Horror game youtuber and probable KF forum user Boulder Punch talked about the game:
tldw: F is for Frustrating. It has some good ideas but doesn't use them for the full extent. Combat can be fun but it clashes with the tone and is too repetitive with the game forces you into it. Story bogged down by needing to repeat the entire game for it.

It just feels bizarre SHf is a thing at all because this game just has so little to do with SH in every form that it becomes absolutely jarring to even call this a Silent Hill game on principle alone. Its not even a survival horror (tho, of course, shills will say that it is because good luck finding "gamers" these days that arent a constant reminder of the death of this hobby).

It just feels bizarre to have this discussion at all because any veteran would know that SH, even at its most "wacky", never had fucking devil trigger werewolf arms. Its a game that is really taking advantage of the fact this series had no major non-remake entries in several years that they are able to cash in on normies to get away with it.

Maybe Im just giving Konami too much credit tho, this whole thing was likely an extremely low risk endeavor on a project they likely didnt have much faith in and decided to insert some brand recognition (not that they'll ever admit it).

If you do like it as its own game, fine, but its important to make it clear this is your stand

SH f - Good game, awful SH game ( "A good game held down by its title")

And before you go off on me, know that I have a similar feel to this but with Resident Evil 5 and so does most of the fanbase, the game, by itself, is great but few would consider it a good RESIDENT EVIL game. Are we clear?

People shitting on F (its alright lol) while Downpour is right there, ready for the boots to put to it for eternity are baffling to me.

One's failure doesnt make the other's failure okay in comparison.

Homecoming and Downpour are still bad. The latter especially.

I think people project a bit of what happened with the SW prequels suddenly gaining a new found appreciation after the sequels. And while that can happen with other properties, I dont think it applies to SH.

F just reafirms anything post SH 4 (maybe post Origins to those that like it or post SH 3 to those that dont like 4) either isnt true SH or poor SH at that.

Story bogged down by needing to repeat the entire game for it.
Not that the story was any good to begin with. After this dumpster fire, all I can say about this Ryukishi guy is that either he's a talent-less hack or his writing chops were butchered by feminist consultants.

It doesn't even do a good job of pushing the message that it claims to. The story boils down to "men evil, marriage evil, having children evil" that it beats over your head repeatedly with all the subtlety of a wrecking ball and they then expect you to play through this trashheap more than once to get the whole story. I'm just gonna spoil shit because this story is so fucking stupid and dogshit that it's not even worth guarding. Let it be known that I'm a true and honest women and this game was made supposedly with me in mind. But I can assure you that this game and story makes me want to vomit and I hate the main character so much that I would've prefered that the true ending of the game consisted of her just dying in some fashion.

