and, despite seemingly being the target audience for the remake, I don't care enough to buy a PS5 to play something I expect will be shit
-
Silent Hill: The Short Message ends up being the undeniable pile of shit everyone expected, and everyone shits on Konami for having no idea what to do with the IP
-Bloober begs everyone to PLEASE get hyped, game release delayed six months
-Game releases alongside antagonistic marketing campaign somehow blaming fans of the game for the negative word-of-mouth, invokes nonsensical "This Game ISN'T. FOR. YOU." strategy for redditors to latch on to
-Game barely runs, only PC version is playable in first week following extensive modding
-Konami and Bloober fail to learn from competing
Resident Evil remakes; and make game three to four times the length of original through padding main sections out with endless combat, despite original not emphasizing combat
-Everyone stops talking about game within 30 days of release, Bloober cries when game doesn't win a single critical award
-Just waiting to see what
Silent Hill-branded piece of shit Konami releases next, with no intent to play it
It's no high praise for the
RE4 remake to note that, in competition with the
SH2 remake, "normies" are simply choosing to play the better game which is both fun to play and has replay value.
