What the hell is it with tumblr users picking the absolute worst characters to be like “I literally am him!!” with?

Young women found out about IHNMAIMS from Tiktok recently, and then it spread to Tumblr. In the radio drama he has a mental breakdown/goes on an emotionally vulnerable rant that they fell in love with. They can relate to his feelings of/struggles with being disconnected from his body and not having access to deeper connections and human intimacy (or Asexual representation OMG!). Also his hatred and disgust for humanity resonates with them, though perhaps for different reasons. He's often either a self-insert, a troubled sexyman that they want to fix/make worse, or both.

Interactions between the five humans vary from wholesome found-family tropes to like- completely ignoring the existence of the other humans to ship Ted with AM because he's an unstable skinny white man with BPD. Also a lot of them saw young impassioned Harlan Ellison and fell in love with him, and they sometimes base their human!AM headcanon on his appearance in the mid 70s/early 80s, before he hit the wall at 200mph. About Nimdok, most of the fans prefer to ignore him completely. Besides the Nazism (which is bad enough because it's uncomfy(!) and scary to engage with(!) he's not very blorbo-fiable because he's an ugly old man with a silly voice. They totally overlook AM using and encouraging Nimdok's nazi research to keep the five humans alive because they don't like to think about it.

Yep. Leave it to the Tumblr/Twitter types to ruin what made the game, its messaging and its character AM so hard hitting. I hate these people ruining classic games and molding them into their stupid queer yaoi fanfics. I'm sick of the stupid trans headcanons, I'm sick of the actual game being ignored because most people don't even play the game and are just too busy frothing over a man who's done with humanity and wants to ruin it and prolong that ruining for as long as he possibly can.

I'm so sick of leftists generally ruining these 90s/2000s games and SJWing them to the extremes. This is gentrification at its ugliest—the few or even many people appreciating something great, only for it to get flooded with these godforsaken people to the point where the original enjoyers get smashed out of the community because they didn't agree to the people's sudden quota of AM saying "trans rights!" or "eat the rich!' or something. If AM knew you personally, he would not like you.

He would use you for torture and will continue it regardless if you're dead from his experiments or not. Unfortunately, these people would be into that. Thoughtful messaging and gameplay has no real merit nowadays. It's either "omg so relatable smash capitalism" sort of interpretations with messaging or just terrible characters not being taken serious in the slightest and being turned into dolls for these people to fawn over.

It sucks I had to whine like this but when media you really respect get taken over by these people repeat so many times over the years, you can't help but feel a bit upset and MATI at times. It's unfair, man. Bring back the actual enjoyers of these old games, not these sort of fujo-fawning misrepresent-ers.

Ugh, yes, that one. God, AM being all expressionable and Tumblrified ruins his character so much that I can't even fathom it. They have to add sparkly expressions because they can't bother to be creative and learn to add emotion without the need of throwing it glitter.

It reminds me of that one Regretevator post on Tumblr when I was trying to gather some more SJW art where someone was complaining about people overstylizing Poob with a billion accessories and pride flags when his simplicity should be enough. I then looked at other characters such as Mannequin Mark, Gradient, etc, and I can really see what these people mean. It also reminds me of that whole "12 year olds when they see a character with a bald head" meme where people think adding fur or tufts or hair onto someone will "give them pizzazz".

Sucks you can't criticize any of that without the usual "you just hate fun/being whimsical/it aint hurting anyone" comments from those people. Sorry if people care about character preservation rather than dolling them up as furry/Tumblr-approved creatures. Sometimes a design is meant to be dull and boring and they can be "pizzazzed" without y'all Tumblrifying them. But hey, don't question, just consume or let these people foster.