The context clues you get from NG+ only makes the main character out to be even more of an insufferable, piece of shit. Everything happening around her is just a result of her stupid, childish warped perception of reality where she believes marriage to be the most evil thing that can happen to a woman and that getting married and starting a family is no different than just killing yourself. In reality, she's having an over dramatic meltdown to a situation that isn't even that fucking serious and I don't feel sorry for her or relate to her at all. She's just an annoying, stuck up bitch that refuses to take responsibility for her shitty fucking behavior and would rather throw a massive fucking tantrum than use her mouth to talk about anything other than giving some self righteous speech about being a strong independent woman. This stupid fucking bitch doesn't care about literally anything except herself and what she wants in spite of everthing and everyone else around her.
Here's a list of why Hinako is a stupid, insufferable cunt and why her not being killed off was the worst sin this game has committed:
  • She talks about her dad being a piece of shit but never bothers to try to understand the root of his behavior which is that he was conned out of his savings when he was trying to pay for a LIFE SAVING SURGERY for her mother who has a brain tumor that's killing her. So he accepts a dowry from a wealthy suitor to marry her off to pay off all his debts and get his wife said life saving surgery. Neither of her parents are super happy about marrying her off but at least they managed to arrange a marriage with a wealthy man who will be able to take care of her and money will be a thing of the past for her. It's not like they are tossing her to some penniless ugly bastard.
  • She talks about her mom being some braindead slave that deserves to be oppressed and killed just because she doesn't stand up for herself, completely glossing over that her mom actually loves her dad and stays with him not because she's too scared to leave but because she LOVE HER HUSBAND, oh my God, the HORROR. She's also not happy about having to marry her daughter off but wanting to LIVE and be able to see your daughter grow up is apparently such a disgusting, abhorrent sin that you should die for.
  • Fox Mask is a handsome, heir to a wealthy family who is also forced to marry to fulfill the obligations of his station (meaning yes, he is also bound by societal norms that dictate how a man should be) and he chooses to marry Hinako because he legitimately loves her after she saved him from a fox attack when they were kids. He cares about her enough to where he wants to use some of his wealth to not only pay off her family's debts but to also pay for the surgery THAT WILL SAVE HER MOTHER'S LIFE.
  • Hinako equates her sister to a soulless corpse that looks miserable all the time when she has zero fucking context as to what her sister's marriage is actually like. She just ASSUMES that she is miserable and projects her disgust and hatred of marriage onto her. How dare her sister want to be a woman, fall in love with a man and be happy? She should spend her life taking care of Hinako because that all she exists for in this little bitch's mind.
  • Hinako likes to brag about how she and Shu are such good friends but the reality is that she treats him like her property and personal pharmacy, relentlessly friendzones him and then goes out of her way to sabotage him ever getting close to any other female other than her. The game portrays Shu like some abusive dickhead who uses drugs to control Hinako but the truth is that he's just an extremely great guy who wants to be there and support Hinako regardless of what her choice is and who just wants to help her by giving her medication to deal with her headaches. He hasn't got a clue that Hinako's become addicted to it and she keeps asking for more but can't bring himself to stop because he loves her and wants to honestly help her.
  • Like someone mentioned earlier, yes, Hinako is basically caught in a glorified anime love triangle where she has to choose whether to stay with her childhood friend and basically fuck her family over or marry the handsome rich guy that she also likes. The game's entire plotline and events revolve her not being able to choose one or the other so the devs decide to split her in two so she can have both! Oh, ahem, I'm sorry, I mean so that she can have the OPTION for both!
  • This bitch talks down on her two female friends behind their backs in her dairy and then has the gall to pretend like she actually cares about either of them. She makes backhanded comments about Rinko and how she wants to fit the mold of a girly girl and then snidely says that her girliness won't be enough to win Shu over while flaunting her close relationship with him right in her face. It's no wonder Rinko grows to despise the cunt and stops trying to hide it. Rinko actually likes Shu and wants to be with him, but this smug, unlikeable tomboy is playing around with his feelings, behaving tenderly with him one moment and then friendzoning him the next, not taking it seriously at all and going out of her way to sabotage any attempt to get close to him, acting like she's not interested in him and pretending to encourage the two of them to be together so that she can get pissy and jealous when Shu goes off with Rinko instead of staying with her. Hinako also treats her autistic friend Sakuko like garbage too, calling her a weasel for not paying her back some money she loaned her and being so assmad about it that she stops bothering with her and just completely abandons her as a friend, hence why Sakuko keeps calling her a traitor.

This main character is so unbelievably spoiled, bratty and unlikable and yet the game rewards her annoying behavior. At no point does she do any real instrospection about her situation or behavior, at no point is her relationship with the other characters expanded on, fleshed out and neatly concluded. At no point does she feel any guilt for her actions or think about anyone else besides her own immediate feelings and wants and when confronted by all the people she's wronged, her response is to scream like a hysteric bitch and deny everything, turning the blame on them instead and refusing to take accountabilty for her role in what's currently happening. We get nothing of substance, nothing even remotely satisfying. We don't even know if anything that happened was real or not. Are there actual Gods warring in the town? Did Hinako actually split herself in two? I dunno. No one knows. The end, I guess. Time to wait for next activist garbage to come out in this fanchise so all the usual shills and bug people can fellate the ever loving fuck out of it and call it game of the year, an "instant classic" and a "revival" of the franchise.

Goddamn.
Welp. I'm gonna go play Silent Hill 2 to wash the taste of this dog turd from my mouth.

After this dumpster fire, all I can say about this Ryukishi guy is that either he's a talent-less hack or his writing chops were butchered by feminist consultants.
Part of the problem is that Ryukishi’s stories are clearly meant to be contained to the anime/visual novel medium. He’s got writing chops but SHf is a terrible example because they took a guy who’s only ever written VNs and manga and put him in charge of a game that, while very Japanese, is not anime. The stupid-ass Devil Trigger fox arm is proof enough that he’s out of his depth. That’d be acceptable in one of his series’ wacky anime fights, not Silent Hill.

Also yeah Hinako’s not exactly a likable protagonist. As much as the game wants you to pity her, she comes off as more whiny than anything.

We don't even know if anything that happened was real or not. Are there actual Gods warring in the town? Did Hinako actually split herself in two?
As far as I can tell, almost all of the game takes place in Hinako’s head. The gods are apparently real and can commune with her because she was born special. The two versions of herself are also only in her head and represent her conflicted feelings on the marriage - fox arm one wants to go through with it because she actually feels something for Kotoyuki/Fox Mask, regular one doesn’t. And I guess we’re supposed to assume that Sakuko, Rinko and Shu are all actually alive. But yeah it’s overly confusing and makes for a shit Silent Hill, the amount of glazing calling it one of the best SH stories is insane.

That's exactly what I want after getting an unsatisfying ending: another unsatisfying ending! Boy, thanks Konami!
How about four unsatisfying endings? I'm sure one will hit right, maybe the zany UFO ending... Oh...

"But we did find an enemy to all women." Oops, guess not. Anyone who tries to say it doesn't want you to hate all men is wrong.

Yeah I know about this too, hence my conclusion that this game is just anti-male propaganda made to pander to all the single, tiktok wine broads seething about still being single at 30, getting jealous that all their female friends are getting married and living happy, fulfilled lives while they're marinating in cat piss. You know, the demographic that doesn't even play games.

Don't get me started on all the self hating, feckless, dickless, soylent males who crow on about how this game is a "masterpiece" of storytelling.

Just beat it on hard/lost in the fog. Very dissappointing. Its hard to say but theres just... no artistry in this game. The cutscenes are so flatly framed and bluntly written that its all so... BORING. And dont get me started on combat. The enemies are just mennequin, mannequin, mannequin in a school uniform, fat guy, fat guy, fat woman, blind nigga. Such excitement. Enemies all have tweening frames on their attacks and slide over to you so theres no point in tacticool thought or any of that gay shit survival horror is known for. Just mash dodge and fish for counters! Protip: just play on story difficulty. The inflated HP pools just make the game a slog and actually hurt the atmosphere in places. The sukakupaku fight was pretty cool at first but by the time I beat her I had all her frame data comitted to memory. Not conducive to a horror vibe. The puzzles also dont change much, and some get worse on higher difficulties.

Story was a let down. Whole thing is about Hinako wanting to choose her own life outside traditional marriage roles, but shes such a flat character you dont get a real idea what that even means. The only thing I know about the woman is that she used to run track in middle school. Shes a bland, lifeless character who is only important to the story because the other characters are all madly in love/hate with her.

Also, funny note: the whole game is being cause by Hinako tripping on red pills Shu gave her. Shu took them first tho and word for word says they aint shit. Hinako is going insane because shes a lightweight who cant handle her edibles.

Tl;dr the game is Callisto ProtocolxTwilight with anime furries

few would consider it a good RESIDENT EVIL game.
Something I find ironic is that most people who bash 5 the hardest praise 4 as the pinnacle of RE even though 4 laid the foundation for RE’s transformation from horror into action.

4’s a great game, not debating that. But its bemusing that THIS action title is perfect and trve RE but THIS one is pure damnation.

I find 5 servicable enough. It’s co-op is always fun.

You'd be right. I guess the difference, for me anyway, is that it at least try to keep the DNA of the original trilogy preserved somewhat. We dont see sunlight at any point (we start the game during daytime but its far from a bright day and nighttime soon arrives. We only see sunlight at the ending as expected) and the environments are very grimy, dirty and isolated, not mentioning that if you dont know what you are doing, you can get cornered and overwhelmed very quickly. And there are still moments on tension in the plot like the dogs in the maze, the bug enforcers in the sewers and the Regenerators need no introduction.

My point is that there was an effort in justifying the "Resident Evil" title despite the changes. While I wont say RE5 doesnt try at all (that honor goes to 6), most of the time there isnt any tension and the closest thing to fear the game makes you feel are those bug-men that can one hit you if they get to you. It tries to be unsettling ocassionally but that will always be diminished by the co-op element.

But as a game itself? Its very fun and very well designed.

I enjoyed Silent Hill f but I still think the original trilogy is the best.

My main complaint is similar to what I experienced with SH2Remake and 4.

I felt that I was ready to see the end area after finishing the Shimizu household. Instead of that, you go through not one, but three combat gauntlets that also involve backtracking through a good chunk of the game's maps.

I did like the Treasure Hall puzzle segment in between these gauntlets but I would have liked to go directly to that after the Shimizu house and then to the endgame boss area without also running through most of the shrine and the third timewasting gauntlet.

I had a similar problem with Silent Hill 2 Remake. What made the Labyrinth so effective in 2 was how tight it was. You were rapidly descending into hell and it kept getting more disturbing the deeper you went. It was a short but highly effective segment. In the remake, however, you're dicking around with too many mazes and a gauntlet section near the end which reduces tension.

Silent Hill 4's item and inventory management sucked because you couldn't drop anything and since I didn't know what to expect in the endgame area I wasn't sure what to keep and ended up having to go back and forth to the apartment to dump my inventory. This detracted from the tension I wanted to feel near the end.

I have other SHf gameplay complaints such as how the camera becomes retarded if you're stuck in close quarters with an enemy, but I was able to work around those problems most of the time.

As for the story, I really liked it and played through it enough to see all of the endings, but I think the dev underestimated the patience required to see all these new story details. People replay the Resident Evil games because they're short while Silent Hill f takes much more time to complete if you want to get enough faith to build your character. It also doesn't help that the dot that indicates pickups doesn't activate until you're relatively close (SH2 Remake also had this problem) so you're not clearing NG+ as fast as you can with RE games because you're hugging room edges.

I think SHf's biggest weakness is the otherworld. Not only is it kind of boring thematically, aesthetically, but the cutscenes and story segments that happen in it are really boring save for the big setpieces. I think the scenes involving walking around with fox man doing various rituals are the cutscenes I skip the most. The fog town scenes are usually interesting enough to rewatch when running around in a modded outfit or something.

ALL of this is purposefully by the writer for you to feel about Hinako, BTW, so your ranting is ironic.
lest we forget the most famous SH involves playing a repressed wife-murderer..
Hinako was never meant to be portrayed as "in the right", and the game hits you over the head with how wrong she is, so much so that Shadow Hinako torments and laughs in her face about how she strings Shu along and everything else.

its like your ranting about grasping exactly what the writer wants you to grasp about the character.. bizarre really.

I'd argue RE was barely ever true Horror, it was always body horror and pure action, you are straight up gunning down Hunters by the bushels with shotguns in the first game, all the games involve women loading up 30 different flavors of Grenade rounds to turn dogs into pools of acid, and they all end in over the top Rocket Launcher finales.. they are 80's Combat Horror, RE7 is more "horror" than the franchise ever was, and even still that one gets so grindhouse goofy by the mid point anyways.

Well, by that metric, SH1-SH4 were barely horror either. Harry Mason and crew had way better combat than any of the STARS crew. It takes way longer to stab a zombie to death than a lying figure, and it took till RE5 for them to unlock strafing. While James was beating pyramid head to death with his own buster sword, Claire was getting softlocked on a plane to antarctica because she ran out of ammo. The SH crew also had similiar body counts to the RE crew by the end.

this is pedantic as fuck, you know exactly what I mean, not the style of combat, but the context of the encounters.

No game where you have a gun battle with a Club=Claw Handed Super Soldat bioweapon made by a pair of Incest Twins, on the back of a Freight Plane with the back hatch completely open, where you EJECT him into the ocean with a Crate ejector is really a horror game, but an action-horror one.

it isn't the combat itself, or how easy it is control the characters or how easy it is to kill the characters, its what you are doing, how its doing, and how its presented, Nurses coming out of the pitch dark with giant twitching lumps on their back is horrifying and its presented as such.
90% of encounters in RE involves you blowing it away with guns no citizen could ever just have, set to music like

I don't know why this upset you so much, but I guess using my eyes is pedantry. You literally shoot a reality warping demon god to death in SH1. No one in the resident evil universe accomplishes anything close to that.

The horror in resident evil is horde horror. Its being surrounded by horrible monsters and counting down the time you have left by the ammo in your gun. That isn't "barely horror". Thats survival horror, pure and simple.

Silent hill is psychological horror. You're supoosed to feel sad about your daughter/wife/dad/neighbor/brother/son/dad again/fiancee. You aren't supposed to think about the fact you're tearing through swarms of anti-reality beings with weapons you picked up out of a gutter because thats not the point. But just because you aren't supposed to think about it doesn't mean you aren't still doing it. Slap promise reprise over E1M1, you'll still be a demon killing machine.
